Hello!
In recent days, there have been many developments within the 3DS homebrew community, with one of them being kernel access! With this, we now have a way to downgrade 3DSs and do whatever we want with kernel on >=9.3 3DSs. What's that? You want to downgrade? Well then, here's how...

PLEASE NOTE: JP N3DS Users, you'll need to remove the 000400102002CA00 title in order to not get bricked! Not sure if other regions need to do this as well.

ALSO NOTE: I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOUR 3DS BRICKS. If it does, I'm sorry, but it is NOT my fault.

CIA STUFF:

Need some firmware CIAs and can't find them? Never fear. Even though I can't directly link them here, I can tell you that if you Goodle (including the quotation marks) "[MEGA] [CIA/BIN] MSET 4.X & 6.X backups, Browser backups, Update packs (All Regions)" you may just find what you're looking for. ;)
You can verify that you've gotten the right .zip file and that everything is okay by comparing the file's MD5 and SHA-1 hashes (generated on this great site) to this handy chart below.

TUTORIAL:
Before beginning, remove any DNSs (like Tubehax) that you may have on your 3DS. This can interfere with the downgrading process. You may also want to back up your SD card juuuust in case...
  1. Grab the sysUpdater app from here and place it into the '3ds' folder of your SD card.
  2. Make a folder called 'updates' on the root of your SD card.
  3. Place all of the CIAs for the update you wish to downgrade to into the folder.
  4. Eject your SD card, put it into your 3DS, and boot.
  5. Open up the Homebrew Launcher in your entrypoint of choice and start the sysUpdater app.
  6. If everything goes well, you should have some options. Since we're downgrading, you can go ahead and press the Y button.
  7. Wait and DO NOT touch anything. The app will tell you when it is done. (It took me less than 5 minutes)
  8. Once the app prompts you that it is done, wait. It will reboot automatically.
  9. Bite your fingernails in suspense. If everything goes correct...
  10. Your 3DS will be downgraded! :D
COMMON PROBLEMS:
Issue: The app freezes at a certain step!
Solution: Try a different entrypoint. I was using Ironhax and got this problem, so I switched to OoT3DHax and it worked.

Issue: The prompt comes on screen, but nothing happens when I press a button!
Solution: Either wait a few moments or reboot the system and try again.

Issue: I downgraded, but my 3DS screen is completely black upon reboot!
Solution: Try removing the SD card, or you can reboot into recovery mode. To do this, hold A+R+L+Up as your 3DS turns on.

(please recommend any other issues and solutions to add here please!)

DATA GATHERING:
There is an optional little thing you can do here that helps collect data about the 3DS downgrade process. Do it if you feel like it. :)

As a suggestion, you should consider changing the main post to using PlaiSysUpdater instead of SysUpdater. The Plai version was completely rewritten including many safety features such as that the important titles that can cause fraken-firmware if they error during the install (such as the browser and system settings titles) are installed LAST.

Another note you should REALLY add: I was helping a friend hack his 3DS over skype. EVERY SINGLE TIME he tried to downgrade, he got a franken-firmware and had to use recovery mode. We could not figure out what was going on. Tried multiple versions and forks of sysUpdater. Nothing seemed to be working. ...And then he told me he was using a 128GB micro sd (class 10 sandisk) in his N3DS to do the downgrade. He had formatted it to FAT32 correctly and everything, but the FIRST time we tried the downgrade on his 4GB card that came with the N3DS it worked.

TL;DR PlaiSysUpdater > SysUpdater
Pls add a note NOT to use any sd card over 32GB for downgrading.

Is there a way to manually upgrade to a specific firmware or does this still work with 10.7.0-32U? I'm on 9.9.0-26U on my 2ds

I'm not 100% sure what you're asking, but there's no need to update. Ver. 9.9.0-26U is downgradable. 10.7 is hackable, but browserhax and menuhax are BROKEN! You MUST own a copy of Cubic Ninja or Ocarina of time and a powersaves or another hacked 3ds. This is the only way on versions 10.6 and up. The best thing for you to do is stay on 9.9 and downgrade from there.

I want to share my experience with n3DS as it was pretty frustrating, and might help someone out there, here we go.

I first did my o3DS XL (EU), It was not exactly smooth but was done eventually.
After which I went ahead and bought a New 3DS XL Hyrule Edition (US) that came with firmware 10.3.
Did a downgrade to 9.2, and followed a Youtube tutorial to setup Reinand.
Unfortunately I kept getting a RED screen every time I ran Reinand or EmuNAND9 :(
After testing, reading and testing for HOURS, i finally ran "Downgrade-Check" homebrew, and guess what? downgrade was not complete! yet It was showing 9.2.

So next step was to update the n3DS back to 10.3 again and re-downgrade, sadly it was not as smooth as I hoped (sysUpdater kept hanging all the time).
So I decided to instead downgrade to 9.1, still sysUpdater kept hanging again and again

With a different strategy (removing the Battery), "SafesysUpdater" finally ran! though I was scared cause it only modified ONE file and hanged at rebooting! at that moment I was sure I got a brick.
Removed the battery, tried to switch on...It turned ON :D 9.2.
Ran Downgrade-check, it was a proper downgrade now!

Tested Reinand, and is working now :D

From my experience, I would suggest doing below to to avoid wasting time:
- Run Downgrade check "first thing" after a downgrade.
- With sysUpdater, keep trying again and again, it worked with me almost 4th time when I started removing the battery (Menuhax).

Thanks

Use PlaiSysUpdater next time. Much, MUCH more stable. Glad to hear it worked out for you in the end.

So I successfully downgraded and installed CFW but now i have a new 32 gb sd card and would like to redo the whole process (to do it in a more clean setup). My question is, in order to restore the 3ds to stock so i can do the process all over can i just upgrade sysnand and be rid of CFW and any other things i have done and do the process again, or can i just install the new sd card and start the process again. Just want to make sure before doing anything.

No need to re-downgrade, that's risky. Just use EmuNAND9 or a similar tool to backup your emuNAND to emuNAND.bin. Then use EmuNAND9 to create an emuNAND partition on your new sd card, and restore EmuNAND.bin to it. Then just move over all your files from the old sd card to the new one and boom! You're good to go!

Thanks for the quick response, I just tried this and successfully changed my SD card. Loving CFW so far

What are the advantages over EmuNAND?

Thanks
Everything.
- Future-proof (hax are PERMANENT, you can uninstall if you want though for some reason.)
- INSANE FAST BOOT TIMES. My N3ds XL with a 16GB card boots in 7 seconds.
- 100% boot success rate. NEVER FAILS EVER!
- boot looks just like a unhacked 3ds.... unless you dont want it to.
- payload exists to boot with custom animations if you want
- NAND backups and restores WITHOUT A HARDMOD (your console is basically brick-proof AFTER you get a9lh on there)
- CFW running on sysnand over emunand, simplifies everything. only have to install VC games once for example.
- Luma3DS running on a9lh supports up to 2 emuNANDS if you REALLY wanna keep using it..... but its sooo much better to just run updated sysnand mode. Just simplifies everything and has absolutely no more risk than an emunand. Id even say less, in fact.
- and more, can't list EVERYTHING.

The BIG draw is the ability to backup and restore your NAND without a hardmod. Even if you completely brick your system, you can just restore it back to a working point ezpz. If you wanna give this a shot, follow this guide HERE, if you already have UNLINKED NANDs (you formatted one NAND or the other after making your emuNAND) and your emuNAND is already updated, then just start at section 4 and follow the guide VERY CAREFULLY. When it says redNAND in the guide, just pretend it's saying emuNAND. They are a little bit different, but you don't need to concern yourself with details. For this purpose, they are the same thing. When you get to section 5, choose the guide for Luma3DS. It's just easier to work with imo. There are always risks involved when downgrading and such, so I take no responsibility if you brick your system, but as long as you do everything right, the procedure has become VERY safe and easy to do since when it first came out.

FAIR WARNING!: Because of all the backing up and restoring and downgrading you'll be doing to install a9lh, it can take quite a few hours to do. Make sure you have lots of free time before you start.

Also, if you're interested I have a discord server open for chat. I'm always online when home and willing to help out with anything 3ds related. We have a few other people who also have hacked 3ds'. We pretty much just share info, hang out, and play games. I'm trying to get more people involved. No offense taken if you don't wanna join, but if you're interested let me know and I'll PM you and invite link.

A9LH & EmuNAND aren't exclusive. You can have both at the same time.

Please actually READ my post before you comment on it, thanks. I Know you can have both and mentioned that in my post.

Wohoo! Thank you very very much for the extensive answer, really appreciate it.

The boot-up time alone would be worth it to me ;) will make sure to check it out.

Thanks again
