Early access is really a different case. For every game that stops receiving updates halfway through its development cycle, there's an early access success out there. Usually coming from indie studios who are honestly just trying to get some feedback during the development process. It's a matter of buyer beware, by which I mean everybody should do their research on a developer's track record, the current content in the game, and the content promised for release.Yes! Yes!
Pre orders and early access releases are so frustrating. The issue is that people continue to pay for the games (Including me, on occasion) and then publishers realize that they can continue to get away with it.
Edit: Sorry for the double post =(
Pre-orders are usually confined to the realm of AAA releases, and thus they're usually modeled and marketed in a ridiculous money-grubbing manner. Where you can spend $20 on an early access product and either end up with something really great or really shitty, pre-orders usually ask you to spend $50 to $60 on a product. They also ask for it as much as a year ahead of time, and you have no greater guarantee of getting a good game.
