The Legend of Zelda and Sonic The Hedgehog Inducted Into the World Video Game Hall of Fame

wide group white-sm.jpg

For the second year running, selection for the 2016 inductees for the World Video Game Hall of Fame was "made on the advice of journalists, scholars, and other individuals familiar with the history of video games and their role in society" and was announced yesterday, May 5th, during a special ceremony at The Strong.

This year's inductees include the following:
  • Grand Theft Auto III
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • The Oregon Trail
  • The Sims
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Space Invaders

In June of last year the first class of the World Video Game Hall of Fame—DOOM, Pong, Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros., Tetris, and World of Warcraft—were announced at The Strong museum in Rochester, New York.

Video games are nowadays widely recognized in society with their iconic figures and titles. Holding such events is one of the many ways to celebrate video games and bring them to a wider audience.

they have to drag this out so they can have a new "inductee's" each year, but yeah i agree GTA 3 was the one that started the GTA craze back in the PS2 days, i think the whole each specific title being another "inductee" rather than the specific franchise/character is again, just another way to drag it out so they always have good/memorable titles every year

they probably have the lists ready for the next 10 years
2017
streets of rage
alex kidd in miracle land
sonic 2
smash bro's brawl
pokemon red

2018
portal
duck hunt
gta vice city
lemmings
monkey island
etc etc

see its pretty easy to just pluck 5 random memorable games out of the hat per year

Sonic is already on there, he need no sequel there
Melee is more memorable, don't you think? even the N64 is more memorable
San Andreas shine way better too

I've been aware of this since April 9th, except that it was more games... Or was that only "nominations" and these are those that were actually picked?

yeah I'm just saying the fact they have like 40 years worth of games to catch up with picking 5 games per year is obviously going to drag a bit to get all the oldies out of the window, and they are listing specific titles so who knows its only the second event we don't really know what kind of limits they have, who says they wont add sonic 1,2,3 and sonic and knuckles, and yeah the lists were just an example of how you can just pluck names from the hat when you have the whole back catalogue of games to choose from and when your limited to 5/6 titles there is always going to be games that dont make it, not because they arent worthy but because you can only choose 5 at a time

and i think they just go off what started the boom and while gta 1/2/ london where the real origin of the GTA series you can easily see that without GTA 3 being as successful as it was, vice city and san andreas never would have happened

Isn't it a bit late? I would've expected Sonic to be one of the first inductees.
The inductees' selection was "made on the advice of journalists, scholars, and other individuals familiar with the history of video games and their role in society". I wonder who they were..

That was most likely the nominees. The inductees were only announced on May 5th

Sonic the Hedgehog, famous only for bypassing an entire generation's collective sense of taste and quality and worming its way into people's nostalgia, where it continues to be lauded for appealing to shallow "cool" values eons ago. Congrats Sonic, you were the biggest scam to hit the arts that video gaming has ever known.

At least the games were different each time.

I would make a comment on the lack of Mega Man 2, but it appears that argument has already sailed.
Thanks, Foxi. At least Mega Man is supposed to get a reboot next year. Maybe. IDK at this point.
Maybe I should recommend the adding of Berzerk instead?
...Or Descent?
...And why did it take so long to add Space Invaders..?
...Now I'm just rambling, don't mind me...
...*Mumbles something about Metroid Fusion*...

I agree with him GTA 3 didn't define open world gaming, a lot of people I have seen on other places would say Shenmue deserves a place over GTA 3 and I agree, much better game.
GTA III definitely defined open world gaming thats a joke lol, also Shenmue being a "better game" which i strongly disagree with Shenmue is trash, has nothing to do with the impact the game made. Shenmue does not come anywhere near GTA III cultural impact.

Comparing GTAs popularity to Shenmue is actually really funny

GTAs were made to appeal to the mass market casuals that buy those kind of games, I have only played GTA 3 and GTA 5 and felt them to be both a waste of time. Hell GTA 5 compared to other open world games was a let down, you see a building in the distance and you can't even go in. I still stand by my point that Shenmue is a better game then GTA3 for its time, and Skyrim is a far better game then GTA 5 in its time period but because $150 million was spent on marketing (paying off reviewers) GTA 5 got the high scores and everyone lapped it up even though it hasn't improved that much.

That is even worse, I don't even get how you went from a great game like Skyrim to saying i like drawer opening simulators, I think maybe you think I am saying that GTA games are the worst games ever made but I don't agree with that either. There were a lot of good games that came out during the GTA 3 era that should have gotten into the hall of fame before GTA3.

- Final Fantasy 9
- Pokemon Gold & Silver
- Shenmue 1 & 2
- Skies of Arcadia
- Soul Calibur 1 & 2
- Spider Man
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
- Super Mario Sunshine
- Zelda: OOT
- Zelda: Oracle Series
- Zelda: Wind Waker

It's like you don't even understand the point of a "Hall of Fame", emphasis on the FAME. Regardless if you like GTA 3 or the GTA series as a whole or not, the impact it's had on video game culture is not debatable. Every game currently in the hall of fame are also known by people who haven't even played video games in their lives. Fuck, I bet a good portion of young gamers didn't even know what Shenmue was until that Kickstarter at last years E3.

Also, what would be the point of having sequels of games already on the list going in directly after their predecessors?

All of these games have become synonymous with their genres:

DOOM > FPS
Grand Theft Auto III > Open World
The Legend of Zelda > Action/Adventure
Pac-Man > Arcade
Pong > Sport/Arcade
The Sims > Life simulation
Sonic the Hedgehog > Platformer
Space Invaders > Arcade
Super Mario Bros. > Platformer
Tetris > Puzzle
World of Warcraft > MMORPG
Pokemon Red/Green > RPG

Some of these games weren't the first to do what defines them, but they damn sure improved upon it. What your doing is putting personal feelings over facts. Who cares if it was made to "appeal to the mass market casuals that buy those kind of games", this is the "Hall of Fame", not the Hall of Hipsters.

What? Reboot? Where?
The only thing really megaman related to next year is the cartoon (that no one is talking about)
And Mighty nº9 is not even related to megaman, besides it's creator and inspiration
Yeah, sorry; the reboot cartoon is what I was talking about. Am I having too high expectations to not be hoping for a new game as well though? To go along with it?
Ah well.

Eh, i think Capcom can't handle Megaman anymore
Of course, as a fan, i would be hyped until my death for a new megaman game (especially on the X series), but i learned to accept defeat on this franchise
