Xbox One VR category seen on official E3 website

E3-logo.jpg

Several companies have a new category listed on their E3 website pages. This category is shown as "Virtual Reality > Xbox One", effectively confirming the possibility of Xbox VR products being shown at E3. So far, 4 companies have added this category to their pages, including Rebellion, Maximum Games, 3DRudder, and Readily Information Company. Between this and all the recent rumors, it would be very surprising if some kind of VR headset or software for the Xbox One was not shown at E3.

The sudden popularity of VR will be its downfall. Even if it isn't a gimmick like motion controls (I think it is), the sheer number of different solutions will bury it for sure. How many are there now? PS VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Microsoft HoloLens (then again, that's AR), Google Cardboard (or was it discontinued for good?), a bunch of iOS and Android ones - there's too many cooks in this kitchen.

I wonder if Microsoft will use the oculus vr headset with the Xbox and make exclusive Xbox vr titles or make their own headset. They might even be developing games for hololens.

I guess that would be interesting but its still $100 more than psvr and considering the lower adaption rate of xbox one it doesnt seem smart.

There's a bunch of different smartphones and they are doing just fine.
Objection!
Smartphones are mostly cross-compatible, due to most using either Android or iOS as their operating system. On an even more general aspect all phones are compatible period due to using the compatible cellular technologies and protocols and what not.
Different forms of VR on different platforms with different standards, however, are a different playfield.

Google Cardboard is my favorite by far. You can buy any type of headset from cardboard to titanium.

Agreed. It'll come down to how cross-compatible the different tech is. Good software will drive this tech, and if it's easy to develop for one and release for all, that'll be a boon for the tech. If they're vastly different methods and you can't port easy, it'll die.

Personally, I'm hoping it'll live and thrive. I want my ultra-porn, dangit!

The adaption rate might be lower than PS4 but it's still a good seller: figures aren't being released but it's definitely over 20 million units sold (probably less than 25 million): half what the PS4 has sold perhaps, but still outperforming both what the PS3 and 360 did in the same period - Xbox One is far from a failure: it just looks it next to the unprecedented monster seller that is the PS4.

Still, Oculus Rift support (in whatever form it takes) on Xbox is a strange idea to me... anybody who's gonna shell out that much for Oculus in the first place will have a powerful enough PC rig to run it: I can't see why this kind of user would be interested in a console! Unless MS are planning to do a bundle of Oculus Rift + [Upgraded] Xbox One, and price it similar to an inevitable PS4/Neo + VR combo...

I'm still not sold on VR anyway! It's kind of detached isn't it: I'm still not keen on online gaming as multiplayer to me = you and 3 mates in a room with booze & Pringles....but as an older gamer perhaps it just isn't for me.

I think vr is a fad personally. And I also agree with @Foxi4 saying that the vr market is oversaturated. There's at least five major headsets, and I've heard rumors of more companies making their own headsets. Only time will tell whether virtual reality will tank like it did with the virtual boy in the 90's.

I can't see MS bundling an OR, I would have thought they would go with their own hardware (Hololens)...

As for Multiplayer/online I'm with you on that.... I'm also an older gamer (think pinball back in the 60's, which was quickly forgotten when I first saw pong in the 70's...) I love multiplayer with a few mates & smoke & beer... I struggle with online mutliplayer, and only usually play joint campaign stuff.

As for whether VR will be succesful, who knows?, it was a gimmick when W Industries tried it in the late 80's & early 90's.

http://www.arcade-history.com/?n=dactyl-nightmare&page=detail&id=12493

I got to play a fair bit, testing their games as my wife worked a stint for them after Uni.... It was fun, but just in that arcade sort of experience, where you can only really play for 20 mins or so...

I would however consider the Hololens if MS brought one out for the Xbox, I like the skype app thing that they have in the works.. A lot of family live abroad, and I could see myself having a chat with my brother who lives a few thousand miles away... It would blow away what we have now...

What will bury it is the high price point. If the high price point eventually goes away then it will eventually be popular. Otherwise, it never will be.

Vive Oculus and PS VR are competing with each other. Those are the game platforms.
Google Cardboard isn't competing with anybody, and it's not very good, Samsung VR is the same. Hololens isn't competing with anyone either. All of these are primarily non-game platforms.

They're not platforms, they're displays. Glorified monitors with a couple of lenses and sensors to boot. They're just accessories. VR tech will never be adopted if it's not standardized - there's no common protocol, no consistency, just a bunch of different headsets that do the exact same thing. There's hundreds of different monitor makes, but they all follow one standard, so they compete on an even playing field and the customers know that whichever monitor they pick, it'll work with the common interface and all the software, so they can pick one on the merits of the hardware and build quality without worrying about compatibility. This is not the case with VR - there is no consistency and everyone is doing their own thing, which has the potential to kill the whole thing. All of the big VR names should band together into a consortium and code a common interface, otherwise programming for all those different headsets is going to be a nightmare and buying VR games will be a confusing mess. We already know Oculus will be opening their own store for software - that's what we need, more crap to install on top of Steam and Origin. The high price is temporary, this mess is not.

Hold it! What about different computers then?

Plus, there's like 5 or 6 PC VR. Not much. Mobile VR use those very same phone that almost everyone has.

I hope VR is successful because it is cool and I'm tired of people calling things a gimmick, just because it doesn't fit in a box and trying to progress technology.

Marketing VR as giant personal monitors may help it be successful.

The entirety of the PC business including Mac's are IBM-compatible for a reason. There are hundreds of thousands of different peripherals, but they all use common interfaces - GPU'd are designed for OpenGL and DirectX while "exotic" solutions like "S3 Metal" die off. There are thousands of different Android phones, but they're all Android phones built on the same framework. The same applies to iOS. There's no reason why VR should be an exception - it should follow a common standard.

You know, I say the same thing about operating systems but muthafuckas keep making them. I'm sure VR will be fine.

True to an extent, but really there's only two - Unix-like systems (umbrella term for Mac OSX, iOS, BSD and all flavours of Linux) and Windows - stuff like OS/2 has long been deprecated, even the Amiga OS is, for all intents and purposes, dead. VR will do well in the sense that it'll make money, but it won't be widely adopted if everyone uses their own standard. With accessories like this you have to go the Spaghetti Factory route and the best thing Microsoft could do right now is to create a universal VR framework, integrate it into Windows under the DirectX brand (DirectVR, anyone?) and create a standard that third-parties could adhere to.

Exactly my point as well. Either one VR is going to become/set the standard, or it's going to die.
