Free is all relative. You still have to invest some time to learn what it takes to do what needs to be done. Many people don't mind spending the time to read and ask question about the modding process, but there's no comprehensive guide that shows you all the odds and ends and pitfalls that you can potentially fall when you don't know what you're doing. And then there are others who wouldn't mind paying a little extra to get all of that done without all the hassle. In my opinion, this is no different from hiring a handyman to fix the plumbing in your house. You can do it yourself, but they've got the tools and the experience to do it faster. So the choice is yours; it makes perfect sense. It's the economy of things.
I agree wholeheartedly! If it takes you, say, eight hours to learn and overcome problems and eventually get it done, or it would take someone who knows what they're doing two hours, isn't it better to pay someone $80 to do it instead of trying to save that money doing it yourself, and "earning" $10/hr when you could otherwise be working at your actual job and earning say $30/hr? Sometimes it is smarter to spend money.

Hello there,

I have the possibilty to acquire a, what I understand as completely set up N3DS XL. According to the description it got sysNAND 9.0.0-20E, emuNAND 9.5, CFW with coldboot, bootmanager, MSET downgrade, MSET stuck, sysnand Backup and 64gb MicroSD.

Would I need to fetch ANYTHING else to unravel it's whole capabilities, like Gateway or sth.? Or would that leave me completely set up and future-proof (given I don't accidentally update sysNAND)

Downside, it's quite expensive. Wants approx. 100$ more than retail.

I have also the possibilty to get my hands on a 9.0.0-20U, it's cheaper but nothing is set up. Would I run into any problems with a US device in Europe or would region free patching enable me to play everything anyway?

Thanks for any help!

Advice? Sell it to me.

Hehe yeah, when I got mine I got back home at about 2-3pm or something, and it took me until well into the evening before I was finished setting everything up, and I already had prior knowledge of how stuff works.
For someone who knows less, would take much longer to get things working, have to ask a lot more questions, and possibly mess things up, when they could be working during that time and make more money from working than they spent on paying extra to get everything pre-hacked.

Granted mine was on 6.2, so I had the extra step of having to try and figure out updating via devmode and sysupdater, while with a 9.0 system I could just skip straight to booting via oot3dhax, but still.

i was so worried i would brick and if i knew someone who would have done the process for me i would have gladly paid a fee . . . so i completely agree

@wurstpistole In my "semi professional" opinion you should get the EU console so you don't run into any issues down the road, just system format it and format the microsd card in windows using sdformatter4 with format size adjust on and full erase. Then make a fresh Nand backup. This way you won't have any issues with the eShop or your NNID if you have one.

Two copies of Cubic Ninja of each region? Well that's a hassle I don't wanna take. Makes sense that he charges more or less the standard price of the console and not more like all the EU versions.
I'll go out tomorrow to check local stores for 9.0-9.2 devices with the serial number list, I know that's rather unlikely after such a long time... but somehow I just don't want to pay that much for a N3DS XL - with selling my current N3DS I'd have to put about 150€ on top, which basically is another N3DS.

I'm sure I could handle the installation myself, I set up my JTAG 360, Wii HBC, PSP CFW by myself just with the help of tutorials, I think 3DS would not be that much of a problem after getting into the topic. But that'd mean get hands on a 9.2EU device for a price I'm willing to pay.

You don't need Cubic Ninja anymore, You can use Homenuhax and Mini Pasta.

You got a lot of responses but I'll throw mine in. Get the US 9.0 one since it's so cheap. You can change the region of the emuNAND and even start it from a coldboot using themehax. Not to mention, I actually think it's really fun hacking it yourself because it's really not difficult (and it's safe) and requires no extra materials. The feeling you get when it all works out is pretty nifty. The CFW you want is RxTools.

Edit after reading more of the thread: I want to elaborate, you will not need anything else other than a 9.0-9.2 n3DS and an SD card. No Cubic Ninja or anything else.

Oh okay, then the tut I found was outdated. It cleary stated you would need Cubic Ninja for that and there's no other way.
So maybe changing the US one to EU would be a good option after all. Can I play online with that? I understand that eshop probably won't work but I don't really care.

Online should be no issue though getting updates might be a slight problem you will need to install the NVER and TIGER CIA's to your Emunand to access the eShop since the highest you can go on a N3DS is 9.5.0-23E.

That I don't understand. Aren't there games already that require a higher version than 9.5? Or is that kind of minimum firmware absolutely obsolete on CFW?
From my very limited knowledge about the topic now, I thought emuNAND would just get updated by going into system and updating the thing over Wifi while running on emuNAND. Is that not the case? How do I update it then?

The New 3DS Emunand cannot be updated past 9.5.0-23 but Old 3DS can go to any firmware this is not an issue since we can download crypto fixed CIA's or just firmware spoof to let the game run. To Update Emunand you need to use Sysupdater with firmlaunch off.

Thanks for that information. Quite difficult to grasp at the moment but maybe once I get my hands on one I will fully understand.

Yeah before you could spoof with a simple CIA but Nintendo patched eShop and NNID not even I understand how to get on now.

Eshop is not the most important part. I just want to safely run any game without running into any problems on the way. If there was no AP I could just get a sky but you know how it is. That's why I'm playing with the thought of cfw.

The reason people want eShop is to get updates for games to play online for example the pokemon games but if you use a bad CIA update you may receive the banned error message (you don't actually get banned) and the other problem is deleting the update and trying to install a real one to get online will give you an error.
