Crackdown 3 to utilize Cloud Computing - 17 Minutes of Gameplay

IGN sat down with David Jones, creative director on Crackdown 3, to show off some of the amazing new destruction technology to be featured in game. In a demo, Jones showed Ars an overlay of just how much power the game was taking from servers in the cloud, saying that the team has in the past been able to draw as much as 13 times the power of a single Xbox One to power the Crackdown 3 simulation. The idea is that the player should be able to destroy literally anything, with every piece of glass, concrete and metal behaving just as it would in an absurd reality, crashing through other buildings, twisting down to the street and even leaving all of its debris around the for the entirety of a game.

This sounds like a really great idea. I hope that the price of maintaining all those servers isn't an issue for them though

I wonder how the game will play in the future when the servers are shut down. Will it go the way of MMORPGS where the game is next to worthless or will the technology in the future mean that Crackdown 3 can be played on a console with the power of all those servers running?

The amount of destruction on offer there will only be made available in online multiplayer modes: the weapons are extremely OTT for it (being able to level the entire city in seconds wouldn't really make for a great campaign mode).

Are they still going on with the Cloud "DRM" Computing thing? I had hoped the Sim City disaster would have been enough to shut everyone else up about this bullshit.

Company servers can't handle the actual players in a multiplayer game as it is now. Now the servers are going to be doing all this too?

Game releases, company: "as it turns out, when we have more then 10 players online at once, our servers can't handle it. we thought we tested it all out before hand, but we just weren't prepared for this number of players"

The Xbox one may not be all THAT powerful compared to modern PCs, but 13 times it is still quite a lot. Add to that the amount of people that may be playing the game, especially on launch, and it just leaves me wonder what the hell kind of servers they plan on using to handle that.

players should unite and demand companies to release server related files as open source
or at least make some kind of law that forces the companies to give instructions and files to setup a (homemade) server after they shutdown services for products we own...

of course we can't fight against technology improvements, everyday more services are launched that require internet\servers to run... but we could shape it...
look at the wii or DS.. they shut down the online stuff and we have to play the "guessing" game to make homemade servers.... nintendo could be nice and give us files to make a server... it would keep stuff alive...

..

You buy the rights to play the game, that's it. When they shut down the server, sucks. It likely wont even be until the end of the xbox one, if that. They can gradually scale back servers as the playerbase drops, so it's not a big deal.
Frankly by the time they do shut down, it probably wont matter to anyone. If they release it on PC, it'll live on through that.

tl;dr, by the time it's an issue, it still wont even be an issue because no one will care.

thats the problem.. no one really cares.. because if they cared they could make some presure so companies provided alternative methods...

The Wii and DS online function was caused by Nintendo using Gamespy's servers. This led to over FOUR HUNDRED games losing their online function when Gamespy decided to shut their servers down.

For 3DS/Wii U, Nintendo is using their own servers and network but I'm pretty sure there will be a day that one day, Splatoon or Smash Bros Wii U won't be supported online anymore but I'm hoping it will be a long, LONG time before that happens.

This is most likely just them testing it out so in worst case scenario they'll offer a downloadable version of the game.

Xbox One is turning out to have a pretty kickass library of exclusives. :)

It really doesn't matter these days. Crackdown 4 will come along and blow this out of the water, probably without the need for servers. Also I just googled it and apparently the destruction is only going to be in multiplayer anyway, which is pretty shitty. So the game will still be perfectly playable in singleplayer.

There's really no need to pressure companies, because so far it isn't an issue, nor will it be in the future (currently). About the only thing that is an issue is always-online DRM, and EA already had their peepee slapped for that. Proving the people will stand up when its needed.

Smash Wii U + 3DS do perfectly fine as offline games but Splatoon? Oh it's dead once the servers are gone but it'll probably remain available for 3-4 more years tops. Wii U's lifespan is evidently shorter than the previous Nintendo home consoles which will help killing it off.

If Nintendo decides to include backwards compatibility and run Splatoon on NX (or keep the game on the eshop to buy as a download) then chances are they'll keep supporting it for a little longer. Maybe they calculated that it's probably not worth including backward compatibility and just do a "PS4" and drop it.

Nintendo stupidly forced Splatoon to be GamePad-only so they'd have to rework on it to make it compatible with the next Nintendo home console. I personally wouldn't mind if Nintendo pulled a PS4 move.
