Hey guys. So I have an original 3DS that is still on 4.4. All I want to do, for now, is install a few legit CIAs onto it, maybe do something else later but I don't know for sure if I can be bothered. I have a Sky3DS that has Cubic Ninja on it, if that helps. I know I can look this up myself but this is my nephew's 3DS so I need to make sure I do it right :X

Since you are on below 4.5 version, use this tutorial:

Which one would be easier to do for installing legit CIAs (with or without cubic ninja), rxTools or Pasta?

If you have CN, you don't need a CFW for legit CIA install , you can simply run FBI and install legit CIA without anything else

Oh wow, that's great! Though if I wanted to update it to latest firmware (to play online and download game updates) and still do CFW later I'd need to do it through an emulated nand or something right?

You don't need to update for either ; you can play online on any game as long as you have the latest game update, and you can access the eshop using pastacfw and an eshop Spoofer , I don't have enough time to go into details about either; but another member might help you

But yeah you can setup emunand to access the latest update and use other stuff

You're in luck... I would create an EmuNAND and install RxTools just so you'll be less likely to brick your console if you want to mess around with your emuNAND and have homebrew at the same time. But since you own Cubic Ninja already and have a Sky3DS, you have a couple of options here. I would just go ahead and install RxTools and have an EmuNAND, imo, it's better in the long run

You don't have to create CFW with rxTools either, plus that it's a lot easier to launch.

Phew, so I installed rxtools following this guide, installed the legit cias (I can't remember if I installed them to sysnand or emunand, and I still don't know which one I should have chosen), and then did the mset thing so emunand could be loaded from the settings menu. Everything seemed to be running fine. The legit cias wouldn't start in sysnand but updated and loaded fine in emunand, so I showed my nephew how to get into emunand and then left him on his merry way. He told me later that the mset trick stopped working so I told him to go to the browser and that loaded rxtools so he could choose emunand. But now he's telling me that all of the games have disappeared except one.

I guess what I'm asking is should I have installed those cias to sysnand or emunand, and is that why they have disappeared from both the sysnand and emunand menus?

If they are actually legit CIAs you can install them to sysNAND amd play from there without going into rxMode at all. (Some may not work due to needing a higher firmware though)

The MSET "trick" stops working if a DS or DSi game is run, and you would need to run the code.bin again to install it again.

The games disappearing can be caused by any of these reasons:
-you installed a game that is not from your region. Those games should appear if you launch another app and exit back to the homemenu
-you installed the games to NAND destination instead of SD destination (the option is in FBI). If the games do not show up in Data Management then they might be installed in Nand (which should never be the case unless the game is a DSi game).
-you installed the games to emunand, but your nephew went to Data Management while in SysNand, thus wiping all the games from being seen on Emunand. This only happens if your Nands are linked.

I suggest you install the games to a single place you are sure of (emunand or sysnand), then unlinking your nands. If you can't tell the difference then read up about it, it is explained in the infographic in the tutorial you followed, as well as in the Emunand section of the tutorial.

Oh yeah, he would have played a DS game from his DSTwo and that is what stopped the mset.

When I see his 3DS again I'll unlink the nands and then make sure the cias are installed to emunand (which I updated to 9.9). The legit cias are the correct region, luckily I use the PAL/EUR region. I think I understand the difference between emunand and sysnand, but I suspected there might be some benefit to installing them to sysnand though and I think I just panicked and chose either one. The games that disappeared though, can I recover them and their save files and then make sure they are on emunand?
