Pokemon GO Sets Century Stock Record

pokemon-go.jpg

The wildly popular mobile phenomenon Pokemon GO has set a new record for Nintendo, and it's a game it (technically speaking) didn't even make!

According to Bloomberg, Nintendo traded 476 billion yen ($4.5 billion) worth of shares on Friday, the biggest daily turnover for any company in the Topix index this century, effectively making history in the Tokyo stock market. The video game company giant surged 71 percent last week after the game became an instant hit, its largest weekly gain ever.

It seems like the hype for the game is reaping its fruits and it still has to get an official international release!

This could be like the Wii all over again where Nintendo instead of catering to gamers they focus their development towards the casual and whatever is the next hottest thing. Before you know it, it will be another Wii U situation again.

Maybe I'm exaggerating but I don't like the attention and focus this is getting. It's also sad this is getting more excitement than am actual real installment to the franchise (Pokemon Sun/Moon)

The app is full of problems but I still think the "this game sucks!!11" bandwagon is retarded.
I honestly think it was simply released too early. Still, other than the bugs, going out to catch first gen and hatching eggs is addictive alone. I'm too low leveled to actually capture gyms. Though when I saw a gym I thought I could grab, I immediately left a party to go after it, though I failed miserably. #Priorities

Feature-wise, it had a great start to get casual and more simpler players a good kick. From now, they'll have to add features. People are already looking forward to trading. I'd like to see them change the battle system. Add two more attacks, mostly menu selection like the old game, but keep the swipe dodging. It'll be a bit more complex, but you need to be fast.

Traditional trainer battles outside gyms is a must at some point.

Or add mic support so you can yell "pikachu dodge it" and this be like living in the anime and we need more female customization ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )

And people are still saying that "mobile gaming will never take over handheld consoles" - it will, and you'll love it. Handheld consoles are going to die, just like MP3 players and PDA's have - get comfortable with that thought. Pokemon Go is possibly Nintendo's most popular product in terms of social involvement since the NES and it's barely a video game. Mobile devices introduce 4G, BT and GPS technology into your games and that's great, this is the best incentive for Nintendo to release a branded "phonesole" and proper video games for mobile.

lol pkmn go is so insanely over-hyped even though this game is actually very bad ...
Very bad by PC/console standards. Very good by mobile standards. It really has nothing to do with being over-hyped, either, people play it because it takes them new places and lets them meet new people who are also gamers.

Foxi's back with his handheld-apocalypse, yet again :P
But seriously though, I'm not sure anyone expected the hype for this game to escalate so much. Also being released in only certain regions might have added to the effect since people started talking about it online and others had to get it by hook or by crook, this being especially easy on Androids.

Nonetheless, I'm sure Nintendo is seeing the potential here and if it dedicated its console team to mobile apps/games, then we'd be even more amazed. A "phonesole" might work, just that it shouldn't go the Xperia Play way, but offer truly exclusive content that requires that and only that "phonesole" for the experience.

I tried pokemon go, and after 5 minutes of playing, it was off my phone
You literally just walk around, tap a pokemon and throw balls at it
I might have just played it too little, and the game turns a lot better later, but it didn't make a very good first impression

imo, this game's popularity is proof that humanity is going downhill

Pokemon Go barely, if at all, classifies as a video game - it's more akin to a part-time job. There's no objective, no stakes and the only semblance of gameplay takes place in gym battles. To call something a "game" it needs to have three things - winning conditions, losing conditions and a rules set. Pokemon Go has none of those, thus it doesn't fit the definition, which is worrisome. I don't like the trend of extending the definition of the word "game" to things that are not games - if you can't win or lose, it's not a video game - it's something else that we need a name for. I guess "geocaching app" is suitable. It's a "game" in the same sense that stamp collecting is - not at all. It is entertaining though, however glitchy.

Well the objective is to collect all pokemon. It's a collection thing. You can also battle at Gyms so you can win or lose?

Let's not forget that this game was not the idea of people who are in charge of Nintendo.
They are too busy being the only ones who still use Miitomo.
And it really shows how out of touch Nintendo executives are.

That's why I'm so baffled that the game was being build around this stupid endless grind of you level up and finding more powerful Pokemon instead of capping things off and build in a competetive mode With a battle system that makes sense. What's the point of powering up pokemon if you find a stronger ones later anyway. What's the point of taking a gym if you get no significant reward. At least the covenents in Dark souls had some role playing aspects to the game's multiplayer, here you literally just choose a color.
It would be so much cooler if there was a team rocket type team that you can join and you steal Pokemon after defeating other trainers (or ingame money, what ever). Or a Police type team that gets alerts about battles with team rocket grunts and get extra rewards for helping those players out. That would be one hell of a reason for someone to start sprinting. Online leader boards, tournaments etc. would give you one hell of a reason to be collecting and powering up all those Pokemon. Sure turf wars are cool but the whole game shouldn't be based around it.
Also only having gen 1 makes this game boring very quickly.
I mean I don't hate the game or anything. If forces people to go outside *gasp* at meet other people (!!!) It really shows how lazy and unsocial people are nowadays.

They can have Pokemon Go, I'll be busy spending months of my life using the Hyper Training feature in Sun/Moon.
Yeah man! Fuck IV breeding!unless Hyper training sucks then never mind...

The amount of attention probably has to do with the fact that more people, and more older people especially, have smart phones compared to 3ds'. It's an excuse for people who left playing Pokemon in elementary school to return a bit to that experience. Which is also what I think is the reason they're getting away with only having gen 1 pokémons atm.

I completely agree that it's very simple, but I remember reading that the creator of Pokémon actually took his inspiration from his days as a kid collecting butterflies. :P

But then, he also said that one of his goals was to have people experience the fun of trading butterflies between each other. Niantic didn't respect that much.. yet..
