Does this mean you can keep the flash-cart compatibility with higher (9.2 firmware)?
Yes.

There is already modified update package on that usual place. That's package is done for you so you don't have to worry about anything once flash the firmware. Google [MEGA] [CIA/BIN] MSET 4.X & 6.X backups, Browser backups, Update packs (All Regions)

I'm pretty 3ds savvy, If I'm going from 4.2 to 9.2 can I use the modified update packs from said google result, or should I use the clean ones?

EDIT: I loaned out my sky to my boyfriend with CN on it, so I need to keep mset. I know I can set it back up, but too lazy tbch. Hopefully no brick with the modified update packs

You don't use unknown firmware package from unknown Google results. Use the term I provide and search for that specific thread on that usual place.

It's your choice . If you want to use flash cart, pick the modified to save time later.

I'm not using anything unknown, on that 'special website' there are two options. A long list of unmodified fw files, and 3 modified fw files that seem to leave mset and ds whitelist alone.

I just updated from 4.2 to 9.2 using the modified update files and sys updater 3.0. For some reason, it only updated to 9.0, but that isn't a problem really. I was able to use my flashcart and MSET which were previously only compatible with 4.x firmware. Just make sure that you are in devmode (rxtools) or pasta when you use sysupdater. Otherwise, you risk bricking your 3DS.

Alright cool. Will I have to reinstall mset, or will the 4.2 version stay and work?

Erm... when i start 3dnus i type 9.5 into Title ID and EUR in the versions field....

3DNUS is only downloading the titlelist and then nothing happens.... I also tried using the titleID and Title Version from the csv-file but it only downloaded a 35KB File (wanted to download 9.5.0-23 EUR)...

sorry but how can i download the 9.5 update for my emunand? Did i miss a File or a step?

:EDit:

Got it - typing 9.5.0-23 into TitleID and EUR for the Version fixed it :D

Edit2:
Erm Download is now on title 0004001000022000 v8202 for about 1 hr - deleting tmp folder didn't helped - any other options?

3DNUS doesn't download older firmware anymore (Nintendo removed them from their server).

To get older firmware: Google "[MEGA] [CIA/BIN] MSET 4.X & 6.X backups, Browser backups, Update packs (All Regions)"

OK, I read all this postings and I just have 1 part i dont get.
I just got a new o3ds on 8.1.0-19u, i have a gateway and got it working fine on emunand gw8.1.0-19u

if im fine with using browser to launch gateway on sysnand 8.1 - can i just use devmen or fbi to install the 10.3 upgrade cia's to my emunand?
i have all of the 10.3.0-28u cia's from 3dnus

Launch into emunand and start System Settings. Make _SURE_ it says GW3D in the version number. Then just use System Update in the menu.

It'll update your Emunand and not your Sysnand. Make sure not to close System Settings between checking version and updating, or it'll punt you back to Sysnand.
