The price for used one is about half of the price of a new one here on local Craigslist (that's good for me). Therefore, I want to pick up an used PS Vita. I want homebrew so what should I, so: What model/serial of PS Vita is most desirable (please give 2nd, 3rd place too if possible)? What firmware or other requirements should I look at? What should I check to see whether the PS Vita is fully functional (what are some common issues?! For example: joystick on PSP...)

Please be patient with me because I know nothing whatsoever about PS Vita!

You know, that there is no (Vita) homebrew available/possible in Vita Mode? You'll only be able to run PSP Homebrew with the a compatible Vita in PSP mode.

Actually, Vita mode homebrew is just starting to become available. You need firmware <3.52 though. 3.36 or 3.18 is ideal. It's called Rejuvenate - read past couple months of posts on http://wololo.net
For PSP Homebrew you need 3.36/3.18 or lower if I remember correctly.

Thanks everyone so far. I am looking for more specific answer/guide. As someone who first step into PS Vita. It's extremely confusing.

The only thing you need to look out for is specific system software versions to be able to use Rejuvenate as OneUp said. Anything lower than 3.52 which is the firmware that patched out the use of PSM to get Rejuvenate

I want know more about the PS Vita. I am currently follow the 3DS so when it comes to the New 3DS XL: there are some with better screens, firmware version. I know a few things about the PSP too: such as some PSP 200x has motherboard that more exploitable (autoboot into CFW after power off. I may be mistaken though because I haven't used PSP for quite some time).

Currently there are two versions of PSV. PCH-1000 and PCH-2000. Obviously the 1000 is the first one to get released and the 2000 came out about a year ago. The major differences are that it's 20% thinner and 15% lighter while they replaced the superior OLED for an LCD which allows for longer battery. In terms of hacking it I don't know of any difference between the two.

In short, not really. When the PSV first came out WiFi retailed at $250 and 3G at $300. The difference with 3G was it allowed you to get a data plan so you could use their social media apps on the go. Personally I don't know of anyone that every actually got the 3G version as you can do all the same things with the Wifi version.

Bump for today.

There are so many questions I want to ask. However, seems like the sub-section for PS Vita lacks update, tutorial,....

The most desirable PSVita revisions for homebrew are the PSVita 1000 and 2000 with the PSM and/or PSM Unity utilities installed, as those are capable of launching native PSVita homebrew via Rejuvenate.

More questions: How to install PSM and PSM Unity and Rejuvenate (there seems no guide here)? Also, when buy used PS Vita what should I check?

Both utilities have been removed from the PSN store recently, there are no legal means of obtaining them anymore - you missed your window. What you can do is look out for the next PSP sandbox exploit which will allow you to use PSP homebrew on your Vita, some benefitting from an additional performance boost due to being ran on a PSVita. You can also try to trick the Vita into installing the Unity utility provided you're on firmware 3.20 or lower:

http://wololo.net/2015/07/19/how-to-install-psm-dev-for-unity-on-ps-vita-firmware-3-20-and-above/

From there you will have to wait - the Unity version of Rejuvenate has not been released yet:

I wonder whether what firmware brand new original PS Vita comes with? I saw one on local Craigslist. Looking for 3.18 firmware. Is there a way to check serial number to know firmware of PS Vita? (as this thread with N3DS https://gbatemp.net/threads/n3ds-xl-firmware-by-version-number.381479/)

This is a different question: hypothetically, I buy an used PS Vita with <3.18 (2.05 to be exact), can I still be able to update to 3.18 firmware then install PSM or PSM for Unity then install homebrew? If so, please help pointing me to still working guides. Does physical games be used as exploit or I need digital games?
