Hacking New Super Mario Brothers U Custom Level - Lava Falls

And I return again with another custom level. This time, it's a bit more challenging and the theme is that Peach's Castle theme.



This wasn't just a level, though. This level actually has more custom stuff than you wouldn't believe. I finally understood how custom paths and path nodes work, so I put in 2 of them (the raft, and the moving lava block) and volia, they worked perfectly. But this time, I'm going to show you the internal parts of this level. :D

Now the new part, paths and path nodes...
Paths

Offset 0x00 is the ID of the Path, so 01 is 1 and 02 is 2.
Offset 0x03 is the Path Index, which means if path #1 has 2 paths, the path index for path #2 would be 2, and that's how it finds out how many paths there are.
Offset 0x05 is the number of nodes present.
Offset 0x07 is the looping flag, if set to 02 it will loop. 00 is no looping.

(oh, it's 20 bytes per row, this makes it make more sense.)
These are a bit more tricky. Let's just use the first 0x14 bytes for this example. This is 1 path node.
Offsets 0x00 and 0x01 are the X position
Offsets 0x02 and 0x03 are the Y position
0x04 through 0x0B aren't really known atm, but they are Acceleration, Delay, and Speed. They're floats, and floats are stupid. :D

I'm just wondering, this is pretty cool stuff dude but I'm intrigued how are you playing it, using it etc..? Will this be playable some time? Can you give any juicy details?

Is it to do with the upcoming exploit?, have you got to have a copy of the original game to run it etc..? or is it back up related?

I go to do something else and people ask how to do it, and I will explain it. All you had to do was ask and not say "omg they're hiding something" and whine about it.

It's tested using Cafiine and the Kernel Exploit. The reason there's no tutorial is that it's useless right now, and the people who have the kernel exploit can do it. Nobody else can. So that hinders a tutorial useless.

Well, it's done by making the level in NSMBW Reggie, and matching up the tileset numbers with NSMBU. The result in NSMBW is a bunch of random tiles but in NSMBU it matches up perfectly. I hex edit in the sprites and all that.

  • New backgrounds
  • ASM Hacks
  • Longer levels
  • More sprites to choose from
  • Rotation controllers, boss choosing
  • Many other types of switches
tbh I hate the Mario Maker comments. I think a lot of the levels from that will be unfair, kaizo, or just plain spammy with enemies and all that shiz.

This is awesome!! I can't wait to play these custom levels like I have been with NSMBW! Keep up the great work guys and thank you very much for taking the time to test and edit all this stuff. I would love to see a Reggie NSMBWU! I am just now creating my own levels with Reggie for NSMBW lol

Don't forget Slopes! The most basic thing and Nintendo doesn't implement them.

Oh, and the ability to insert anything into a "?" block can be done via ASM, right?
