So here's the skinny.

To try and fix and troubleshoot some stuff, updated my CFW on my 60gig PS3 to 4.78 Rebug, and MultiMan to 4.78.00, as well as updating Rebug toolbox (uninstall, then update CFW, then reinstall FULL pkg).

Among the games that was giving me a ton of trouble was MGS HD Collection. For whatever reason it kept crashing while creating the cache when launched from USB. So my most recent thing to try was to basically FTP my mirror of it from my PC's external to the PS3's internal.

Well, now with this combination, it barely gets in a few transfers complete at a time before the thing hard locks, and I am forced to fully power down the PS3 and use the power button to turn it back on. No doubt it will soon gripe and nag about how it "wasn't shut down properly" and force disk checks every boot at this rate.

Is there a way to solve this problem? At this point I wouldn't even rule out simply downloading a clean rip of it, but my usual sites to check/verify that don't seem to have it anymore. :tpi::ph34r:

Use rebug toolbox FTP. No auto-shutdown and it is quite fast, but honestly the quickest way to transfer games is to get a USB 2.0 and put your game on there then put in into your ps3 then open the file manager on multiman then copy the game to your GAMES folder.

Come again? I've looked all over rebug toolbox's menu, and there is nothing even talking about FTP in there.

Every time I tried to put it on the external drive I got for the PS3, it starts bitching and moaning about the files being too big, and it does it A LOT for some of the other games I have, too. So at present, the only way to make it actually accept them, is to FTP to the internal, and then use multiman to copy them to the external.

Ok. Open rebug toolbox. Go to your system information. It will tell you your IP (example: 127.0.0.1) and then you use your ftp client and it should connect. I am 100% positive there is no auto-shutdown on rebug. :)

AUto-shutdown isn't my problem. My problem is thta the PS3 itself freezes up, then refuses any connections and stops responding to inputs until I physically turn the fucker off and then it won't respond to my controller or BD remote until I use the power button on the console to turn it back on. I thought I made that clear already.

Give multiman and rebug toolbox a try. If those don't work here are your solutions:
1. Don't put ur games to a external
2. Buy a bigger internal (not to expensive) for your ps3
3. Replace thermal paste and clean PS3. See if that could help.
4. Make sure the usb 2.0 is on the 2nd usb port and that no other usb port is active besides usb 2 (So make sure the first usb port has nothing in it and the 2nd has your USB 2.0)

BTW FTP is very unstable with large amounts of files.

Buying another hard drive isn't going to solve my problem. Secondly, I have a USB 3.0 drive that I've already been using on the system for the better part of a year now with no issues. I would prefer to keep them on the external as much as possible.

The problem is particularly now, regardless of whether I have it on rebug toolbox, or multiman, the ps3 just stops responding altogether and stops accepting FTP within a minute of trying. So I can't even test to see if that would solve the problem I've been having.

FTP works completely fine for me on my laptop internal HDD.
Try moving your backup folder from external to internal.
Edit: If you "prefer" to keep everything on external, this probably won't work out and we can't do anything about it.

I use Filezilla as my FTP client btw
Also I use an ethernet cable for it (since it is faster and more stable) by altering my ethernet port's IPv4
Here's the guide I used http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=57363

The PS3 and PC are both wired. But in separate rooms. The external is way bigger than the internal, so moving everything internal is not even remotely practical.

Annoyingly even broke down and found and ran PS3splitter so I could move the mirror of the rip over. but once again, soon as I tried to run it it insisted on copying the files to cache and just stopped about 6% of the way and wouldn't proceed any further; wouldn't let me cancel either, so again, I had to shut down the PS3 by its power button.

This is really getting aggravating. Especially because FTP did work on earlier firmware, but now some of the newer games I wish to play require the newer one to work at all. Especially because I do recall MGS HD working in the past regardless of whether it was on the external or not.

I'd use Webman over Multiman for FTP transfers, I never had much luck with MM.

How are you launching games anyway? From the sounds of it, it sounds like you're using JB rips if it's caching files.

You have Rebug 4.78 Cobra, why not just use the ISO mounting feature and convert the external to NTFS? Probably a lot easier.

I've been using JB rips since forever. The problem is I recall all this working before - the game, off external, worked just fine. And it used to be no problem to FTP to and from.

Now it's crashing or hard locking within minutes of even trying. And it's pissing me off.

Does this kind of stuff get bit-rot or something? because I can't find any other explanation for why it's crashing every time now as opposed to when it did work. It's not like I went to fiddle with it afterward. Also, I thought this stuff would never work on NTFS? The PS3 won't even try to read NTFS to begin with.

The easier method for that ISO loading is I just hook up the external to the PC (formatted NTFS) and drop the ISO on it. Then just use Webman to stream the games over the network. Works fine for me, and fixed a lot of the issues with JB rips so just switched and never looked back. (Just drag and drop ISO to my external drive instead of 5000+ files/not having to copy large files to internal etc...) [again, this is just my personal setup]

Out of curiosity, what happens if you transfer 1-3 small files at a time? The bigger issue with MGS HD is it's like 42GB in size. Does it lock up when you copy some small files over FTP? I could see it locking up on large files due to cache. Then again, I use Webman's FTP

Well supposedly you said the only change you made was 4.78 Rebug, you could always go back to the previous version to see if the problem resolves itself.

Other than using another package to test FTP with (Webman, irisman, or there many forks with Filezilla or a FTP client), I'm at a loss.

Far as I know, one cannot really downgrade CFW's like that; not without basically creating a lot of hassle. While it is true that I did QA flag the thing while I was still able to back on 3.55 kmeaw (wow, that was a classic memory), it's not something I am particularly fond of doing unless absolutely necessary, you know? Also, at least from what I'm saying on psx-scene news, Cobra 7.30 payload just came out, fixed a crapton of bugs (including the pad sync bug on 4.46+) and sis expected to be in a 4.78.2 Rebug. I'm more willing to give that a try and see if that helps before trying to downgrade, you know?

As for MGS HD, I think I'm just going to give up on it on PS3. Though at times, I just wish there were newer sites that would keep track of which settings I needed to set in multiman so newer games would work; it just seems like every new multiman update just wipes out whatever settings I got things working, so now it's all wrong.

You defiintely can if you're properly QA flagged. (used to do it back when the PS2 sync bug was still prevalent so from time to time I'd drop down to Rogero 4.46)

I've been playing the Habib 4.78 with Cobra 7.3 - the PS2 sync fix is great. I don't know why but I tested out FTP over the network and it seems a lot faster than before. (usually get 10MB/s, was getting 22MB while FTPing over a PS2 disc, so when that's released on Rebug perhaps give it a try. Yea that's primarily when I gave up JB rips and swapped over to Cobra/Mamba.

There was a site that had a list, but it hasn't been updated since 2012. It got old when MM would wipe the settings, then trying to remember which disc needed options set, which disc required a disc in the drive, etc...

As I think the original went down long ago.
