I just updated my sons 3ds and now the R4 doesn't work. I am wondering if I can roll this back?

Newer 3ds updates break older carts like r4. You'll have to buy a new card like R4i Gold which works on everything including the newest update. I'd provide you a link but the place I bought mine is closed. Try using shoptemp or google or I'm sure someone will post somethin.
How do I know if the one I have is Gold or not? I didn't realize but it looks exactly like the ones at shoptemp. "R4 i , 3DS, Revolution for DS", it says.
There's a few clones out there so yeah it can be very confusing. You'll want the flashcard that has the website http://r4ids.cn/ on them.

The link you gave me has the best price by far but in the reviews there is a guy that says it will not work with a 3ds, is there truth to that?

Ahhhhhh that's the card I was talking about actually. I wasn't sure what card you bought and I assumed you had something else. You don't need to buy another card just to get it to work on your 3DS in fact you just have to update the one you have already have to work on later firmwares.
To do that you'll need either a 3DS with an older firmware that works with your card or a DSi/DS and download the patch available from here: http://filetrip.net/dl?3mbPXwTcpP and just follow the instructions in the readme.
