1. I hear that there are custom firmwares and hacking methods that do not use flashcards at all. Do these methods allow you to play backups, or are they only good for homebrews? Homebrew and backups
2. If these methods allow you to play backups, is there any difference in compatibility? I mean why would people even buy flashcards otherwise? To be able to go online without installing bad tickets, and/or to not reach your home menu limit. Aside from that, since the softmods were released, people do not tend to buy flashcards.
3. Is there any advantage of using a flashcard over applying a non-flashcard hack? Some believe that not having to modify your system (whether soft or not) is advantage enough. Some will say otherwise.
4. I believe that the hacks are available for certain official firmwares only (Below 9.0 or 9.2.0 or something). Is 2DS NWSMB2 edition hackable? You didn't mention your system version, so how would I be able to answer that? Definitely yes with a hardmod, no idea about softmods until you give us more info.
5. Is there any significant drawback of using a 2ds compared to a 3ds (your personal opinion, battery, shape, lack of pro pad support, etc...) In my opinion, the drawbacks are: small, shape, battery. Pro pad support only matters in a few games (Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Majora's Mask, etc). I just don't like the 2DS.
6. If a non-flashcard hack is possible. Do I need any other hardware to perform the steps? How large are the backups? Should I get a new sd card with more Again, you failed to let me know your system version. I refer you to the definitive (new)2/3DS/XL guide by Plailect: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki

Depending on your system software version, you may need an additional game to hack it (such as Cubic Ninja, OoT with save dongle, Smash Bros, etc), or you may need to hardmod your system to do a successful NAND dump and then inject an older native firm. It is all outlined in Plailect's guide.

A9LH + Luma3DS + LumaUpdater is the best way to go.

Hi everyone. I am going to buy a 3ds xl in a week and I have some questions. First I am totally a noob with 3ds cfw, flashcards or anything about it. I was planning to buy a sky3ds but as I can see here I don't need sky3ds to play 3ds games, am I right? And also I want to play online games like super smash brothers and mario kart 7, Is it possible with using cfw?

Yes. Just do not sign in with your NNID.

Yes you can play 3DS games (backups) using a CFW without a flashcard. You can also go online with these games with a CFW. The easiest way is to install the games as a CIA. This way, you can go online without worrying about gaining/purchasing a private header.

I refer you to Plailect's guide for answers. It will answer your question "is my 3dsxl hackable?" and it will let you know what you need to hack it, if anything.

I do not know what system software version comes pre-installed these days on new systems. It also depends on if you get new or old stock. If you are buying it pre-owned, be sure to check the system version before purchasing. Or ensure that there is a return/swap policy.

It helps if I actually provide you with the link to Plailect's guide: https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki

i am on step 24 of part 3 of plailect's guide. https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/Part-3-(RedNAND)

So, I did some parts of part 1 (homebrew) again. I used browserhax and got into the homebrew launcher. I opened menuhax, configured (d pad down), and it was successful (at least that's what it told me). So I pressed start to reboot, then ended up in the home menu. I turned off the system, then turned it on while holding down the d pad. But it didn't launch into the homebrew launcher, it launched normally to the home menu. Help ;-;

ALSO: i changed the theme and changed it back BEFORE using browserhax. didn't touch that thing afterwards.

Thanks for the answer, so I don't have to pay $90 usd for sky3ds flashcard to play 3ds games and online? That would be awesome

2. I'm sorry, what are bad tickets and what sort of home menu limit are we talking about? Is it a limit on the number of games that you can have on your memory?
4. I was hoping that you would give me some info on the version of firmware by looking at the release date or something. I do not own a 2ds, I am just consdering getting one.
5. AFAIK, b attery life is the same as a regular 3ds.

By the way, thanks for answering my questions.

My one big question is aactually this: If I a only interested in playing 3ds backups (I mean all the ones that are available and not a just a small chunk), is it possible to do that with a NWSMB2 edition (I checked it, firmware is supposed to be 7.1) and a non-flashcard hack?

And the other big question is: Is the hacking process complicated? I softmodded a PSP, is this much more complicated than that? Do I need extensive knowledge on the subject or would following the guides be enough?

No, you do not.

What is the exact file size of your NAND backup? Does it match one of the ones on this page https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/NAND-Size ?

2. I'm sorry, what are bad tickets and what sort of home menu limit are we talking about? Is it a limit on the number of games that you can have on your memory? Installing pirated copies of games installs a bad ticket onto your 3DS. I do not know 100% if this is the case with retail games vs eshop games. A bad ticket means you cannot later on purchase this game through the eShop, legitimately. Unless said bad ticket is removed, I would gather. I believe the home menu limit is only for what is currently on the home menu, and not what you have installed in the past. Just what you have currently installed. This limit is 300. Quite arbitrary, yes.
4. I was hoping that you would give me some info on the version of firmware by looking at the release date or something. I do not own a 2ds, I am just consdering getting one. Unfortunately I do not know. There is no true way to tell by looking at the serial number. The build date is not on the outside of the box, to my knowledge. Safe to say, if it has been sitting at the store for a while, it's not the latest. I would be astonished if you found one on the current version 11, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was on 10.x firmware. Perhaps someone else may better answer this one.
5. AFAIK, b attery life is the same as a regular 3ds. And for me, that is not sufficient. The XL battery life is longer?

By the way, thanks for answering my questions. Thanks for being appreciative! Usually, I'm a dick. ^_^

My one big question is aactually this: If I a only interested in playing 3ds backups (I mean all the ones that are available and not a just a small chunk), is it possible to do that with a NWSMB2 edition (I checked it, firmware is supposed to be 7.1) and a non-flashcard hack? If the firmware is on 7.1, it will have to be upgraded to 9.2 (https://github.com/Plailect/Guide/wiki/9.2.0-Update). You do not need any other games or anything to A9LH the device. As long as you follow Plailect's guide.

And the other big question is: Is the hacking process complicated? I softmodded a PSP, is this much more complicated than that? Do I need extensive knowledge on the subject or would following the guides be enough? Can you follow instructions? To the letter? Then no, it is not complicated. If you run into issues, most are listed on Plailect's guide. If you are panicking and do not know what to do, just take a deep breath, calm down, and post in this thread, or Plailect's guide thread. Someone will help you.

Load up your 3DS into sysnand. Use browserhax to go into the homebrew channel. Open up menuhax. Go to install. Once that is done, do not worry about configuring it again. Exit. Restart the system and hold down d-pad. Did it work this time?

Noob question. Following the excellent guide on arm9loader hax. Got to what is almost the end.

Section IV - Copying RedNAND data to SysNAND
  1. Reboot, then open Hourglass9 from arm9loaderhax by holding Start on boot
  2. Go to "SysNAND Options"
  3. Go to "SysNAND Backup/Restore..."
  4. Select "NAND Restore (keep a9lh)"
  5. Confirm and restore from emuNAND_original.bin
I've used all the linked software on the guide, but when I reboot holding start it loads hourglass9 v1.00 I have no Sysnand options, just Backup/restore. And when I click on that no NAND Restore (keep a9lh). I don't want to restore my emunand without the a9lh, Where have I gone wrong?

EDIT: also the next step is removing the emunand by taking everything off, formatting the sd and putting everything back on. Is there a reason to not use Ease US Partition Master to not just remove the emunand?

Hourglass9 is basically the noob-friendly version of Decrypt9, it always keeps a9lh. i guess Plailect updated the guide, but forgot to omit that part. Just do a NAND Restore with Hourglass9.

Ahh, worked like a charm. Thank you

As for the removing the emunand, wouldn't removing the partition via easeus be ok rather than following the guide which involves copying your sd card to computer, formatting and then moving it all back? I ask as my laptop is running out of space, and it's a 64GB card.

No, that's actually not a good method of doing it. Because it doesn't fully remove the emuNAND partition, and can lead to issues down the road. I wouldn't use it, I know it's highly cited, but just don't. Use EmuNAND9 to format your SD Card properly. If you can't backup your SD card, then I guess just keep the emuNAND on your SD Card, and once you can settle the space issue on your Laptop, then go ahead and properly remove it.

Well, the backup everything and completely format it part is due to the wierd wa,y, emunandpartitions need to be treated, and that is not as a partition at all. Emunand is just written into 1GB of unallocated space on your SD. Most partitioningprograms and formatters cant handle this.
And afaik you cant just expand Sd-Partitions...
Your best bet would be to just back it up to a external harddrive or something
Also people keep talking about using 3ds tools for the formatting, sounds like a stupid hassle if it is just cleaned afterwards anyways. You can easily do all that with cmd and diskpart in windows

  1. I want to install a CFW. Can I play online games with RedNand? I have a lot of cartridges and a Sky3DS with Private Firmware.
  2. Can I access eshop and miiverse with CFW?
  3. Can I uninstall CFW and RedNand and back my 3DS to original state (boot without SD card and etc?)
Thanks
