I've looked and looked, but the few posts I have found referring to this model are people talking about bricking them by updating to play games like boktai and mother 3.

which is exactly what I want to do. Which kernel do I download? Can anyone tell me definitively which kernel I can use without breaking this model?

I have not seen anything about people bricking them permanently with updates, occasionally the kernel fails to write but it is usually just a matter of sorting out the microSD and flashing it again.

It should come with at least 1.74 and that should work with Mother 3 (mine did anyway), the Mother 3 stuff was mainly for those with slightly older revisions to sort an issue with the NOR. Not sure what people were updating to play boktai for, at best it was one of those ones that works better with hard reset (hold L and A to do it).

I haven't heard of any of the new ones being bricked due to an update. Unless someone who knows and says otherwise, I'd just go a head and update to the latest kernel from here. Unless you plan to use a micro SD smaller than 1GB.

Okay! I updated and it was fine just like you said. It still whitescreens when i try to play any Boktai game, though. I tried running the games in an emulator and they work fine there. I know people have gotten boktai to work on this thing, what am I doing wrong? Could it be the solar sensor patch?

**Edit** Copied Boktai to NOR and it works now? Thanks guys

I haven't messed with it personally, but it might work from the PSRAM if you use the L + A combo to reset to the BIOS when starting it up.

Thanks, that actually works. Never knew tat button combo exists.

Edit: where did you find this button combo? I can not find that documented on the official ezflash site or the wiki. Are there any more button combos?

The soft reset vs hard reset thing has been there since the EZ3 days, technically before as well but the EZ3 loader is what eventually became the EZ4 one.

The EZTeam have been known to vary between them as they figure out what is causing an issue for certain games, however prior to the new batch and loaders to go with it most people used the Modulo reset loaders which forced hard reset regardless so most people did not know about it.

There are some other buttons other than that and the NOR stuff but most of them are legacy things (I think it was R on the start screen brings up the date/time stuff from when the EZ3 had a real time clock chip), or for the barely functional cheat engine.

I didn't know the soft reset button combo L+up+A+B and the hard reset button combo L+A before I read posts from gbatemp. ANd I haven't used these two reset methods on my EZ FLASH IV until so far. Maybe they will be of help in the future.

Well, the softreset and sleep mode only work if you patch them in. You can make the combination anything you want. Games that already support sleep mode, you can just go in with a hex editor and fix the sleep mode for EZ4.

I've updated to 1.77 just fine, just cannot get the EZ4_Client.exe working on Windows 10
There are a couple of other patchers out there, like GBATA. Though, I'd recommend setting up a 32bit Windows XP VM if you want to use hardware that relies on software mostly developed when 32bit OSs were still the norm. It will save a lot of hassle later.
