Because when it gonna be release the 3DS gonna be 6 or 7 years old, so, that's how it goes ^^.
Yeah but the Gameboy line (not including the Advance series) was 12 years before the release of the Advance series. The 3DS series came out when the Advance series was 10 years old. According to that model, it is too early for the 3DS series retirement.

uh No! the gameboy color was sold and marketed as a new generation system. The original series of gameboy was 9 years old when the gameboy color series launched. the gameboy advanced series then launched a short 3 years later. Then the Nintendo DS series launched 3 years after that. the Nintendo 3ds series then launched about 7 years later. So there is no real pattern for Nintendo handheld system launches. any where from 3 years to 10 years Nintendo could launch a new. If Nintendo launched the next portalable system this fall or winter, it will still be just short of 6 years since the 2011 launch of the 3ds.

It's about time that Nintendo steps away from the 3DS, that thing is comparable to PSP which isn't too bad but by now they should be using a much better handheld with better visuals and higher resolution. YouTube on 3DS has really awful picture quality for some reason.

Technichally GB, GBC, and GBA could all be considered a part of the Gameboy line, the 3DS could be considered part of the DS line, but who really knows what they plan on doing. We now have a different president of Nintendo. The NX could change things. I am on the fence on this one, really.

They aren't canonically? I always assumed it was a continuation from the previous because they have almost the same names.

Game Boy
Game Boy Color
Game Boy Advance

So that's what makes it belong to the same line and just like you said, 3DS to DS.

Erm...did any of you repliers even bothered to check the source? This is a Japanese trading news source. To me, it's very likely that they just speculate that nintendo will release a new handheld somewhere in the future (which, let's be honest, is a pretty safe bet).

At this point late in its lifetime it's not wrong to assume that Nintendo's working on a new handheld, plus, with the Wii U going out next year (make space for the NX) it's all coming together. 3DS will definitely last a while longer than Wii U because it's a successful handheld and Ninty wouldn't want to upset them.

that always made me laught, we ALL know that nintendo start working on next console before the new is even released, they always told us when they started working on project Doplphin, Revolution, Cafe, it was always juste before the previous console was released, so yeah "NINTENDO IS WORKING ON A NEW HANDLED !" Yeah, flash news for you guys, they're working on it since 2010-2011 x).

Iirc, they didn't denied the controller rumor and it turned out to be fake, but they denied this and it is weird they just didn't say handheld.
Still could be nothing, but still.

Read "Mobile Handheld" thrown around too. As in, Nintendo Phone.

Exactly. Which sort of invalidates all sources as being news aside from nintendo themselves.

And let's not start about the dozens of people going "but nintendo didn't deny this rumour within 10 milliseconds SO THEREFORE IT IS CONFIRMED!!!!".
