MGS V for PC comes with empty DVD disc

If you bought the newest iteration of the Metal Gear Solid series to play on your computer, you might have been surprised to notice that the DVD disc that was in the box did not actually contain any game files. All it contains is an installation binary for Steam, allowing you to download the game in full from the Internet (~30 GB).

What do you think about this? Should the game have been sold as Blu-ray? Or perhaps multiple DVDs?

This defeats the purpose of a physical release, especially on PC. People who get PC games on-disc in this day and age mostly do so because of bandwidth limitations, data caps or overall slow and unreliable internet service, there's no reason for them not to get games via Steam or Origin otherwise, maybe with the rare exception of limited editions, and even then it's just for the physical collectibles. What exactly is the benefit of getting this game on-disc when in the end you have to download it via Steam anyways? The box? Konami could've saved themselves a lot of money by just putting Steam vouchers in all the boxes - they would't have to press useless discs. They would save even more by not releasing it physically at all - at least they wouldn't look stupid now.

I hope they plan on keeping the server online for a long time, unless they stipulate on the box some form of expiry date.

I also wonder if they will make it easy to transfer the game to a new pc for someone who upgrades years down the track and the server is down.

This is not going to go down well and i doubt we'll see much more of this.

Where can you even buy a retail copy on PC? I've searched Best Buy and GameStop and I cant find it. Is it not available in the US?

This actually happened to me on Call of Duty: modern warfare 2, they made you download and install it from steam and was on a DVD. I really dont think its all that bad, at the time I hated steam but its actually not that bad, gives you the power to re-install on any computer without having to carry around the disc. Plus ya gotta love those steam sales.

But I can see how this can annoy some people, this would be like if you bought a movie on dvd or bluray and included a code to download it from amazon, itunes or whatever but did not included the physical disc.

They keep doing this and i really feel for people with slow connections or worse, people with no connection. I think it was Arkham knight that also did this and i read countless amazon reviews giving it 1 star because of them having to download what they thought should be a physical copy of the game. (Then to find out the game was a broken mess must of been the icing on the cake of fustration)

Is having the game on multipal discs really so bad tho? Also Im not sure how big this game is or how many discs is needed but unless the box actually says that its to download the game, isnt this fraud or something can be taken up against them? If its on the box then fair play but if its not, surely thats illegal because you are misleading customers. Right?

I have updated the news thread since it wasn't a Blu-ray after all
it makes a little more sense then, I suppose
game wouldn't fit on a DVD, they would have had to include several DVDs or make it a blu ray but then not everyone has bluray players
GTAV did it anyway.

Considering most PC retail games are just boxes with a DVD that needs to be linked to Steam anyway to work I really don't see the problem here.
Sure it sucks for those who have slow connection but if you have slow connection and are a PC gamer you should be used to it.

Konami never actually cared about pc so this is not surprising.
That sucks. But does no one else remember Blizzard did it first with heart of the swarm?
that's not exactly the same... the problem with HotS was it was sent gold way too early in the development process. the game that actually came out was so different from what was on the disc that the disc did not matter anymore.

This is stupid, if people wanted to download the game they would just buy it on steam or wherever. They wouldn't bother buying a case to receive a binary code.
Konami might as well sell an empty DVD case with a download code.
Also DVD installs faster, especially if your installing around 30GB.

I don't see what the big deal is. :ha:
Oh cool, this post. Lets circle jerk about our speeds and not realize that most countries such as the United States have one of the slowest internet speeds. It is getting better, at least with a study done last year by Akamai shows that the United States has an average of 11Mb/s. Aside from that, you have countries such as Australia and Chile who average roughly 4.5Mb/s.

The point is: Not everyone in every country has the availability to have fast speeds.
