Nexus 7 is the best bet IMHO, it's only 100 bucks and it's very powerful, I purchased one around 6 months ago and I use it to play n64 and DS games, they play flawlessly. Plus I'd recommend you to get an iPega 9023, together they make a perfect retro console.

Pretty much any Android device can emulate N64 games these days but if you want one with dedicated game controls the GPD XD seems good. It has proper analog sticks unlike most handheld devices.

You can also get a gamepad with a stand built in such as the Moga Pocket so that you can stick your phone in it and use it like it was a Nvidia Shield Portable.

It looks too similar to the n3ds lol.

My shitty gophone can emulate it pretty decently. There's some slowdowns on certain games but that's it.
You really don't need to go searching for a holy grail if a phone, you just need to get a decent one.

The original model is discontinued but there is the new Nvidia Shield K1 which is even more powerful. Plus, it only costs $200.

I can attest to that, I got myself one for Christmas and when it comes to emulators, it runs N64 very well, some games aren't perfect ( no emulator is), but I haven't had any real issues.

So what emulator and build is recommended for Android? I've been using N64oid v2.7, but is there something better or more recently updated out there?

I was impressed with Tendo 64, I personally prefer it because you can save configurations per game as opposed to mupen64 where it's global. And there's options like downloading game cover's and cheats automatically and the gui is really good. Plus it's based on mupen anyways.

Not a huge fan of tablets, I'm quite happy with the portable so far.

I hope they release a portable 2 in the near future, and that they consider a worldwide release :)

It's seriously such an overlooked machine, it looks ugly even to some but when you try it out you fall in love with it (creepy lol), plus remote play with PS4 is awesome.
