Anyway OP, if you're gonna do the hardmod thing, the time is now. 10.5 is still the latest firmware and I hear 2DS systems are easier to hardmod than say, regular-sized O3DS systems. You can downgrade to 10.3, then back to 9.2, install some dank Menuhax and autoboot your favorite CFW.
Thanks for the hint, but this is not my 2DS and I want to spend the minimum amount of time to get it working again and then be done with it.

I'm probably going to try the hardmod on Sunday. Do you think a regular microSD adapter and SD card reader will be fine?

It should be, but some people have reported issues with cheap "generic" brand mSD adapters and readers.

I believe the only way out of this soft brick is to use safe mode to update back. Then downgrade again. Since 10.4 blocked downgrades, You'll need to nand mod it to downgrade it. At that point you might as well restore your nand backup if you have one. Otherwise if not, use this method to downgrade a 10.5 console once you have it nand modded:

Do I HAVE to downgrade the system again? What if my roommate is happy with 10.5 and plans on not hacking it again? If I manage to restore my backed up NAND, the system should be on 8.1 without any modifications, so we could also just leave it at that.

in the german forum.wii-forum.com is a guy named ciapa that offers hardmod downgrade service for 35€ - you can send the 2ds with a copy of your nand and he will flash it. or pay 15€ and he will include a micro usb connector into the case of your console.

IDK if this thing I'll say now was said before, but have you tried updating the console's FW via a original cartridge (if possible)?

Edit: NVM... Apparently, not possible after all: https://tcrf.net/Nintendo_3DS#Hidden_Key_Combination
The link also says: "You will not have an internet connection or be able to use StreetPass". Now it's obvious why ninjhax won't work...

Another idea (maybe really stupid, but IDK): What about if you install NinjHax for the 2DS actual FW version (loading the appropriate QR code) but using another console and then try again?

Ninjhax would still require the web browser to exploit the system, even if the QR code was parsed previously. If I'm not wrong, only ninjhax 2.X can boot without the browser. This was a problem for users who had no browser and wanted homebrew (As the browser didn't come with cartridge updates and updating would put the user on non-desired FW).

Oh, that's a pity!... And then, if only OP's 2DS console have some FW between 9.0 - 9.2 maybe using CN or OoT3D (for any *hax 2.x) could be a good and enough option, but... then no. Sorry!

Maybe one of you can help me: I'm at a point where I can read the device's NAND with Win32 Disk Imager (I read the full NAND which has the exact same size as my backup I did back then). But if I want to write my backup to the NAND, Win32 Disk Imager gives me an error:
"An error occurred while attempting to write data to handle. Error 1117: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

Does anyone have an idea where the failure point could be? I though that because I'm able to read the NAND, writing to the NAND shouldn't be a bit problem...

Edit: Just tried another card reader, same problem.

Maybe the write protection slider of your SD adapter is set to LOCK.
Try blocking it altogether with some tape or something.

Guys, thank you so much! Mission complete!

I only burnt two of my fingers and it took like 4 or 5 hours, but everything is working perfectly. You can't imagine how good this feels. :D

Edit: One more question: Is there any reason why a system update might fail if we do it now? As I said earlier, we don't care about hacking it anymore, so it would be fine to update to 10.5 or whatever the latest version is.

Awesome! Now upgrade that thing to 9.2 and install homemenuhax + ctrbootmanager and RxTools :)

Edit: just realised you're using Gateway, so better to stick with that ;)

I actually don't use a Gateway, I just had the Gateway emuNAND and used RxTools to boot into it. But I won't spend any more time on that thing, my roommate (it's her 2DS) doesn't want the hacks anymore and she already bought the game she wants to play. ;)

In that case just update normally, it will be fine. Glad everything worked out ok.
