So I'd be safe to update right?

If you don't care about the exploit, and possibly waiting even longer, and if you don't care about the Wii U mode (Cafe OS), then update. But if you DO want to see the Wii U hacked, then don't update. As a rule, don't update if you care about homebrew.

If a working exploit is found When a working exploit is released, that is pre 5.2, I'll sell my WiiU and buy another. Something tells me one would be pretty easy to find. Kernel exploits lead to more kernel exploits. I'm not worried.
If I want to practice homebrew, I'll target another platform in the meantime. Sometimes I feel like practicing with the current userland exploit and trying to dump some memory and disassemble it. But I can barely understand a stack smash in a linux version 10 years old, let alone advanced ROP chains utilizing Python, Javascript, C and assembly in 2 different architectures. Maybe there be a format string bug in the kernel memory space.......just waiting for me to find it. Prolly not.

I wonder what type/genre of exploit got the MarioKart team from userland to kernel space.

So I'm planning on Homebrewing my vWii. I'm planning on using Smash Stack. I'm planning on doing this: https://gbatemp.net/threads/simple-guide-to-install-cios-on-vwii-backup-nand-and-keys.339890/ I'm planning on playing GCN games using USB Loader GX with Nintendont (Do I need anything special here?).

My question is, is there anyway a Wii U update could brick my system. Also I assume I will be safe doing what I'm about to do, correct?

>Could brick my system
Technically yes but very unlikely. Not anything that would be your fault, if anything it'd be Nintendo cracking down on vWii homebrew which I somehow doubt they'd do since it's been this long and they haven't done anything about it.
Also, you don't need to install any custom CIOSes to run Nintendont, just run Smash Stack, transfer some games to your drive (look up DMToolbox), and either use the Nintendont launcher from the homebrew channel or run USB Loader GX. You don't have to modify the system.

I still recommend you backup your NAND first thing after you install the homebrew channel, though.

Eh that makes me iffy on wanting to do it now. It is true that they haven't yet, but knowing my luck it would happen right after I did it :<

Feel free to update. VWii and WiiU mode are seperate from each other.

Yes, but the exploit has been patched in 5.3.2, unless they care about hacking the Wii U side, then no, it's not safe. Why are you telling him it's safe to update via the internet when so many have said 5.3.2 patches the web exploit? He's better off using a disc update instead.

He was specifically talking about VWii Homebrew he had installed. I assumed he was asking if he could update without losing it. The answer, if the assumption is correct, is yes.

He won't lose it, yes, as Nintendo pretty much gave up updating vWii mode. But if he ever wants to see a hacked Wii U OS, 5.3.2 is the point of no return.
