Wii U production might stop in 2018

Following rumors of an early end and being swiftly denied by Nintendo, it seems like the WiiU could indeed meet its end in 2018.

Following today's financial report, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima has revealed that production of the WiiU could cease in March 2018, a year after the release of the NX.

This might come as a surprise since the general trend that the company has followed with previous consoles was to keep the old generation around for a while. However the WiiU hasn't been the big N's best-selling console and it probably wants everyone to move on.

Think of it this way; the Wii U is ARM based (I think), and the PS4/X-Box are based on complete other things (something like MIPS). So, you must rewrite tons of code just to manage running it on the Wii U. But that's not all! You also have to take into account graphics modifications, hardware limitations, and so. Much. More. Please, don't think it's just about remapping a button here and a button there (although they must do that too, which adds to the process even further). It's not that simple!
Wii U is PowerPC, and Xbone, and PS4 are AMD x86.

Im happy with what the wii u turned out as even though it wasnt the best selling it definitely has some of the greatest games produced by nintendo in a while. I got more than my moneys worth (i never really expected much anyways.)
Mario Kart 8
Bayonetta 2
Super Smash Bros.
Pikmin 3

This lot? Wouldn't really call it the 'greatest' games ever produced by Nintendo.

At least as someone who doesn't play video games as much as he'd like (excluding Pokemon) and has stuck by Nintendo for a couple reasons, those are the best in a while. Basically a casual gamer.

I saw people shitting on the Wii U. Guys, you should know that the Wii U was just a marketing flaw, nothing more nothing less. And When we say marketing flaw => less people attracted to the thing => less consumers => less interest in third party => Console Flaw. So stop shitting on the console itself, the fun that I had with the Wii U (and that I'm still having) is huge.
lack of 3rd party support is detrimental to a console though.

I prefer to buy consoles after they have died. To that end I might.

On that note it cost me only 60 bucks to get a Wii in 2014! That was awesome, and the price doubled as I got Brawl, Colosseum, the Bonus Disc to that, and XD: Gale of Darkness. Wii was an ebay purchase too, along with the Colosseum bonus disc, I was stunned, and both fully work.

I might look into buying a Wii U when the price has dropped. We still need to see what they make of the NX!

The Wii U was a failed experiment by Nintendo, but was still a great start for Nintendo. Personally the Gamepad was an Awesome addition, bringing the DS experience to the TV. It was also N's first Full HD console, so i give them credit for that. Also, there's a lot of great looking Wii U Games (WindWakerHD, NFS-MWU, COD, etc). Long live the Wii U!

EDIT:

I'm going back to Gamecube......

Spring was never waiting for us, Nintendo It ran one step ahead As we followed in the dance Between the parted pages and were pressed In NXs hot, fevered iron Like a striped pair of pants the Wii U is melting in the dark All the sweet, First party Software flowing down Someone left the Wii U out in the rain I don't think that I can fake it 'Cause it took so long to gain respect it And I'll never have that system again, oh noooooo I recall the orange light updating my system like a wave On the ground around your knees Birds like tender babies in your hands And the MLG playing SMB4, by the GameCube

In reply to that picture. I use to listen to the original version of this song all the time it's Macaurthor Park or something like that :D

this post made me laugh a lot thanks !!

Hey, it's their First HD console. Why the hell are you killing my Comment!?
If it was basically an engineering impossibility, or would have taken actively doing something to dodge it, to design a console that did not output HD then I can hardly give credit for them taking a big leap. It would be like congratulating me for buying a new petrol car that could break the speed limit -- everything on the market will probably do it, and if not then it will probably be something special that does not. To that end if ATI/AMD, Intel and Nvidia (all the options for graphics chip vendors doing anything good in 3d) all were doing chips, designs, fabs and such that were geared towards HD graphics then it is hardly like Nintendo dragged anybody kicking and screaming into the glorious world of 1992 or so in PCs.
