The wiki still needs more contribution.
Since there are too many frankenfirmware solutions & Factory >9.2 problems not documented.

I know I might be late but as might as well throw my 2 cents here.
Your N3DS will probabily come with a FW between 9.9-10.3 which are all FW's hackable and supported by browserhax, so you don't need to hardmod or buy games

FE Fates LE 3DS latest bundle released is known to have 10.5 which is still hackable, so you have nothing to worry about. However, if you are thinking of buying a used 3DS, I would suggest you check their firmware in case it was updated to the latest firmware, which cannot be downgraded without a hardmod

Mine had 10.3

My Hyrule Edition came with 9.9! So all I need to do is install browserhax and it'll be good to go. Do I need to do that date trick though? The one where you set it back to January 2000?

Depends on how long they've been sitting on the shelf. My store actually has several New 3DS's that have been in the store since launch. Why? Because we have a Game Stop and a Local Game Store that both got plenty of them in and people went to those stores instead of Wal*Mart.

Try it without the date trick. if that doesn't work, you have my permission to use the date trick, ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Okay, will do! And since it's brand new and has had nothing installed on it, do I need to do a system format? Everyone says it's recommended to avoid a soft brick.

I grabbed a N3DS (AC:HHD Edition available in the States) just yesterday and it came with 9.8. \_(ツ)_/
Must have been sitting in the store for a while, hm?

Seeing as more people are purchasing XLs, there might be a variety of sys setting versions, but I doubt you're going to need a game such as Oot3D to hack when most people have seen at the max 10.3 so far. The blue LE Monster Hunter Generations will probably ship with 10.6 if the firmware doesn't reach 12 by July :rofl2:

Edit: I'm assuming you're in the States, otherwise this post is mostly confusing or incorrect

If you're really absurdly lucky, you might get one with a good 9.0 - 9.2 firmware on it. I got a N3DS back in January, well after the Christmas and Boxing Week rushes, and still managed to score a 9.0 N3DS that I thought I was going to have to downgrade.

However, it wasn't a bundle. It was just the N3DS itself. Granted I didn't need a bundle as I have two other 3DS handhelds lol and I have a bunch of games for them.

I bought a n3ds just last night, and the firmware on it was 10.7. I doubt you'll run into any consoles running 11.0 in stores at the moment.
