hey folks, I skipped the last gen console and played most of the last gen games either from psp or NDS releases. in 2013 I bought a new gaming laptop that could handle most of multiplatfform last gen games. my question: is a PS3 still worth it? back then I hold my purchase because my favorite game (persona 5) has not been released, and it will be released in ps4 anyway, so I couldn't care to buy a PS3

the only game that made me want to buy a PS3 was FF XIII (which turned out to be a crap after I played it firsthand on PC), now I feel there are no more reasons for me to buy a ps3 except their console exclusives such as infamous and ni no kuni.

However, are ps3 exclusives a 'must play'?

I am traditionally a sony console owner, so I'm kinda compulsive to buy all the sony consoles, but if most of the best games are available in PC, I probably will wait until the price becomes very cheap (I also want to buy a Wii... to play gamecube games!)

let me know what you think. :)

Yeah, you should. If you want JRPG that is not total crap it can be a good choice. But my personal favorite is inFAMOUS series.

Well, personally I enjoyed:

- Uncharted
- Uncharted 2
- Uncharted 3
- Infamous
- Infamous 2
- Little Big Planet
- Little Big Planet 2
- Tales of Xillia
- Tales of Graces F

And Tales of Zestiria is coming to PS3 only sometime next year, whenever Bamco gets around to finishing the localization.

Basically, if more than a couple of those games come across as interesting to you, I suggest picking up a PS3. Otherwise, The Last of Us has a PS4 version, which is the only other "must have" PS3 exclusive that comes to mind. I also heard Ni No Kuni was pretty good and is probably worth picking up if you like RPG games other than the Persona series.

I wouldn't say any of those are an absolute must play, but they're fun exclusives and make what is ultimately not a very costly system these days pretty worth it.

Yes.

The Last of Us, Uncharted Series, Ni no Kuni are my recommendations. They also have excellent HD collections of Kingdom Hearts, Shadow of the Collosus and Got of War.

The exclusives alone make it worth it and if you do get a PS3 try to get an already hacked one to make multi use of it (PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, etc) as with a hacked firmware you can do imaginable things that Sony doesn't allow their legal customers to do.

Oh and I'd suggest to avoid the old fat PS3s because they're too heavy and a PS3 Slim can do the same (PS2 games via a hacked PS3 Slim). I like my PS3 60GB but even vertically it takes a good chunk of space.

PS3 that isnt backwards compatible can play PS2 games now (if hacked?) Where have i been for the last few years?

The BC on non BC units is hit and miss, full BC units are still better at it and with the latest Rebug firmware it's super nice :)

Of course given the choice between the space heater of a full BC unit or a slim with decent BC via software.... I think I would pick the software version, unless there is a specific PS2 game that is a deal breaker from the slim units? (I don't know I have a full BC unit.)

IF you go on Ebay right now, there are 3.55 OFW PS3s on sale right now. Buy from the Top Rated Plus users, they're the most trustworthy of all.
If you ask, they will install CFW and other homebrews and other things that you're possibly worried about. (THe guy dehashed, installed CFW, and preinstalled Multiman for me) It's not really any big trouble since they already have all the latest files on hand.

Edit: If you're from one of "those" countries, try black market although the stuff is expensive as hell.

PS3 with cfw is best 3.55 i heard also they have done it with the 4.55 version. I heard there are a lot of online hackers ruined the gameplay for others. Thats sucks so i went to the ps4 now:) only play ps3 for the newer games to test before buying it for ps4.

since ps5 is going to be released I decided to get a ps3 through auction sites. there is this offer of PS3 (CECH J02/OFW 4.66/ 40 gb) for 150 bucks. I think it's a good deal since ps3 in my home country is still priced about 340-400 bucks. can someone inform me whether this ps3 is hackable?

honestly I just want to play persona 5 and maybe some console exclusives, so being unable to play ISO is not a big deal, I don't want to spend 300 bucks for 8 years console solely for one game. but it would be nice if I can play homebrews since it's kinda fun to see how far you can push your hardware :P .

Don't want to create a new thread so I'll ask here - is it worth to buy an used PS3 Slim with cfw installed? I mean, after some time it'll certainly catch an YLoD or some problems with RSX/CPU, and what then? Is it possible to repair it, so it would work again for at least few years again before repairing it again? As I don't want to spend money on a "one-time pleasure" (PS3, pads, HDDs etc.) that'll work only for, let's say, few months before it'll break.

yes, you can repair it... but it will cost you a lot of money and time

Are you thinking about reballing the RSX/CPU? Or something else? As I've already asked some of the places in my city (duh, country to be honest) but all of them gave me the same answer: it's not worth it; it'll work for about ~2,8 months; it's only a temporary solution.

And because of that, I simply don't know should I buy a modded PS3 or not, as I said earlier - don't want to lose money and time needed to "backup" games on HDDs, because if later they're going to become useless for me... well, I would be pretty angry and disappointed at the same time.

feel free to buy a ps3... as long as you aren't in absurd conditions (keep the PS3 cool !!!)
that will make sure your ps3 will last for a very long time

Thanks for the help and tips. But I'm still worried what am I supposed to do when it'll break (I mean, come on, it won't work forever, unfortunately...). I take care of all of my things, so this isn't a problem. The thought about repairing it is the thing that keeps me from buying it, as I simply don't know whether it can be repaired and then used normally for a long time (meaning: years). After all, having HDDs full of content, I would want to come back and play these games in the future. Hell, even my kids will definitely want to.

Everything dies out, eventually.
If it breaks, there's the Internet to help you out.
I'll give you some tips:
1. Reapply thermal paste
2. Clean the fans/vents
3. Keep the PS3 on the XMB for a short time before you turn it off
