New Android Device - The W3D - Preorder on Amazon!

Definitely thought this device deserves a bit more of a spotlight. I had the chance to play it at this year's E3 last week, and the console is actually available now for pre-order on Amazon.com. It's a smartphone colliding with the Nintendo 3DS at this point, and it has the following specifications:
  • 8 core CPU
  • 2 GB RAM built in
  • Starting with 16 GB internal storage and support for up to 64GB MSD
  • 5.5" 1080p HD display with 3D stereoscopic screen capable of "Eye-tracking", similar to the New 3DS
  • Dual joystick controls, including shoulder buttons
The device also has the following features:
  • Open Source: Download and play games from any Google-based distribution platform
  • Dual Sim, unlocked GSM and CDMA for 4G LTE support
  • Long-Lasting Battery Life: Five to seven hours of battery life for playing with 10 to 16 hours of battery life on standby via a 4000mAH battery
  • Fully Compatible with Touch Screen Android Games: W3D's unique button interface allows any previous Android touch screen game to be customized by the end user.
  • Launches with Android 4.4
I personally loved it, when I got my hands on it. I didn't receive a price on that day at the convention, but I do have one now - it's $399 on Amazon. I think that this has a decent chance of kicking off, and this company was incredibly confident in their presentation. Looking forward to seeing what else comes out of it!

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say smartphone + Vita, since this device has almost nothing in common with a 3DS except that it plays games like, well, every other smart device?

As for the phone itself, neat, I suppose. I won't be changing out my Nexus 6 anytime soon, but still neat.

I just want to play SNES emulators on the go. 399? Unless the hardware, buttons and control stick are awesome, I think I'll pass and get the JXD instead.

It's actually got 3D viewing capabilities. ;)

An 8-core "octi-core", as they put it, processor sounds more like an MTK6592 processor than anything worthwhile. I get that it's got glassesless 3D and 2GB of RAM but at this point if I'm buying a mobile gaming device on Android, I'd prefer a New Tegra processor or at least an Intel Bay Trail, if they support OpenGL ES 3.

I can look into that if you would like - I'll ask my contact on the next round of questioning that I do for him. :)

Someone needs to make something like this with a bay trail proc running Windows. Would be beast. I love my HP stream 7, emulator powerhouse, runs everything up to and including ps1, n64 buttery smooth, not like Android and its half assed emulators.

It also runs old PC games super duper smooth so anything that was multiplat on the PC during the GC/PS2/Xbox era runs great (with a minor fuss from Windows 8). Would be awesome if it had built in controls and a bigger battery. Why hasn't any company made this yet? Considering I paid ~100 for the tablet I'm sure someone could manufacture something like that in the sub-200 range.

Oh and for anyone considering the JXD's, I wouldn't touch em. I had the S7100 and build quality was garbage, along with having terrible input lag.

The D-pad positioning is not that good it seems (should be above imo) ...the ergonomics and how the buttons fell ...I can't tell much about those without testing this thing myself

Edit: Actually, I watched some hand-on videos, and the ergonomics seems bad..

...so, meh ...I don't know. I'm interested, but not that much yet.

Edit2: Also found out that this is not the only gamer's phone that This company have done ...the last one was pretty much crap ...the company also do some mmo knockoffs..

My interest on this phone dropped a bit more I think :P

The JXD, if you get that, you'll need firmware mods; by default there are many issues in the source code, 58 Hz refresh rate, screen tearing, right d-pad not working, there are a few modders that fixed all the problems with the JXD firmware, but beware, the company no longer offers customer support for it.

That's kinda neat, though there's almost no good games on android, and even less that use actual controls. I don't keep up with phones since I got a new one a year or so ago and wont need one for a while, but the specs sound nice for the price. Though still morbidly overpriced like all phones. Built in storage is pretty skimpy for a gaming phone too.

Soooooo...it has...3D...for allllllllllll those great Android games that are...3D?

Uhh...ok I guess? 3D seems absolutely useless on Android, especially when there have already been 3D Android devices that just fell flat on their face, and as such there's virtually 0 worthwhile 3D content. And that price tag seems way too high, too >.> And disgusting circle pads instead of actual analog sticks, no thanks. A nice try, I guess

...no expandable memory? Pass.

Also 10 hours of standby is incredibly short for a gaming device that has no sim card.
And where do you see it say no expandable memory? The Amazon store page clearly says "16 GB of Flash RAM and 2 GB of system RAM means a lot of memory expandable with up to 64 GB micro SD card slot"...and it also has both CDMA and GSM capabilities, too, so...it does have a SIM card. So I guess your entire post is just straight up wrong? Probably should've at least checked the Amazon link if nothing else.

... I'm reading a bulletin list from a thread in a "news" section of the forum from my phone. Sorry I have the staff the benefit of the doubt. Will remember to not trust you again next time.

Interesting piece of gear but the action buttons and right analog stick should be swapped and the dpad looks junky. 8 cores sounds good on paper but will hardly ever be taken advantage of and 3D support is about nil since there has only been one other device (phone) that I'm aware of that has used it. There might be a few games at launch that support it (by bribes from the mfr) but I highly doubt many programmers will go through the trouble of doing all the additional artwork just for 2 devices. Watching 3D video is probably the only plus it will have in that area but it might not even have decent support for that. I'll stick with my s7800b. ;)

I have to agree with cracker on his points. The price for this is way too high for features that will be underutilized and the lack of shoulder buttons is a big problem as that's been pretty much standard in controllers for 20 years. I'll stick with my Shield Portable. :/ (almost got a s7800b though!)

Edit: Wrong about shoulder buttons, there are 4 very small ones on the unit.
