How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games

(Disclaimer: Stop in your tracks and visit
https://gbatemp.net/threads/modify-any-wii-4-3-below.171901/
It is a MUCH more updated tutorial for Soft-Modding your Wii. )

(If you new to Softmod a Wii this will give you a 100% safe guide from start-to-finish to play Wii Games, Gamecube Games and Wiiware/Virtual Console games from an USB-drive. Im not kidding. In this guide we only use official files to minimize any risks apart from Step 4 . But I can assure I used this guide to softmod my sister's Wii. She can now play Skyward Sword by USB-drive without problem! :) )

Requirements:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.
Step 3 - Safety Precaution. Install Priiloader to prevent disc updates to damage your Wii.
Step 4 - Patch IOS and Install WADs using Two Easy Apps. Install USB Loader GX to Play Wii Games .

1. Install Homebrew Channel

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video :

2. Backup Wii NAND (to restore your Wii if anything goes wrong)

Important! Make sure SD-card has more then 700mb free space
Important! Make sure your Wii has more then 700 blocks open. To Check: Turn on your Wii. Goto Wii Options - Data Management - Save Data - Wii. In 'Blocks Open:' there should stand 700 or higher. Then Return to Wii Menu. Press Back 4 times.
Follow S Winegars instructions in video :
- In BootMii use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select.

1. When Wii NAND is backed-up using Project Phoenix Medias video guide. Shutdown Wii. Remove SD-card from Wii and put SD-card into Computer.
2. Open SD:\ and check that you have two following files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN'. Copy these two files into a safe location on your Computer. My tips is to save them into a usb-stick or Dropbox if your Computer crash.
3. Once you saved the two files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN' you should remove them from SD-card (NAND.BIN takes 500mb)
4. Done! :)

1. Plug SD-card into Computer
2. Download Priiloader_v0_7.zip . Unzip and Put it into your SD Card. (SD:\)

(configure Priiloader)
1. Press the "Power" button while holding down the "Reset" button on your Wii until the Priiloader menu is displayed on your screen.
2. In Priiloader select "System Menu Hacks". These are the following 7 hacks I suggest you select: 'Region free EVERYTHING', 'Block Disc Updates', 'Remove NoCopy Save File Protection', 'Block Online Updates', 'Remove Diagnostic Disc Check', 'Move Disc Channel', 'Auto Press 'A' at health screen'. Select Save Settings when Done.
3. To Exit Priiloader select System Menu
4. Done! :)

A video how to configure Priiloader can be found here :

PS: By having Priiloader you prevent disc updates that can damage Homebrew.

4. Install USB Loader and Custom ISO

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

Use cheats (Ocarnia) in Wiiware/VC games
Unfortunely I can't get Ocarnia working with Wiiware/VC games in USB Loader GX. So an alternate solution is to use the App '....tbc

The benefit of emuNAND
WAD installation happens on Computer therefore there is NONE TO LESS risk of Brick your Wii. If you wish to play Wiiware/VC games emuNAND is your solution. period.

Hi I have a question.

First thank you for the tutorial compilation it was great.

I probably sound like a broken record, but I completed it until the dios install, so I put on the gx loader wad showed up good etc.

However, I cant get the games to show up in the usb loader gx app, says 0 games. I used wiibackupmanager to install the backups. The wbs folder is created on root and it seems like it did its job regarding paths.

I did notice, when I go into options in usb loader gx, it says partition :FAT1 "14GB". The drive is fat32, is it normal for usb loader to say fat1 in the options? Im using a 16gb kingston usb stick. Thanks

*EDIT

I formatted the drive to WBFS partition, and it accepted the games, now I guess ill just make another partition on the drive for fat32 for snes backups. If anyone has any tips regarding this, I would very much appreciate it. THANKS>

Hey so I finally got a replacement Wii and guess what - All is working well! I'm stuck at installing Wiiware and VC games however. I have emunand set up and I can see the VC games in my channel, but trying to launch them it tells me I need a specific IOS installed. I have the latest USB loader installed and latest DIOS MIOS from DMToolbox. Am I missing a setting on the game loader or something?

Edit: Figured it out - I didn't have d2x installed (or at least the right version). Found and downloaded d2xv52, installed to 249 and 250 and presto!

Im stuck on step 5 for PriiLoader. It just seems to freeze. Any ideas?
dont worry. Priiloader sometimes freezes your Wii after its installed, its very normal.
Just reboot yout Wii and hold reset button on your Wii while it starts, and you should load up in Priiloaders Menu.

From the tutorial text...
6. Once Priiloader is installed shut down the Wii (Sometimes you Wii freezes after Priiloader installation. Its totally normal. Just re-start your Wii with reset and after Wi Menu appears shut down the Wii)

What's strange is that I took a NAND backup from before I installed d2x-v52 and restored to it, but DM still won't load up. Is there something I need to do now that I have emuNAND loading my VC games from USB to get DiosMios working again?

I've tried uninstalling/reinstalling dm2.11 and the RC wad's but that was also a no go.

have you tried to Install RVL-mios-10 and then reinstall both diosmios AND rvl-bc-v6 ?
Otherwise, it could be your HDD having a bad sector.. ?

WARNING also, ...
DO NOT USE PimpMyWii, Its poison for your Wii!!!!

Another guy who solved it.

GC backups were running flawlessly until one of my friends accidentally updated my wii from 3.2J to 4.1J.
GC backups can be shown in the usb loader(tried multiple loaders), but when I try to boot them, the LED of DVD slot just blinks 2-3 times and then the console immediately shuts down.

I've tried changing loaders, reinstalling MIOS v4 & v10, DM 2.10, 2.9... nothing changed.

One more thing, it is strange that the boot2 has been updated to V4, but as far as I know, boot2v4 was coming with 4.2 instead of 4.1, I've never had updated my console higher than 4.1.
So I doubt that that friend might tried another update to 4.2 or higher but failed somehow, only the boot2 was updated.

Update:
I read a post of Cyan somewhere that advised to reinstall BCv6 & MIOS v10 before the DM(L).
Before I do that, I found my BC was V2 instead of V6, so I installed BCv6 manually and everything now works ok.
Thanks.

have you tried to Install RVL-mios-10 and then reinstall both diosmios AND rvl-bc-v6 ?
Otherwise, it could be your HDD having a bad sector.. ?

WARNING also, ...
DO NOT USE PimpMyWii, Its poison for your Wii!!!!

Yeah I tried installing mios-10, reinstall DM and BC. Also tried uninstalling/reinstalling basically every WAD under the sun that could have a part in it. It's something on the drive I think because I can run GC games after a restore and simple install of d2x on a separate drive. What's strange is that everything worked flawlessly before the d2x installation. So now I've deleted all GC games from my drive and I'm re-transferring them via DMTool, hopefully that will get things jiving again. Otherwise I'll just have to get a separate drive for only GC games which wouldn't be too bad, but still a pain haha.

Guys,

In the video of Step 5, at 1:30, what is that step for? (Drag and dropping the iso file). Is it necessary for playing wii game or is that a GameCube thing?

Thanks.

Hi Stephaniie, thanks for this thread, it helped me to update my softmod. I posted about this elsewhere, but I want to see if anyone here has an idea...

I have a Wii (got it in 2009 so it's old), not sure what drive model but it doesn't play burned games, System menu 4.3U. It's softmodded, just did a full reinstall of the latest IOS/cIOS/MIOS set using ModMii. HBC v 1.1.2 (running on IOS58 v24.32, priiloader v0.7, not sure of the version of USB Loader GX but it's the latest internal update. DIOS MIOS 2.11 installed, that works with my 1.5TB HDD (Seagate, USB 2.0) and the Gamecube games I have on it. Using CfgUSBLoader for Wii games, and those are loading fine. My problem, simply, is Nintendont.

I have tried EVERYTHING I can find short of loading off SD card (which for many reasons I'd rather not do). I have tried multiple hard drives, even no hard drive - Nintendont refuses to run, always dumping me into the infamous "Exception (DSI)" code page error (once it was "Exception (ISI)" but that was only once...). I signed up to ask about this because no matter what version I try, it's the same (currently I'm using what is being reported as v3.330 in the screen I see for 2 seconds before the code page shows up. I just downloaded that this morning.) So you or anyone else in the know, can you help me get this working? I love what's been done and really want the better compatibility, but so far Nintendont has been a real bust for me... Thanks in advance!!

Here's my SysCheck for what it's worth:

its a step called discEx , its was some method for gamecube games in old times.

would not recommend it today, just use dmtoolbox instead ... i use dmtoolbox and it works.

You can't have a wiimote with motion plus. It has to be a generic or first gen one, or a gamecube controller if your wii supports them.
