Why did this get a 10/10? - #1: The Last of Us

2078fff.jpg

A common controversy among the gaming population is what specifically defines perfection, and can it be culminated in a simple score? What is the standard of perfection? What are the requirements to meet the basis of a good game, and how do you exceed that to be defined, perfect?

In this new little series that I’ve simply titled, Why’d this get a 10/10, I want to explore all of the thought that went into scoring certain games a, “perfect score.” I want to break down things by what I agree with, maybe things I disagree with, and ultimately, determine why the game was scored the way it was.

This is a game that I feel received a lot of genuine controversy for the perfect scores it received on its launch. Many people wrote it off as another post apocalypse style zombie game that wasn’t worth the time investment, or the interest in general. Hell, you may even have that very same thought running through your head seeing it be the topic of this write up. But I feel this game deserves to be talked about in a general and informative way to explore why people felt the way they felt about it. Which is why today’s focus is:

The Last of Us

LastofUs1010.jpg

Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us is a cinematic, post-apocalyptic story of two individuals journey to find hope in a dying world. This basic summary is typically the first stopping point for people when it came to this game. The familiar tropes of a tired and true zombie story left the curious gamer with a sour memory at first, one that left them un-interested and bored.

This mentality isn’t entirely unjustified either. Gamers desire new experiences for the most part, and when faced with familiarity they will typically welcome it or refuse it.

So in looking at what separates The Last of Us from your average zombie title, we need to set aside our thoughts on its genre and look more into what it is at heart. The Last of Us has been defined by critics at large as, “an experience.”

The praise and acclaim this title received came from where gamers didn’t expect to see it, which was in its ability to tell you its story. And what I believe happened is The Last of Us broke the tropes of your general game. I believe that gamers found more than a simple game in The Last of Us.

Let’s take a look at what former IGN writer Colin Moriarty has to say in regards to this title.

“The Last of Us seamlessly intertwines satisfying, choice-based gameplay with a stellar narrative. It never slows down, it never lets up, and frankly, it never disappoints. It’s PlayStation 3’s best exclusive, and the entire experience, from start to finish, is remarkable. I lost myself in Naughty Dog’s vision of a pandemic-ridden United States, in the characters that populate this unfortunate wasteland, and in their individual stories. The 17 hours I spent playing through the campaign are among the most memorable I’ve ever spent with a game.”

Notice that while lightly touching on gameplay, he raves about the experience more than anything else. We can see this exact consensus mirrored in reviews such as, Patrick Klepek’s GiantBomb review.

The Last of Us is not simply Uncharted with zombies, but it couldn't exist without Naughty Dog having made Uncharted first, either. It's a dark adventure, one rarely filled with laughs or joy. There are bitter pills to swallow along the way, and nothing is taken for granted, not even characters. People live, people die. Sometimes it's fair, sometimes it's not. It's still a zombie game, but a sobering one. Take a deep breath.”

Or even in Jim Sterling’s Destructoid review.

There is more to The Last of Us than just combat and "emotional" story tropes. To touch on its setpiece moments, to detail its beautiful changes in pace, would be to spoil too much. It cannot be said enough, however, that Naughty Dog's new best creation iscomplete, and when I say complete, I mean it to pay the highest of compliments. I do not want more from The Last of Us: I do not need more. As the last line was uttered and the credits ushered in the close, I was done. The Last of Us had achieved everything it needed to achieve in order to provide me with everything I wanted.

And it ended perfectly.

These critics speak of this game as if it was more than a game to them. In fact, The Last of Us to a lot of people was truly, an experience. The cinematic drama, raw emotion, characterization and wonderful dynamic the main character’s share is what truly creates the driving force of the game. For the most part, I feel gamers expect to be ready to leap into games headfirst with the story being the ancillary thought and the gameplay being king.

The-Last-of-Us-Joel-and-Ellie.jpg

This isn’t to say The Last of Us fails from a gameplay standard. Quite the contrary, the gameplay was quite the solid experience, though I do not 100% feel it is as perfect as critics praised it originally. I feel a lot of this was based on the occasional inability to perfectly focus fire or the twitchy and sometimes unreactive execution of stealth combat. However, for the time it was reviewed, these small critiques have little bearing on what makes The Last of Us so enticing.

What shocked people looking from the outside, into The Last of Us from a story perspective, is that you can’t feel the tension, the connection, the emotional dynamic that you share with these characters as you play them. No let’s play or 15-minute game demo can define what makes the game special. While you may see things you like in the demo, or things that may not interest you, the overall package of the game is combining itself with the ability to immerse you.

This was lost on anybody that hasn’t taken the time to sit down and truly explore the universe of The Last of Us.

When we pick this game apart piece by piece, we begin to realize these pieces in conjunction are what make the game so damn good. When we look at the cutscenes alone, we lost feeling of the gameplay. When we look at gameplay demos, we lose sight of the characters and story. When we play all of this in conjunction, what we are left with is what everyone has been talking about all along.

An experience. A culmination of what Naughty Dog does best, which is tell you a story while allowing you to have fun with that story. Allowing you to feel like you aren’t just playing a game, but are on a journey in graphically gorgeous universe. You are seeing these characters through an emotional rollercoaster ride that you are in control of.

The basis of a good game is, in my opinion, the ability to have you enjoy the game based on the what it is packaged with. Whether that be nothing but gameplay, nothing but story, or a combination, it does not matter. But when you can combine those things to make a good game, and set a standard that exceeds what you thought you wanted, you have created a great game, if not, a perfect game.

And that, my fellow gamers. Is why The Last of Us received a:

10/10

I hope you enjoyed my first try at a new article piece. I won’t commit to this being a weekly thing but I plan on making it recurring. But I would love to hear your thoughts on this piece of ways it can improve, if you agree or disagree, and what you would like to see next.

Ill be adding a poll for the next game I’ll cover, although I do already have plans for the next title I’d like to look at, so the poll will most likely be for the third game I plan on covering.

This was very experimental and I aim to improve it, so please forgive if there still is a lack of detail or a repetitive nature to it. I felt I did this particular game justice in my initial look, but I would not mind responding to feedback in any way to maybe give this another shot and improve it if it isn’t to your liking.

Thanks for reading guys, your support is everything!

You should try the "Left Behind" DLC. It's only about 2 hours long, but damn it, I though it was better than the campaign.

That game doesn't deserve 10/10 is a freaking tv series made a videogame, and I don't want videogames to become that, we are in this dedicated line where videogames are becoming interactive movies.

I'm actually replaying this at the moment on my PS3. Even though I know what's coming every time, the emotional moments still hit pretty hard because they're just perfectly executed, perfectly acted. The scenery is gorgeous (I dread to think how good the PS4 version looks), the gameplay is basic but solid, but the true strength is in its characters. Because of the incredible work from all the actors, the characters feel very believable and real. They react the way real people would. That elevates the whole thing from a simple run and gun game to a deep narrative with people you grow to care about. That was what made it worth a 10/10 in my opinion and why I keep coming back to the game, finding all the little details. ND did an amazing job on the game with so many little moments, little details and touches that make the whole world feel more real, all done with an amazing level of polish and care.

The re-release on PS4 didn't deserve a 10/10 with all the Micro transaction bullshit!
Micro transactions on a 60$ game should be fucking Illegal because you ALREADY
paid for the content. Any game with this practice should have at least 2 points
removed from it's score, for ruining the experience and double dipping is greedy
and dishonest.

Halo 5 I'm looking at you!

I wouldn't say it should be flat out illegal. I think it depends if there's a service involved, like servers for a multiplayer component. For those, sure, microtransactions for aesthetic crap I'm fine with. However, I see no reason to have them whatsoever in a singleplayer game.

I'm a fussy gamer. I only care about gameplay and replay value. I don't care for cutscenes or cinematic presentation, or even paying attention to the story.

The only thing that makes a video game enjoyable, for me, is addictive and intelligent gameplay mechanism, thoughtful puzzles and tactical strategy or fast and challenging action, competitive multiplayer is a huge bonus. I can tolerate cutscenes as long as I can skip them and the core gameplay meets my requirements above.
TLOU is not for me.

infamous 2 was pretty much a complete upgrade over the first
story, combat, bosses, powers, and better uses of the good/evil choices

the first was filled with repetitive missions and lackluster fighting (think of it like ac1, where as ac2 vastly improved almost everything in the game)

Last of Us was probably my favourite game of the PS3 lifespan, albeit it came near the end. For PS3 games I would give this 10/10, and I can see why others would do the same,

When comparing it to all games ever then the score would be less than 10 all though it would still be up there, I think people care too much about review scores and also don't take into account that this is a 10/10 relative to games of that generation and within the limits of the system it's played on,

I could give a game 10/10 for graphics/framerate/complexity on a console and a PC gamer would disagree and rate it a lot less because the capability of a PC would be far greater, but comparative to the hardware it was running on it is a 10/10

Just by going through the first page of responses, I think I can already understand just how this thread will evolve (or devolve) into yet another echo-chamber, as these things seem to do. That being said, I'm going to offer forth my opinion on the matter anyway.

I understand that this game is going to be re-released every console gen (before anyone takes it as a personal attack, this was a joke) but I don't know if I'd still consider this topic relevant. Both sides of the argument have had ample time to provide their opinions and, at least from what I've seen, the dust had already settled.

you have created a great game, if not, a perfect game.
I'm not going to say you're wrong for liking it, and I'm not going to say that you cannot consider this to be "the best game you've ever played". Those two statements are based entirely in opinion.
The word "perfect" is not an opinion. "Perfect" implies objective flawlessness.
I don't hate TLOU, but I'm going to go ahead and disagree that this game was perfect or even close.
The game obviously has problems. Without spoiling anything, the fact that this discussion even has to happen is a testament to that fact.

And that, my fellow gamers [...]
UGH

I thought you were trying to say The Last of Us didn't deserve the 10/10 and I hated you.
UGH

As we can see we once again have an example I pointed out in my write up. Someone that looked at this game without taking the time to experience it or even delve into it and thus, is ignorant of the game.
This is a poor way to deal with differing opinions. Especially if you're going to take the time to present yours in the form of an article for all to see and comment on.

Wouldn't say that its a 10/10 but i guess its a good game. Its too much repetitive thou, gets boring at the end. And that part where you're in the abandoned place where you co-op with the human eater, worst. part. ever.

I dont think you paid attention to what I was replying to. The dude didn't even know that Ellie was not Joel's daughter. That is what the final part of your quote was in response to. As for the rest of your response I don't really have anything to say other than to each his own.

Haha you like every Halo I hated! My favs where 1,2 and believe it or not 4, but I don't play online.
ME2 was a master piece, I fucking hate EA for buying Bioware just so they can suck all creativity out of it :(
Every Zelda has been amazing, except the spin offs, I don't have them on my list because I could never beat any as a kid :P
I should do that...

also FYI FF Cristal Chronicles stole monster tossing from Disgaea :P

chavosaur, you have me sadly disappointed here. I was enthralled by the title of the post, thinking that this might be a sort of anti-review of these "golden" games, and I had every hope of reading through, and reliving the problems I had with these "masterpieces" only to find out it's an opinion piece of aligned opinions. To each their own, I suppose, and I hope people enjoyed reading this, but I was sincerely hoping for something different.

As to what you have to say about the game, while I truly did enjoy the game, from beginning until almost the end, this game, like most (or not all), does not deserve it's exalted 10/10 status, as you even admit to its own shortcomings in your own original article, let alone the majority of posters here who mentioned problems and pitfalls they had with the game themselves. Even if we allow that the game had the "best story evar" (debatable), it still leaves improvements to be desired.

What if someone were to come along and create a Last of Us analog - a game in a similar vein, without its problems, with all the best parts of other games involved, with no complaints that they can find whatsoever - what score do we then apply to it? Part of a score is to be honest about the quality of a product, the other part is to show what can be improved and how to aspire to greater heights.

And considering the monotony, and systematic placement of these scores, every time I see a 10/10 score, it takes a lot of pressure for me to even try the game, let alone, give it any kind of credence as to its quality. These scores often seem or feel bought, and after the IGN scandal, I have no desire to be suckered into such trash, when I could spend my money on an indie game of true merit, where noone will suggest the game is a 10/10, but will invariably suck me in, showcasing the qualities of an individual not bound by the whip of the marketers, the chains of industry, and allowing an enterprising individual to create something truly unique.

Instead, the best that can be said for a lot of these games is that it didn't do the thing that the other game did that made the other game not the 10/10.
