I see. But, even if I update emuNAND to 10.5, will I still be able to install MenuHax on it? I think that if I use Homebrew on emuNAND instead of sysNAND, I would be "safer" because if I use a bad CIA file, I could easily reset my emuNAND.
See above in my edit about how menuhax works. There's no need to install any CIAs to your sysNAND.

Ok, I understand. What I mean is, would it not be safer to install cia's onto emuNAND? Because if emuNAND gets bricked, I can still reset it, correct?

Absolutely. That's one of the many benefits of having access to emuNAND.

Another reason you don't need menuhax on emuNAND is because this exists: https://github.com/yellows8/hblauncher_loader

It's a CIA that launches the homebrew launcher directly, no hax needed. It has all of the same limitations as the *hax payloads though, so I'd mostly use it for homebrew that only comes in 3dsx format.

I am kind of confused. You say that I do not need to install MenuHax on emuNAND. But, if I install MenuHax on sysNAND, how would I install CIA's onto emuNAND and where should I place the CIA files? Wouldn't having MenuHax on sysNAND only put the CIA's onto sysNAND? Not on emuNAND?

Menuhax is only used to serve as a springboard into emuNAND. It goes like this, once you have it all set up: turn on the power -> menuhax activates -> your 3DS reboots into CFW/emuNAND -> everything you do there, including CIA installs, happens there on emuNAND, and only on emuNAND. It's like Fight Club. What happens there, stays there.

Oh, I see. Thank you for all of your help. So MenuHax is automatically started when the theme information is loaded right? How would I go back to sysNAND if it automatically puts me in emuNAND at startup?

Depending on how you set it up, you can make it so if you power on your 3DS while holding a particular button, it will boot to sysNAND instead. However, once you have everything set up and running smoothly, there will be no need for you to use sysNAND.

So for using sysUpdater to downgrade to 9.2, I already need to have some entry point or form of *hax so that I can launch the Homebrew Launcher correct? Do I just use IronHax to launch the sysUpdater file, and then when the downgrade is (hopefully) successful, I install MenuHax and then update my emuNAND to 10.5?

Also, is it common for the old 3DS to soft-brick during this process? Or is that just New3ds's? Should I make a NAND dump of my current FW version (9.9) just in case?

I'm not really sure the true difference between sysUpdater and SafeSysUpdater, but I think the latter is just a noob-friendly version of sysUpdater to prevent fuck-ups. I don't know if I should use the regular version or the safe one

You are correct about the method of downgrading. I suggest you use safesysupdater, but that's your choice. A chance of brick exists, and a NAND backup is recommended. However, most bricks are due to human error. Make sure you're using the correct downgrade files for O3DS and your region. In addition, you should delete Tubehax DNS if you use it so you can update to 10.5 in safe mode if you do softbrick.

Once you're on sysNAND 9.2, just follow the guide I linked to above.

Do you recommend that I download MenuHax to install SafeSysUpdater? I have IronHax and I was thinking of using that to install it, but it seems that people who use MenuHax to install the updater run into less problems down the road (or so I've heard).

I had better luck with menuhax, so yes, I would recommend it.
Also keep in mind that ironhax won't work on 9.2 because ironfall only works on 9.5+

So when I install MenuHax, should I install it for 9.9 (my FW) or for 9.2 (the firmware I will downgrade to)? Also, I am a bit confused: You say that I should have my sysNAND on FW 9.2 so that I can have "immortal entry points" and update my emuNAND to 10.5, right? But, If I update my emuNAND to 10.5, how will I be able to install CFW, I thought it is patched in 10.5?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Downgrading gives you access to emuNAND, which allows you to stay on a low sysNAND with immortal entry points while still being future-proof and getting all of the benefits of being on a higher system version.

When you create emuNAND, it will be the same firmware as your sysNAND. Install MenuHax on your sysNAND (which will be 9.2). You don't install CFW on emuNAND, your emuNAND launches through CFW. Basically, your sysNAND stays on 9.2 forever (hence immortal entry points) and you only update your emuNAND which won't patch CFW due to it being emuNAND.

Basically, you don't want to touch sysNAND once you have everything set up. Use MenuHax on sysNAND to boot into CFW, and have the hblauncher_loader.cia (https://gbatemp.net/threads/release...loader-for-cfw-users-cia-hbl-launcher.404151/) installed on your emuNAND so you can access homebrew on emuNAND without the need for another entrypoint.

So I should install MenuHax for 9.2 right? But If I install it for 9.2, how will I be able to open the sysUpdater file on my un-downgraded version?

Again, I plan on using MenuHax to install the sysUpdater. Should I install it for 9.9, and then format my sysNAND, and then re-install it for 9.2?
