I mean, would you get the same experience with a WiiU 8GB + a good quality SSD, as you would with a WiiU 32GB?

The USB 2.0 controller will cut your HDDs speed anyway.
Even when I think its nonsense not to buy a 32GB directly, it wont be a huge difference between 8GB+HDD/SDD/USB/whatever and 32GB.

Well, if you buy the premium bundle with Mario Kart 8 you are approximately at the price for a 8GB Wii U with MK8 bought seperatly. But as I said there shouldn't be any problem with a 8GB + HDD.

The Wii U 8GB + a cheap USB stick = Wii U 32GB - one USB port.
The performance is not so different.
The internal memory is not that fast anyway.
If you use an external HDD or SSD you have to consider two USB ports gone (for the Y-cable), but you need the extra space.
I don't recommend using an SSD, it is not justified, just plug a cheap massive storage device, either an HDD or a cheap 64GB+ USB stick.
Anyway 32GB is not enough, just install a couple of games and you're out of space, specially if you use digital downloads, eshop Wii games or if you plan to play Xenoblade X and store the cache data.

SSD is a bit overkill for the Wii U, as it has other bottlenecks that prevent it from taking advantage of it. I'd just get an USB HDD with its own power supply.

The only reason I want to buy a 8GB would be for the price.

Its a good reason, I was personally thinking the same and concluded the 32gb is a waste of money.

Both 8gb and 32gb are useless for any real storage I think, you are better getting the 8gb and putting the money you save towards some proper storage e.g 64/128gb usb drives are cheap now, or even a 500gb usb hard drive can be purchased for £30ish.

You can currently get an 8gb Wii U and a choice of:
  • Super Smash Bros Wii U
  • New Super Mario Bros Wii U
  • Mario Party 10
  • Captain Toad
  • Mario Kart 8
For £160 with free delivery, see here: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/wii...r-mario-smash-bros-mario-kart-8-mario-2242430

That what i've purchased and have just had a text saying its been delivered this morning.

Hmm. I'm not gonna be downloading any eShop versions or Wii re-releases. Might be buying eShop exclusives and VCs though.

I don't think the 8GB is worth it, as with the 32GB you get Nintendoland included which is a game everyone should have anyway, great party game. As well as a few other extras that are useful but not worth that much. And I know there are bundles where you get 32GB with Nintendoland + another game, that are even more worth it.
If you buy physical releases where possible, 32GB should be enough for eShop exclusive games, 8GB is almost nothing though, it would fill up with a few of the bigger eShop exclusives along with update data. To me it's a hassle to have one USB HDD for vWii stuff and another for Wii U stuff. So I couldn't imagine only having 8GB of storage, even 32GB is a bit too small because I bought WWHD and Splatoon on the eShop, but it's the difference between being able to fit WWHD or Splatoon on there along with a bunch of eShop exclusives, or not being able to fit either WWHD or Splatoon, and less eShop exclusives.

Hmm. I'm not gonna be downloading any eShop versions or Wii re-releases. Might be buying eShop exclusives and VCs though.
Then it sounds like the 32 GB model is perfect, you won't need any more for eShop exclusives and VC, and you won't have to deal with using a Y-cable or a big externally powered HDD that's permanently plugged into your Wii U.

Previously, the main advantage to the 32gb version was that digital rebate promotion. With that gone, and prices of USB sticks getting cheaper, there isn't a real advantage to the 32gb version anymore.

I have the 8gb version (bought for cheap about 6 months after the Wii U came out) with a 1tb hdd. I don't buy a lot of digital games, but have a few thanks to Club Nintendo (R.I.P.)

I have the 32gb version with a 128GB Flash Drive as extra storage. Dont have to worry about usb power issues that way. A game on system memory loads close to the usb flash drive speed.

Wii U System OS + (Super Smash + savefile + updates) + (CoD Ghost + savefile + updates) + (MK8 + savefile + updates) + (Hyrule Warriors + savefile + updates) + Wii Party U + Thrines 2 DC = my 32Gb WiiU almost full.

I have a 8GB Wii U. Got it because it's the only way to get a white console and I'm TIRED of dark devices. With that said I have two hard drives, one for vWii and one for Wii U. They both have external power lines and the two of them only take up two ports, this leaves one port open for my GameCube adapter and the other for accessories (Skylanders and Disney Infinity portals). I think the 8GB model is just fine, just add an external HDD.

I would've gotten the White Wii U but Nintendo uses some cheap non-premium white cases so when comparing Wii U to PS4's and XO's whiteness it's clearly inferior. Shame.

I don't bother with white game consoles as I have no idea if they will yellow over time. I keep my stuff away from windows even having windows that block most UV. Still, I do not want to take the chance.

I think I've decided to get a 32GB one, as all my games will be physical where possible. Thanks for all the responses. All I need now is to find it cheap, and in good condition (or actually spend a bit of money).

Some of those updates and DLC can easily take that up. Especially if you have an interest in Indie games that tend to show up on Wii U as digital only. I'd still recommend grabbing a cheap HDD or something.
