XL models are worse then the normal size models?

Not at all. Just preference. Each have their advantages. I personally want a white N3DS so I will be importing one from Japan in the next few days.

3DS
- Smaller/portability
- Crisper graphics due to higher PPI
- Faceplates
- Comes in White with SNES button colors
- more comfortable for small hands and children
- Cheaper

3DS XL
- Larger screen (1")
- Slightly longer battery life (according to Nintendo maybe 1 hr)
- More comfortable in hands (3DS is just smaller and a bit more cramped. Although some with smaller hands have said it is actually less confortable. My hands get cramped on the regular 3DS honestly, but the other benefits still make me want it over the XL.)
- Stronger/firmer hinges (when clicking at positions the XL seems a bit firmer from comparisons I've seen)
- Metallic colors if you're into that
- Red for US
- Larger Stylus

they're already charging americans $30 more than japanese, and europeans $100 more i think they're squeezing us enough. if you can import something from another country with fast shipping and still get it cheaper than at your local store then something is seriously wrong in my opinion. imports typically cost more not less.
I'd actually a smart move on Nintendo's part to take advantage of the yen's value vs the dollar and keep the price up there. The value of the yen has dropped over the past few months. Force everyone to pay extra for the new shiny XL and not even offer the cheaper model. Not nice, but a decision I may have made as well if I was Nintendo. Plus they have the numbers and I'm assuming the standard 3DS had the worst ratio vs the XL in the US compared to other regions and part of if not the main reason the US is only getting the XL. Apparently the XL even outsells the regular version 2:1 in Japan from what I've read so the sales must have been even more separated in the US.

I'm pretty upset over all this. I spoke with a rep at NoA an she said there's definitely no release of it for the US and that we can try to change things by calling and having them make a feedback ticket over it. Alternatively, tweeting NoA and starting petitions is another way she said. With her advice I went and made a petition https://www.change.org/p/nintendo-release-non-xl-new-3ds-in-north-america

I've just seen a n3dsxl with its hinge woobly because of its weight. Maybe a bad batch. My n3ds is fine with strong and stable hinge.

Maybe it should be a petition for an Ambassador N3DS.
