I just want to confirm whether or not it is safe for me to update my WiiU right now. I'm currently on 5.5, and would like to be safe for homebrew / etc when it comes out.

Also, if there is a way to update software while bypassing a system update, that would work too. Thanks for the help.

It's probably safe to update to 5.5.1. That being said, you do so at your own risk. Personally, I would stay on 5.5 just to be safe.
In addition, there is no way I'm aware of to update software while bypassing a system update if you're on 5.5.

quit updating your shit, seriously.
I was trying to update mario maker so I could PLAY IT, and was told I needed to update my wiiU, which I don't really want to do. Guess I will let it gather dust until exploit release then.

just play it without updating it? you can play it on 5.3.2.

Online won't let you use it without an update
Then play it offline.

You can update to 5.5.1 in order to regain the online features of Mario Maker, but that's just a stopgap measure. What's going to happen when, hypothetically, 5.5.2 comes out and isn't safe to update to? You might update to 5.5.1 today before requiring a hypothetical 5.5.2 tomorrow.

I would resign myself to offline play until we have an emuNAND solution.

Instead of jumping in on a question with a snarky response maybe read it properly? Somebody politely points this out and you are still continuing? xD

FWIW.... I've updated to 5.5.1 based on people saying I should be ok. If for some reason I'm not, I'm not going to throw my toys out of the pram. Personally I want to enjoy all the features of a game that I've paid for and I'm not particularly interested in Loadline etc. Not having online for Mario Maker kinda cripples the experience.

True. But there are ways to play your games online and stay at a lower firmware at the same time (as long as you use your own games and not backups on Loadiine).
Block nintendos DNS or just use the TubeHax ones, try to run the browserexploit and just use NUSinstaller to update your console "manualy".
I think everything that will interes you on this topic can be found here:

To be clear, this will not work if one is already on system version 5.5.0.

And another topic that will just end up confusing the crap out of kids because the majority of this community isn't able to give a nice and direct answer to a nice and clear question.
"Don't but do IF, unless THAT" here,
"Let's clarify my knowledge on something that doesn't even fit your situation" there,
and my personal favorite despite or because of being the worst
"Let's be butt-hurt because i am to stubborn to admit that i misread or didn't contribute something and everytime someone points it out i need to make up another pointless, off-topic excuse or just insult them"...
I have joked about this before and i know this isn't the proper procedure, but i would GLADLY apply as a moderator with this post and keep an eye on stuff like this, by now,
because

-Half the community is pissed about reoccurring topics and questions despite the fact that this forum is everything but easy-to-browse for the novice just looking at the sheer amount of completely different topics popping up all the time at a rate that can confuse the most experienced reader after some weeks of not following, even tho they all contribute to threads being unclear by saltfighting, immaturity and even plain troll sometimes.

- The stickies and searchfunctions can help, if written by experienced members and nicely organized, and if the person reading them doesn't get overwhelmed by terms and content, seeing as those allways go into the hundreds of pages. BUT are NOT an excuse to ambush everyone who just comes in and asks a question, even if it HAD been asked so many times, before.
Just remember that this can be confusing to anybody and yet the community browsing Nintendo-subforums has a comparably big relative amount of children reading in.

And to just stress this again:
-This is a forum, a place to exchange information about a certain topic (hence topics). If the question is direct, give a direct answer! know something you think people don't? make a topic! Got this topic allready? politely link someone to it and request deletion! don't agree with something or don't know about stuff? don't force yourself in by attention-whoring, changing the topic, insulting or to raise some imaginary e-peen from your post-number...
Agression, troll, repeated "additional 'help' " that literally comes up in EVERY topic somewhat scratching the term firmware (Just the example for this case) and off-topic exchange of opinion can happen and isn't that bad if it is just ignored, but generally has no place there unless asked for BY OP, and then only in the appropiate subforums. If you feel to limited by these things, just go and create a private conversation. I feel like that function is underused, anyways

And last but not least, i feel the need to mention that i noticed the irony in my post, because this is as off-topic as it can get, but i actually mean what i said about moderating this forum, and maybe also those for 3DS every now and then, given that i would be granted to do so and the staff wouldn't mind me actually removing all those blatantly confusing and useless posts, should this not get attention i will also copy this and paste it somewhere appropriate to actually apply in the usual order.
Also i feel that i may have over-reacted to this particular situation, so just look at this as a reflection of my feelings towards the entire WiiU-Homebrew-Subforum as it is right now.

So to answer OP at least and hopefully clear any confusion:
Updating should be safe but if you can live with not playing online right now, it's still a better idea not to,
I don't do it, but if you really need to do it, do it now before a less safe firmwareupdate arrives!

EDIT: Call me a hypocrite, but I just btw totally updated because i need to update Sploot since i am visiting some friends to play it with tomorrow, so here is crossing fingers that 5.5.x doesnt make a difference for things, yet.

I can agree that the shitposting and noobposting on here make it extremely difficult to understand what the truth of matters actually are. :( I believe this topic answered my own questions on the matter, but outside of one or two comments, the rest of the topic's posts are completely useless and painful. The only positive thing they do is bump the topic for the sidebar of the front page, which allows me to notice the 'active topic' and know what popular homebrew news currently is. Getting factual information, however, is a near impossibility.

The only solution I see is having reliable moderators edit-reply the top post so that a concrete truthful answer is provided on cases like this. *shrug*

the vram is one advantage when it comes to AI but ends up being slower even with that and really AI is the only use case that needs more than 12gb vram right now

    Interesting lol

I think I watched a video where two games at 4K where eating just over 16GB of RAM and it's the one case where the 7900XT and XTX pulled ahead (minus RTX of course)
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.

cyberpunk at 4k without DLSS/fidelityfx *might* exceed 12gb
    +1
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but that game barely runs at native 4k
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think it was some newer games and probably poorly optimized PS4 or PS5 ports
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
they definitely will age better but i feel dlss might outweigh that since it looks about as good as native resolution and much less demanding

When I played Cyberpunk on my old 2080 Ti it sucked lol

AMD could introduce something comparable to DLSS but nvidia's got a lot more experience with that
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
least amd 7xxx has tensor cores which the previous generations didn't so there is the potential for AI upscaling
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
They have FSR or whatever it's called and yeah it's still not great
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
so AMD seem to finally be starting to take AI seriously
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Oh yeah those new 8000 CPUs have AI cores built in that's interesting
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Maybe they plan on offloading to the CPU?
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Would be kinda cool to have the CPU and GPU working in random more
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Tandem even
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the nvidia shield tv has AI video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
LLMs can be run on cpu anyway but it's quite slow

Have you ever been beaten by a wet spaghetti noodle by your girlfriend because she has a twin sister, and you got confused and fucked her dad?

I had a girlfriend who had a twin sister and they would mess with me constantly.... Until one chipped a tooth then finally I could tell them apart.... Lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
They would have the same hair style the same clothes everything... Really messed with my head lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
