Hi!,

I'm new and just mod my wii. I did the letterbomb hack, got my homebrew channel, homebrew browser and usbloader GX. I got the loader to recognize my HD and games on it but it crashes and returns to homebrew channel when trying to start a game. In the credits on the top right it says Rev1256 IOS58(Rev 6176)+AHB.

Not sure what other info is necessary. If I can find out how to do a system check I will do that.

Posting a System Check

The latest revision of USB Loader GX is r1260. You might give it a try.

It sounds like you may not have any custom IOS installed. You need one like d2x for Wii games.

Gambia, The
the cIOS is responsible for HDD compatibility, not game's compatibility.
v8 should be able to play all games.

Some games might require different base (IOS56, IOS57, IOS58), or a specific setting in your loader (video, patches, block IOS reload, etc.)
hello i saw you name helping people in wii formus, so this is the reason why im writing you, i have an problem with my wii, before 2 days i added two new games on my hdd, call of duty mw3 and epic mickey when i try to load each of them, both doesn't work, i saw a tutorial how to fix mw3 and i installed a cIOS250[57]-d2x-v10-beta53-alt.Wad, after that i tried to load any of games on my HDD and all of them freezes, sometime in start up somtimes freezes After 10 min, pls do you have any idea how to fix this issues? Because im at the point where don't know from to start,
PS: it is possible this issue comes from my HDD because i bough before one week to replace my usb? Thnx a lot in advice and sorry for my bad English

I already answered you on your other message. No need to put your question on multiple place.
And you chose a thread which is not the same error than you, why post here?
this thread is about "black screen at launch", not "freeze after 10 min"

Hi. I got Homebrew a veryyyy long time ago (like around 2013) and USB Loader GX is working but I can't launch a game (I get a black screen, just like this thread's main topic) and I'm a noob at Homebrew. When I go into Settings -> Credits on USB Loader GX, it says in the top right "v3.0 IOS249 (Rev 17)" and I don't know how to do the whole ModMii thing. I also just installed the IOS222 thing because its said it would work better that way when starting up. (I also made an account on GBATemp just for the error I got.) Thanks! Any help is appreciated.

"Installing 222" is not enough. having something installed is useless if it's not used by the loader.

like you said, you did it a long time ago, and you have an old custom IOS (rev17)
That's probably why you have the black screen issue, or your video setting is not correct. It should be the same as the region of the game. (PAL game -> PAL video)

What you have to do :
- maybe: update your homebrew channel too (it's probably old).
- maybe: install IOS58
- install a newer cIOS (at least rev21 d2x v8) in the slot 249.

for the first two points : launch the homebrew channel and press the Home button. look at the version and the IOS number.
if it's "1.0.7" or newer, and "IOS58" then you are fine.
if it's not IOS58 or older than 1.0.7, report here. don't do things without confirmation from someone else.

if your HBC is fine (version and IOS) then we will be able to update your cIOS.
again, we will wait for your reply before proceeding to the next step.

My HBC is fine (It says 1.1.0 IOS58 v24.32) so I'm ready to update my cIOS! (Also, in my normal Wii menu, the area where the game disc is supposed to be was occupied by text saying, "Wii System Update" and it said it may detect and remove modifications, so I didn't update it.)
EDIT: I'm gonna quickly check the video settings.
EDIT 2: I changed it to System Settings from Global, still same thing. Anyways it should be the default.

Bump?
Is anyone there?

I would like to update it ASAP.
I went here and downloaded the d2x-v10-beta53-alt.zip file which I don't know what to do with, but reading the ReadMe I found out that you can install it 2 ways, one with an installer and one with ModMii. I think I'm gonna do ModMii, but I'm going to wait for an answer first.
EDIT: I changed my mind. The installer seams easier.

The right version doesn't install when using the installer, and the cIOS doesn't appear in ModMii. I guess I can use ModMii now, but I don't know how to make the cIOS appear. Help please?
Edit: I think it's working. I'm using the command line module for ModMii and we should be up and ready in no time!
Edit 2: The Settings -> Credits now says v3.0 IOS249 (Rev 21008) (d2x v8final base80) after installing the WAD and it still doesn't work! What am I doing wrong?

The v10-alt versions are for if you need to use both USB ports for a HDD. You would only want v10-beta52 if you're going for the latest one.

v10 is not the "stable" version but many use it all the time. v8 is the one you might want to try first.

ModMii method:
Go to download page 4. You should see (in red) on the right column "(d2x) cIOSs". The one you want is entry "24956". You can just type that in. It wouldn't hurt to get "25057" as well for the few games that need IOS57. If you want to use v10 type "beta" and select the v10 version you want then use the same numbers as above. "D" will download and build WAD files for you. If you need a WAD manager they are on Download page 2 - either "MMM" for Multi-Mod Manager or "YAWM" are good. (MMM doesn't work with Wii Motion+)

d2x Installer:
Cyan has a preconfigured zip file with what's needed to install from it. (link) There's a brief note about how to use it here.

Thanks for the reply! I will try that now, and edit it if it works or not.
Edit: Trying for ModMii, it says in the credits v3.0 IOS249 (Rev 21008) (d2x v8final base56) and the game I tried to play (Dood's Big Adventure) still does not work, with the same black screen. Should I try the d2x installer?

You can but it builds the same patched IOS that ModMii does. If the USB Loader GX credits say d2x v8 then you've got that part fixed. Did you try a different game and see if it works? Also, is the game the same region as your Wii?

Wait for Cyan to respond before you try to install anything else. It could just be a problem with the loader settings or your storage drive.

well I can't really test any other games, but I might try later. As for the video settings, I double checked everything but it still doesn't work.
I could try to find something but a flash drive.. that may be the problem
Edit: I'm gonna swap some stuff. Maybe gonna use the SD card as the game loader and the USB drive as the apps loader, will that work? (Since right now the SD card is apps loader and is 8GB, the USB drive is the game loader and is 4GB, I never thought of this before.)

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

And I'm gonna use Wii Backup Manager instead of WBFS Manager.

@Ayan I'm away for the weekend but when I get back home on Monday I can try launching that game on my console and see if I can get it working. That is if you don't get it fixed before then.

Sorry I didn't answer sooner. I see you could install the cIOS.

Should I try the d2x installer?
based on that info, you correctly updated the cIOS.
d2x v8 final, based on IOS56.
Some games might require an IOS57 too, if you followed modmii tutorial, you probably have it installed in slot 250. So you can try to change the loader setttings to use 250 instead of 249 :
Settings > Loader settings > Loader's IOS : 250
Settings > Loader settings > game's IOS : 250

You also said it's "3.0", you don't have the revision number, like "r1260"?
you probably have an old version of the loader, you can find the current latest release here : http://www.mediafire.com/download/33llk7a17ucr25f/R1260.7z
extract it to your SD or USB (the place where you put the homebrew) and launch it from the homebrew channel.

I'm gonna swap some stuff. Maybe gonna use the SD card as the game loader and the USB drive as the apps loader, will that work? (Since right now the SD card is apps loader and is 8GB, the USB drive is the game loader and is 4GB, I never thought of this before.)
USBLoaderGX can only load games from USB, but you can put the application on SD or USB, it has no compatibility differences. You only need a FAT32 partition.

using some trickery
which trickery ?
did you modify the game's file ? or just tried different settings in the loader?

Did you dump the game yourself? are you sure the game is working fine and not corrupted? (you can use WiiBackupManager to verify the game : option > Sha-1)

Thanks for replying. So how I did the SD and USB swap is that I put the (micro)SD card into a USB card reader and Usb into the first port. That way it actually recognizes it well, and there's more space. (And obviously I swapped the files.) I'm gonna try to change the IOS, but before that I will check if it's corrupted (using WiiBackupManager).
I didn't see an option for Game IOS but I changed Loader IOS to 250 and same problem. No Video but Audio is Fine.
Also, the SHA1 check was good but I will reinstall the game from another source to see if it works.

Wow. I forgot to mention this. I forgot where I actually put my other Homebrew SD card, so I just made an apps folder on a fresh USB. I don't really have the boot.elf and everything. So what should I do? Will it be OK without it?

you need the USBLoaderGX files on your SD:/apps/usbloader_gx/ folder. that's all.
If you still have black screen, maybe try an external hard drive instead of flash devices or SD adapters.
Or maybe that game the game you try to play is just not compatible with USBLoaders?
