Seems like a bit of extra work when you can just block the URL on most routers. Even if a router doesn't support that, you can usually flash it with DD-WRT or Tomato.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Figured it out. Lost power to my modem/router the other day and gave me a new IP when it powered up so wasn't going through opendns any more. Strange that Wii u was still able to route through to internet with DNS entries....bummer :-(

I have just had to upgrade my router, so now I'm skeptical to even try and redo the Wifi/OpenDNS settings on the WiiU in case it automatically tries to update to 5.4.0

Thoughts?

I blocked these servers, but any time I try to start a game it says "A system update is required before the software update can be downloaded. Start the system update now?" Pressing update takes it to settings, and pressing cancel does start the game. No matter what game I start, it doesn't work. Any help?

If a game have an update available online, it will always tells you to update.
To update a game, you have to connect without OpenDNS, directly to Nintendo's severs.

Maybe updating a game and not directly the Wii U system will work but I'm not sure.

Could I just connect to someone elses DNS address if I dont feel like setting it up myself? As long as they have it set up correctly I should have updates blocked and connect online with games right?

I don't know many people that casually run DNS servers. Do you mean using OpenDNS but using someone else's settings for their IP? No, you can't do that without adding your IP to their account, and having more than one IP registered costs money. Anyway, you'd still have to change your DNS settings. You'd only be cutting out one step.

ohh, I didnt intend on inconveniencing someone else for my benefit. I just thought I could simply use their address and I'm good to go. Shows what I know.

I'll continue to read on this and do my best to block it myself, is there any homebrew at all on 5.5 firmware whether its public or not? Thats what I'm on.

I don't know, I don't really pay attention to Wii U homebrew myself. You could also just use your router to block the URLs mentioned on this thread. If you want to do that and don't know how, Google is your friend there.

I read the front page of this topic and I don't fully understand the point of this application. If you need to be on the latest update in order to play Wii U games online then why block in the first place, isn't the point to be on a lower firmware while still being able to play online?

correct me if I'm wrong.

the point is not to be able to play online, but to be able to keep old version of the system to keep homebrew and exploit possible.
By doing so, you lose the online access (eshop, update, online play capability, etc.)
It's a choice : homebrew and hacking OR online services, not both.

Though, keep in mind that keeping a hacking capable console could lead to online access (spoofing the update, redirected NAND, etc.) and you could end with both at some time in the future.
while updating definitely close hacking possibilities.

Hacking is currently done through the internet browser, so you need online access. but if you enable online without blocking nintendo's servers the console will auto-update.
using OpenDNS or a proxy or a router's setting to block only specific servers grant you online access without fearing that the console auto-update.

It's to prevent auto-updating while still having some internet access. You'd need a spoofer if you're on a lower firmware and want to access the eShop or play online.

Thank you Cyan and TecXero, I kinda enjoy Splatoon a bit too much for me to give it up for homebrew. I'll just wait until there's a solution for both online and homebrew, however long that may take.

Just to warn you, there may never be a solution on later firmware. Sometimes other vulnerabilities just aren't found. Take a look at the PS3. That said, I don't really think Wii U homebrew is really worth it beyond being able to dump your own games. It's easy to also have a HTPC setup alongside it as well. It's not like a handheld where you have a finite amount of pocket/bag space.

I'm hoping region free will be possible someday, I have two Wii U games in mind I would like to import and it would be a shame if I can never play them. The only other thing I would ask for is a cheat manager but thats already taking off greatly in its current state. Other than that theres not much else I want out of homebrew, I'm not in it for piracy as I own every Wii U game I ever want.

Sorry for the slightly off topic question, but I'm having an issue. I blocked all the urls within my router and even though the Wii U is connected to my router, I can't access anything on the internet so I can't launch the exploit. When you block the Nintendo urls, does it prevent you from accessing anything on the internet unless Nintendo handshakes the online sign in?
