Trying to do as much research as possible but getting a little overwhelmed. Have some questions.

If I install a CFW using this guide: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-how-to-install-a-cfw-on-a-9-0-9-2-n3ds-without-cn-oot.398394/
so I can install .CIAs, does that mean that I could potentially play any game, without buying a Gateway? Are there any situations this wouldn't work for?

Is there ANY advantage to this method?: https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutoria...to-new3ds-fw-ver-9-2-with-ninjhax-1-x.397794/
Doesn't seem like there is one apart from the easy to undo-ness.

On a N3DS XL v9.2, which is better to use: CakesCFW or RXtools? Why?

To play games that require later firmware than the 9.5 emunand, what are the workarounds? Like, if Monster Hunter X requires v10.0.1+, how can I play that?

Thanks

Hoping someone here can help me out.

Got a n3DS with Version 9.0.0-20E installed. DS MSET Profile installed, using the gateway card.

Goal: I want to be able to play US cartridges on my European console. However, I do not have Cubic Ninja or Ocarina of Time.

I don't have Cubic Ninja, so I can't do anything that will erase the Cubic Ninja hack either

Finally decided to switch from GW and try the CFW. Followed the tutorial here but somehow I have ended up with an rxTools install that has no CIA manager.

Thought maybe from rxTools I could launch HBL, FBI, install FBI.. but it gives me an error "SUMMARY_INVALID_ARGUMENT" trying to install CIAs now.

I unlinked the sysnand and emunand btw... Thanks in advance for any ideas! :)

so is it possible to get the homebrew launcher on 8.1j? i looked at like tubehax, ironhax, etc but it seems you need 9.0+? what are my options if any. Some of the emulators support cia to work with gw? and work okay but others don't..

Either launch Gateway Emunand & install a title manager with the .3ds version, or if you don't have access to your Gateway anymore, you'll need to install a title manager to your Sysnand via Ninjhax, then recreate your emunand to get it to transfer. (you'll lose everything installed on your Emunand along with its Friend code NNID ect.)

You need to play in Classic Mode if you want to use a retail cartridge you own. Launch GW Menu by pressing L while booting and choose Classic Mode instead of GW Mode.

And yes, you can dump your own retail cartridge using yet another option in GW Menu. It will also have your own private header since it comes from a retail cartridge you own.

From the questions you're asking, it seems you never really read many guides before, especially the one from GW. If so, it's also likely you might not be using emunand or have made a NAND backup before.
If that is the case, you should inform yourself about it and do it since it's important. ;)
Thanks. Since I have MSET installed, the 3DS just boots straight into emuNAND so I never got a chance to look at the Gateway menu in detail.
Playing around today, and I did see the 'Backup Game Option' that you mentioned.

Never understood the purpose of Classic mode until now, thanks. I'll be sure to read up on the documentation next time

With the first link you posted, it uses ninjhax 2.x, and the latter ninjhax 1.x, to be honest, there isn't much difference between the two except that with the first link, the CFW used are technically unofficial builds that supports the ninjhax 2.x method. it's like a patchjob Not buggy or anything. Just there While waiting for official support.

As of now, Cakes is fully compatible with N3DS, although rxtools is still compatible too, it DOES use nightlies, and honestly I still haven't been able to set it up completely seeing as nightlies are just that, constantly updated. I have an N3DS on 9.2 and I use Cakes to replace my GW emunand. Also, for future games, most CFW supports what's known as firmlaunch which is basically a firmware spoofer since there are already games that require 9.4 to run which have been patched to do so so don't worry about it too much.

Hoping someone here can help me out.

If you want a hassle free method, you can try the homebrew method. RegionFour supports out of region cartridges and better yet, it's already in the starter pack.

Go straight to the latest. If it's a legit .cia, just use freemultipatcher to enable eshop access and update it from your 3ds. if it's not legit, then you need to find and download the corresponding .cia. A simple search for the 3DS International Standard of Organization should point you to where you need to go.

If you're on emunand, you should be able to run any cia from any region but I personally just choose one and stick to it so I don't lose track of what region which .cia is, which streamlines the process of finding updates for each. No it doesn't imply that you must use a cartridge. Just a regular .cia install will do.

Also just so you know when it comes to legit .cia you can only use the one from your region.

You can use emulators in CIA format. Not all but there's several available. Check the thread here about Retroarch nightlies.

Get either an old Pasta CFW version or rxTools and set it up in your 2DS.
Then get an app called sysupdater and the 9.0 firmware files in CIA format (you can find it in that "ISO" website for the "3DS").
And then if you use rxTools, boot it in devmode and use sysupdater to update to firmware 9.0.

Thanks, worked well; )

I haven't been following the CFW scene all to well so I got couple of questions.

What is rxtools exactly? If I run Pasta CFW on my 2DS should I update? and what are the differences?

Just read that there is a new method to boot into emunand without using the mset 4.x , I want the new 3ds method . Hopefully not risky and not like a trail and error thing like the profile exploit .

I had to start from the beginning, but everything is great now. Thanks!

One more thing... I hear that rxtools supports updating the emunand, but a lot of the info around seems outdated.. up to which nand is safe to update and how is the update best done?
