Hi everyone. First of all, I posted this in the Wii section because I didn't find one for the GameCube.

Basically, my brother came over from Germany last night, and I asked him for Super Mario Sunshine. Naturally, there were no NTSC versions on the market so he brought along a PAL version and a FreeLoader. The FreeLoader was PAL, I can't use it.

So what I'm asking for is, is there any way (a cheap way) to 'soft-mod' a GameCube to play other region games? Or backups? Or anything without a severely intense tutorial that requires soldering skills? If any shipping is needed, it'd be amazing if it could be shipped to Costa Rica.

Thanks.

Probably the closest thing to a Gamecube softmod would be using Datel's SD Media Launcher, but as far as I know, it only supports non-SDHC cards (i.e., up to 2GBytes). I guess you could also use an action replay + SDGecko (if I recall, there's a generic code you can use to launch homebrew programs off the SD card in it, so then you could run Swiiss to use backups and such).

I have no idea what this is. Can you inform me a bit more?

There is no writable storage on the Gamecube like the NAND on the Wii so you'll likely need a mod chip if you can find one anymore.

You should get a modchip. Qoob Pro is the best option (you can boot straight from the SD card) but maybe it's not easy to find everywhere.
There's the problem of lack of DMA in the SD card reading, so the homebrew launcher (Swiss is the best one) has to keep track of all the data transfers, lagging movies and increasing load times.
You should go check http://gc-forever.com/ for more info.

Anyway if you want to play GC games, you should get an old Wii (the model with the controller ports). You can run GC games right from the SD card or USB and there won't be any lag.

An action replay and a SD gecko will allow you to do all that and more. Action replay has freeloader included and there's a sdload code (inputting it manually will be a pain in the ass though, be warned) which you can use to do everything else.
