Hi, everyone!
I just bought an o3ds xl with firmware 4.5.0-10E
I'm wondering what can be the best choice to make it able to play backup games at this day.
If I understood things correctly, a device with this firware can install the mset exploit without needing extra hardware, just using a file in the root of the sd card.
Is that right?

To tell the truth, I don't know if it's a good idea spending 60 euros to get a gateway and use it for 3ds and ds games. I'm tempted, cause it looks faster organizing games that way rather than installing cias through a cfw.
So, can I use both gateway and cfws with the same exploit? That way I can have the pros of both methods. Or do I have to choose between the two?

Thanks in advance for your help and I hope the homebrew scene for this console will become bigger and bigger. It would be nice being able to use this system to play music or to watch movies.

I think it would be a waste of money.

You can use both with the Spider/Browser exploit, that's for sure.
As for using the MSET for both, I'm not sure, but I think you can't and you will need to reinstall a different MSET exploit code every time.

Thanks for your reply!
Just to be sure, the mset method doesn't need to be reinstalled every time I turn off the machine, right?
And I suppose the browser exploit needs a working wifi connection every time I want to play, right?
I'd like to know what is the fastest way to play backup games, my worry is having to redo the same action every time I turn off the 3ds. I know, I'm a bit spoiled, but I'm looking for a mod I do just the first time and then even my little sister can play on her own.
Sky3ds isn't an option, I just don't like it. What's the fastest way between the other options?

The MSET method can be unintentionally uninstalled under certain circumstances, e.g. if you play a DS game.
Otherwise it is not deleted even when you turn the console off.
The browser exploit needs to connect to a web page for a brief moment, so yes.
I would say the easiest way is to use the browser exploit and leave the 3DS on and closed (suspended) when possible (to avoid running the exploit once and again).
Then, using MSET is more convenient but requires a few extra steps for configuration.
In your case I will set the rxTools MSET up, and use that.
And if you happen to also buy a GW, I would use the browser exploit to boot it occasionally.

Ah, I thought the browser exploit was intended just to install mset. So can it be used to run homebrews directly?
And I think I'll not buy a gateway. With rxtools can I play games that need a firmware > 4.5?
That way I could play almost everything, even gba games. But not ds games, I guess.
Last question: with rxtools games are installed in the sdcard? So should I buy a bigger card?

I'm using both Gateway and rxTools with the same emuNAND, but GBA games only work on sysNAND. At least for me, I dunno why. And the only way I figured how to install Big Blue Menu or FBI on sysNAND was through Gateway.
Of course you can play games that require firmwares higher than 9.8, that's what emuNAND is for.
rxTools only runs CIA games, which are installed on the SD card. So yes, you'd better get a big card. 32GB Kingstons are pretty cheap nowdays.

You can use the browser, or MSET to run rxTools; and then rxMode.
Don't forget first of all to make a nand backup and format emunand.
For this you can use the gateway software and the browser exploit, you don't need a gateway card for this step.
rxMode emunand can be updated upto FW 9.8 and beyond, so yes, it supports everything.
You can install many homebrews as CIAs, you also can install 3DS games converted to CIA in the rxMode emunand home menu.
You will be able to play gba games but not ds games, just as you say.
It would be good if you use an SD (or microSD with SD adapter) of at least 32GB.

I don't use rxTools because I game mostly on a n3ds, but I found this for you:
  • Can i play GBA or DS/DSi games?
    • Yes, in both emuNand and sysNand. The only issue is that to make those apps playable on emuNand you need to install them in sysNand too, or have your Nands linked.

Yeah, I've seen that before... But having to install them in two places (or linking the NANDs) seems more of an inconvenience than a convenience, so nah.

Ook, I didn't know you can use emunand without the gateway card. This rxtools looks fabulous.
Gba games are installed directly as .gba or I need the cia version?
To unlink sysnand I need to hard format the 3ds after I installed the emunand on the sdcard?
And... I'm buying the sd card. Can I use a 64 GB microsd sdxc if I use an adapter and format it in fat32? Is there a difference in speed with a 32 GB "big" sdcard if both are of the same class? (10)

Gba games has to be in virtual console .cia format.
Yes, just format one of your nands (sysnand or emunand) to unlink them.
Your micro sd card should works great (but I don't know for the speed).

Enjoy RxTools ^^

if you want the simple life, go with gateway, very good cart.
Actually if you want a simple life go with Sky3DS, you don't even have to care about fw updates.
Everything interesting that you can do with gw (emunand, cia, modding, etc.) is a little not so simple and can also be done with rxtools.

Is there a way to convert them from gba to cia or do I need directly the cia version dumped from the vc?

Yes, just format one of your nands (sysnand or emunand) to unlink them.
Ok, so I install the emunand and then I format it? After that is already unlinked? Is there a way to verify that?

Your micro sd card should works great (but I don't know for the speed).
I'm ordering the orange samsung evo 64 GB card. I hope my sd adapter still works fine.

Enjoy RxTools ^^
To tell the truth, I didn't understand the difference between rxtools, cake and pasta + firmlaunch. All of them look capable of playing all games with no region lock issues, I'm pretty confused about choosing between them. What are their advantages and disadvantage?

paying 60 euros for a drm device? please don't...
Yeah, you're right. Depending of what will happen in the next weeks it could be a worthless purchase. But I still need something to play nds games (the dstwo is still available? Or buying a cheaper r4 is almost the same thing, for a 3ds?)

if you want the simple life, go with gateway, very good cart.
I'll wait another month to see what happens. Maybe it will be less expensive now that there are so many alternatives.

Cubic ninja is way more useful than a gateway and cheaper...
Uhm, I'm not sure I need it with my firmware. Cubic Ninja is needed for another exploit, but what advantages can I have if I can use both mset and spider without extra hardware? Or am I missing something?

I'd like to not have worries about updates, but I don't like the method of pressing a button to change the game. Depending the manufactoring of the card that button will break (sooner or later).

You can use that to convert it : https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-agb_firm-signature-patcher-gba-rom-converter.390313/

Or simply search in the "famous 3ds site" where you can find all what you want ^^

If you use the same sd card for two nands and if they are unlinked yo should have two folders (random numbers that's mine, not yours) in the "Nintendo 3DS" folder on the root of our SDCard.

If not your two nands share the same folder and that mean they are linked.

Choose RxTools, many features, nearly nothing that you can't do ! RxTools is the best for old3ds now !

GBA & DSI, region free, lastest emunand version (so eshop access), pirated games (of course), and many others things that make RxTools a must have.

Yeah, you're right. Depending of what will happen in the next weeks it could be a worthless purchase. But I still need something to play nds games (the dstwo is still available? Or buying a cheaper r4 is almost the same thing, for a 3ds?)

With old3ds there is a trick to make nearly all ds flashcard compatible again, dstwo, acekard and r4 works. (All flash card that work in 2.0 version of the 3ds can work again)

I'll wait another month to see what happens. Maybe it will be less expensive now that there are so many alternatives.

No gateway please...

You don't need cubic ninja, but it's fun to have it ^^

I'm the guy who goes if you can afford it, get a Gateway if you're on that firmware. IT's the easiest if you just want to download and play roms (OMG WHO SAYS THAT HERE WE LOVE OTHER FEATURES NOT JUST PIRACY).

Download games, put on microSD in top slot, load DS Profile, press SELECT, select game, play game. Done.

Sorry many people here hate on it and hate having to spend any money on it and enjoy waiting an hour or so to install CIAs even if the game they want to try could be complete garbage... I don't.

If you want to download a 3DS file and run it easily and you have the money, just get a Gateway. Least amount of effort and time involved to download and play. Thanks PEACE AMERICA

I have a GW, and I don't endorse it. It is a waste of money.
First of all, installing launcher.dat and MSET is not "a simple process", and then you have to take care not to update sysnand by error.
Sorry, but the fool-proof ultra simple option is Sky3DS... Even if it is a bore, as you can't play modded games, homebrew, GBA or CIA DLCs in a simple way.
The same can be said about GW: you can't play modded games, homebrew, GBA or CIA DLCs in a simple way.
You are just wasting your money with GW when there is rxTools.
I always used CIAs as the console drains quite less battery than with the GW card connected. Now my GW is in a drawer collecting dust.

I'm agree with one point, gateway is the easiest way. But not the best, the best is RxTools, no comparison ...
