How on earth does it run in 3DS mode? I thought hardware changes were needed, not just a CFW. Does it play 3DS games off of it?
Yes, that's what 3DS mode means.
The original DSTWO doesn't play 3DS games, the DSTWO+ was made for it though. They started out cloning Gateway which resulted in quite a few bricks. They finally made their own implementation based on "stolen" ReiNAND code, which so far is buggy but could turn out to be really good, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Could anybody confirm that any flashcard works fine with Luma3DS and firmware 11.x? :) So let's check what flashcard I'll buy, what do you think is better: DSTwo Plus, R4i rts or Gateway? Hm.. Just need it for DS stuff because I already have a Sky3ds+ in case I need a flashcard for 3ds games.
I'm using R4i rts and can confirm it works on every firmware I've tried it on, and works great. Currently I have the latest FW (11.0.0-33) on A9LH. I was always under the impression that R4i rts is firmware independent because it emulates a legitimate DS game, so you shouldn't have to worry about it imo.

Only because Nintendo gave up on blocking DS flash carts, the DS wasn't making them anymore money. So somewhere in the 7.x firmware, they stopped blocking the cards.

Just thought I'd mention: There is a difference between "Custom Firmware 11.x" and "Official Firmware 11.x". You cannot boot Luma on OFW 11.0, and must downgrade to 9.2. If you do manage to get on 9.2, you can set up an EmuNand (or more preferably A9LH), where you will then be allowed to update your system to latest firm while keeping your hacks enabled.
Thanks for the information. I am currently using Luma3DS with A9LH, CFW 11.x on SysNAND. So this is a CFW and not an official firmware. I can still flush my 9.2 NAND backup to my 3DS as I understand, yes? This should be right?!

But now I know that I don't need to downgrade anything because DS flashcards are working fine on the newest firmware.

Yes, however that is not necessary: You should just find a copy of "DSWhiteList.cia" (you can find it on that iso site) and install it to your sysnand using FBI. That should fix your DS Flashcart issue.
