Ok, lets look at the ps3. I have loaded PS2 backups with multiman on my slim. I'm sure that not all ps2 backups will work, but the 6 or 7 games that I did try worked fine. The 3DS scene needs to progress, cfw is still kind of new. The method that Nintendo uses to launch a gamecube and wii titles on the 3DS needs to be more thoroughly examined. Don't say that it isn't possible because somebody will prove you wrong.
The PS3 firmware has embedded PS2, PS1 and PSP emulators.
When you run your backups through it the manager simply calls those emulators and gave them the backup location so it can load them.
While the PS3 itself doesn't have all the hardware that those older systems used, it's hardware is powerful enough and Sony engineers know how to program a emulator with the proper speedhacks to achieve playable end results (it's in no way a proper 1:1 emulation, they use lots of tricks to achieve similar results with less resource).
Nintendo doesn't launch/emulate Wii or GC games on 3DS, you can run games with similar graphics and physics through porting* the games. If you bring good artists along you can redo the graphical assets to be better looking on 3DS small screens and resolutions.

* To port a game is to get their original source code, optimize it to the new target system and then recompile and sell this. It's completely different and unrelated to emulation.

You want in on this too, who you talking about? These two above you keep going on about emulation even thought I already stated that a homebrew emulator would more than likely never work.

you said that and right after, you talk about having to wait for nintendo to release gc games first and the cfw scene not being advanced enough to know what happens. which doesnt make sense and makes it sound like you think there's still a way once nintendo does it. but they cant do that. since the only way to have non 3ds games on 3ds is through emulation or porting. emulation doesnt more than likely not work, its literally impossible. no chance whatsoever.
and ports, ports of everything work, you could even port dark souls 2 to the nes (with huge but necessary downgrades in graphics and game mechanics of course), but a port does not allow anyone to play any other game that isn't also ported, there is no injecting into ports. and porting is expensive and takes lots of time and manpower. industrial level manpower and time, dozens of people working for months and more, costing tens of thousands of dollars or more

Only because you keep suggesting that ports can do the same thing emulators can. Which they cannot. A ported game is an entirely new game, it just looks like the game it is ported from. Porting a game is not something you can do with a click of a button.

I know what a port is and what emulation is, sorry if I gave the wrong impression. Maybe I'm just as blind as the op, but do believe that nobody knows for sure what the future holds. My answer to the op is that you cannot currently play those games on your 3DS, and "probably" never will.

No. You never will. PS1 alone is a crapshoot but the other two are not happening.

Hey, that was uncalled for.

I could see the 3DS running a PS1 emulator someday, at about 10% speed with no sound and lots of game-specific speed hacks. As for the others, it *could* be possible to make an emulator, the same way you can probably run Crysis on a 2004 laptop. That is, could happen as a proof of concept, but not load games, or maybe load one specific game and have the 3DS catch fire 2 seconds later. But the fact is, it's highly unlikely someone would do it, since it would be useless and just a neat thing to do for the hell of it.

Emulators aren't necessarily homebrew. For example, Virtual Console games use emulators created by Nintendo themselves. The PS3 uses a PS1 and PS2 emulator created by Sony themselves. They're still emulators. It's irrelevent whether or not they are homebrew.

I thought I read that the 3ds was capable of having gamecube games ported to it. Will nintendo ever do it?
I'm sure they could port gamecube games to the N3DS if they wanted to as xenoblade chronicles 3d is a thing which is a Wii game, and it runs fine and is generally a nice port.

1. The 3DS isn't as strong as the PSP to emulate PSP games on it.
2. Same as # 1. I am hoping for a miracle if RetroArch does manage to be sucessfully ported to the 3DS though.
3. God, I wish. Playing Melee on the 3DS would be incredible.

for one, to emulate a system, your system needs to be several times as strong as the original hardware (OR be comprised of most of the actual systems components, thats how ps1 emulation works on the psp, it actually only needs to emulate a few parts of the original ps1, the rest is actually in there), so being as strong as psp would still not be enough to make that work.
as for retroarch, seriously? have you seen the crappy piece of work they put out for the psp? they're spread their bases so thin, they barely get anything done right and ever since after the wii, they seem to be relying on a systems power to make their stuff run well.
like yeah, a ps3 runs retroarch fine, but it would also run every other ported emulator just fine, cause it has the power to compensate for bad programming and optimizing...

I feel that such critisism of Retroarch is unfair. The emulator is only going to perform as well as the cores it utilises. The objective isn't really to tailor to specific formats but to offer a platform so that the most suitable core can be utilised depending on the target system. They actually do attempt to optimise the cores when the base core is inefficient, such as Snes9x Next, VBA Next, bsnes mercury etc.

Retroarch rules pretty hard once you have the base system going. You can then throw yourself on a core and do work on it instead of worrying about building a new frontend from scratch and all.

They put out a crappy piece of work for the PSP because there isn't a REASON to try too hard on the PSP. Everything's pretty much done in other homebrew.

Buy a PSP/Vita for PS1/PSP emulation. That is what i did. Also new, native vita Snes and Mega drive emulators are very promising. Vita will more than possibly have full speed SNES/GBA emulation.

My new 3DS is very useful for GB/GBC/NES/GBA emulation/VC injecting and playing DS/3DS games.

Unfortunately there is no one perfect device for all jobs.
