I am about to mod a yet unmodded Wii (GC-compatible) which is on firmware 4.2E. Would you recommend that I update it first to 4.3E before modding it with ModMii? The intended use is playing backups of different regions from USB while retaining the ability to purchase and redownload purchased stuff from the online store.

Just use ModMii and select the 4.3E upgrade when going through the options. ModMii will take care of the update for you.

it's even recommended to go to 4.1
it contains less anti-softmod checks.

4.2 and 4.3 don't add features, only piracy checks.

Note:
Modmii heavily rely on googlecode repository to download all needed files.
Googlecode is now in read-only and will close in 2016. I don't know if someone will update all the URLs to use new places (github or sourceforge, or anything else)
if not, that tool will stop being functional in 2016.

Just so I understand, you state that the current recommended option to select as "New System Menu you would like to upgrade/downgrade to" for a Wii with either 4.2 or 4.3 is 4.1, even though the wizard actually recommends to stay in the same version the Wii currently has, right?

Does anything other than 4.3 have any drawback? Like not being able to purchase from the online store or some games requiring to upgrade to a later version?

the system menu version doesn't affect eshop purchases or game compatibility.
The system menu is a standalone application used to list and launch titles. 4.2 and 4.3 contains region free checks and patch the banner bomb vulnerability.
4.1 is the last menu to add features.
4.2 adds region free checks (modchips can't run other region games anymore if launched from disc channels, but no effect if launched from an USBLoader)
4.3 patches banner bomb, and you need to use mailbomb instead in case you delete HBC.

either of the 3 versions are "fine" to install. they are doing the exact same thing and have access to the same features or game compatibility.
you can stay at 4.2 if you want, the only issue would be if you want to launch out of region burned gamed with modchip. I don't know if it affects out of region channels too, but I suppose priiloader patches the channel's region check?

Crystal clear now. Thanks!

It'd be nice if the tool allowed to create a portable version of itself and everything it might choose to download, i.e. a "download all" option and be able to run from the offline stuff instead of having to fetch it from online sources. Sure some of the stuff it downloads might eventually get updates that you would otherwise not get, but you could at least archive the portable version and therefore retain a version that remained useful even when online sources become unavailable.

Not that I have the skills to implement that change, so just an idea.

Please check out this post and this one, both from XFlak (OP) in this same thread. If still functional, it could serve the same purpose.

so for some reason I can't even get ModMii to install at all. basically it just crashes the installer after a while and an error comes up that says "cannot find 'modmii.exe". Make sure you typed the name correctly and then try again."
if I tick off the "start ModMii after installation" option, it just crashes to desktop. no error message, no nothin. not... entirely too sure what could be causing this?

if after the install, modmii.exe crashes, you should have a folder named Support.
if the install doesn't work at all, you should be able to download a zipped version of modmii instead of the installer.

inside the Support folder you can launch modmii.bat and this one works.

I had the same issue recently on Windows XP.
Now on win7 modmii.exe works again. but you can launch the bat instead of exe if you want.

Hello!!
I have a few questions, please help me.
My Wii has modified custom Waninkoko BIOS 4.3E, also Homebrew Channel was installed, USB-Loader too. Also it has a chip WiiKey.
I want to update programs and downgrade bios to 4.1E) with ModMii.
I wonder at stage in ModMii. What I have to choose when Modmii asked me? Is this your first time softmodding Wii? Do I have to choose, Yes or NO?
Do I need to enter Wii's MAC Address?

Can I downgrade Waninkoko 4.3E to 4.1 with ModMii?

Thanks for help.

if you already have the Homebrew Channel, you can tell it's not the first time.
if it's the first time, it will generate a guide and files used to hack the console using a Game or message hack with Wii MAC Address.

having HBC is easier, you just launch everything from your existing HBC.

but it's fine to tell it's a first time, it's just a different method to launch homebrew.
You can downgrade (it's just an overwrite) the 4.3E with 4.1E, tell modmii that you want 4.1E and it will use that version of the system menu application.

It's not a bios or a firmware, it's only a program with a different version.
what you do is replace the program from version 4.3E to 4.1E

be sure to follow all the Modmii generated guide to properly install all the files to your console.

Hey, so...I'm completely lost on this. :(

I have a launch Wii, the white one. I hacked it back in 2008 using Twilight Hack to put some N64 games on there so I didn't need my N64 hooked up. Of course with the updates, I had to remove them all. Now I'm on 4.3U and trying to get UNEEK/SNEEK and the rest to work...but I can't use NANDs.

I have a 2GB SD card. I also bought a 32GB SDHC card. And I have a 32GB USB 3.0 thumb drive.
I used Smash Stack to hack it, added BootMii, added HBC, added Postloader, added priibooter, added USB-Loader, and added NEEK2.0.
Installed/patched all of the IOS versions, turned off updates, made it region-free.
Used the guide to create SNEEK on my SDHC card with all of the VC Arcade games pre-loaded, tried to run it from NEEK2.0...and it freezes at "Reloading to bootmii IOS." I tried rebooting it and recreating the whole SNEEK architecture using ModMii, but it didn't do anything. Still freezes.
Then I tried with the USB drive, reformatted it and set the main FAT32 partition to MBR, 32kb cluster size. Tried using UNEEK on that one, and it still freezes at the same screen.
I tried the same thing using just my SD card. It made something called "nands.bin" which was ~500MB in size on root, but it wouldn't load to it so I don't know if I ran out of space before it fully wrote or what. That's why I'm looking for bigger storage.
Also tried loading my USB with Postloader on my SD card, changing the UNEEK nand to the one with the VC Arcade games on it in the Config menu, and doing it that way. It moved the ticket and title folders to root, but it didn't load.

EDIT to add: I've also used the Postloader NEEK menu in the Options section to try and change it, but it always goes to black screen that way. On all formats.

I was able to install all of the WiiWare/VC games onto my Wii using MMM, then painstakingly moving them to my SDHC card. BUT I didn't realize that you can only display 300 channels (20 pages of 15). So, now what I want to do is make separate NANDs for all of the games, sorted by system--one for Arcade, one for NES, one for WiiWare, etc., with their gamesaves going to their respective nands, to make it all neat and clean. But it's turning out to be really complicated. I don't know where I'm going wrong. Someone help! :(

Are you absolutely sure that Bootmii is installed as boot2 and as IOS? Re-run the Hackmii Installer and make sure to install it in both boot2 and in IOS. Because you have a launch Wii, you might not have selected the second option.

Oh wow...thank you! Reinstalled all three programs in HackMii and it worked. Argh!

Now, is there a channel that lets me see all of my nands and choose which one I want to load? lol

if it can't download the zip, download neek2o files from here :
https://code.google.com/p/custom-di/downloads/list
get r96 and put it in /temp/neek2o/ folder in your modmii install dir.

if it's 0000000e.app or 0000000e_IOS80.app, it can be downloaded with NUSD.
place it in /temp/

if it's the installer, you can find it here :
https://code.google.com/p/sneek/downloads/detail?name=SNEEKInstallerv0.7a-cred.rar
extract content to temp/SNEEKInstallerv0.7a-cred/

I don't know if it will be enough. you didn't tell which files was missing, I tried to list what I can.

Ok. The spanish version of modmii is not updated. I install it and it update to the v6.0.7, but no more....
I install the english version 6.3.1 from code.google and it update automatically to 6.3.6.
I retry downloading and no problem now.:grog:
