GameTrailers Closes After 13 Years

The video game trailer website GameTrailers has announced via their official twitter account that they are closing down after 13 years:

Launched in 2002, the website was the go-to place for many video game amateurs who stick to the website especially during big video game events. The website's termination comes after its purchase by Defy Media back in 2014 and now the news came in (below is GameTrailers' Associate Editor, Ben Moore):

It's sad, but I expected as much. You no longer need to go to any specific website to watch the latest trailers - they're all over Digital Distribution services like PSN, XB Store, Steam and eShop. You can't avoid them even if you want to - they're plastered on Youtube either way. This specialization is simply dying off, they needed to shift focus and re-brand years ago if they wanted to survive.

True true but moving to Twitch as @chartube12 said sounds like a plausible option for them.

I remember when AVGN uploaded to GT. Just surprised that GT survived this long in an age with YouTube being the first place to go to for trailers.

Yeah since it stopped being plausible to have your visitors install or use the windows media player plugin/addon I only really saw them surviving on original content, which they slowly nerfed (not to mention the stuff I enjoyed would probably not have been enough to carry the site anyway). Hopefully said original content migrates to somewhere I can still see it or otherwise remains in some capacity.

They did do good E3 streams though.

Others reckon things should be reborn as a twitch channel, can I say youtube instead as twitch is a pain to get working on my machines and I am not a fan of the search/ui there (and youtube at least has https://github.com/YePpHa/YouTubeCenter/wiki/Developer-Version ).

A real shame and even though I haven't used the site in years, their podcast GT Time I've listened to every week since it started and will really miss it.
I wish them all the best and maybe they'll try a patreon or something to keep their best stuff alive.

Yeah, it used to be the place to go but in recent years it's been a bit pointless. I get trailers rammed down my throat by every bloody video on YouTube (I can't be the only one who has the first few unskippable seconds of that trailer for The Division permenantly burned into their retinas) and when they stopped doing Pop Fiction I lost all interest. It had a good run but ultimately failed to keep pace and give us a unique reason to be there. They have a good legacy behind them but I won't miss what they were at the end.

You might be. Most of the rest of the world seems to use some variation on the theme of adblock.

There's no AdBlock for the PS3's YouTube app. My laptop has truly woeful stats so I use the PS3 to watch everything. I'm sure if I hacked the firmware I could find some sort of AdBlock program, but I'm too lazy.

aw what a shame! that place was nothing but trolls in the forums and the mods were all nazis and would ban you if you didn't agree with them. maybe if they cleaned up their site and their mods weren't such pricks they'd still be around.

so who is next ign or gamespot? ign has practically killed themselves with livefyre

Wow a laptop so bad that someone would sooner suffer the PS3 web browser and/or applications... I should say if you can scrape together just over £100 (possibly even £100 at times if offers are going on) you can get a perfectly acceptable refurb laptop that will do very well
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Refurb/Refurbished+Laptops/ Get it to £200 and you can get a nice slightly older business grade laptop that will do even better.

For the PS3 specifically I am not sure what goes as far as local network fun (though http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/adblock-everywhere-raspberry-pi-hole-way/ reckons there is scope for it)

I do have to say my on bed book reading laptop has a blazingly fast 1.6GHz celeron processor and it does youtube OK, albeit only in 480p (720 can happen but I have to be aware of what I am running). If yours is better than that (and it probably is) you might wish to look at what is running in the background.

They had a great forum I think, with xp and factions... well until they gradually took everything unique and good away.

I'm sure the good people there will find new jobs that are a lot like the ones they are losing now. Sounds like it was really a surprise to the people working there that they were getting fired, which I think seems very strange.
