Now please no flaming or trolling please I want this to be a clean topic. So why hasn't the 3ds hack been open-sourced well I think there is too many gateway fanboys on this site but other then that simple question why. Now I do own a gateway and r4i deluxe and the only reason I just bought a gateway is to run homebrew. The r4i deluxe did me dirty and bricked my XL (or should I say gateway did) but the 4.0b2 firmware was ok it had muti-rom and played all the games I wanted to play but I was fearing that brick again. So the 3ds hack is all software forget the red gateway card for a second the whole hack is software the red card acts as a loader for the roms that's all.

Everything is done on the 3ds's sd card slot, the hack, emu-nand, even rom loading can be done from the sd card of the 3ds and it has been done already (on 4.1 to 4.5 of course) but still. Then there is ssspwn which I don't really want to get into but smea should of known that his hack would work on the new 3ds before it was released because both old and new 3ds uses the same firmware and processes. I don't want to get off topic here but when the ps3 was jailbroken it was also all software and people started jumping to reverse engineer the psjailbreak and did in about 2-3 weeks and released it to everyone.

I don't like when software hacks have a price tag it's not right hardware hacks I can understand because you really need the hardware to exploit the console. The Xbox 360 you can flash your dvd drive so you can run backed up dvds but you need hardware to flash the dvd drive there's no getting around that but the Lt-3.0 firmware is free of charge. Now I'm not a developer or a programmer I'm a 30 year old auto mechanic that has simple soldering skills and have nothing to offer to the 3ds scene at all. The biggest thing I ever done was finding a buffer overflow exploit in a psp game after reading a tutorial on how to find one on wololo.net. But I really hope that someone will come forward and get rid of these 3ds mode flashkit's. That's when the 3ds homebrew will take off like the psp scene. Smea exploit will be very boring if released today and kernal access would mean way better homebrew. For now I will use my overpriced gateway card that uses a encrypted software exploit that is plagued with brick code so people with half a brain can't open-source or copy it easily. When smea releases his work you will have to buy a game to make it work but at lease you can play the game and hopefully it will be a good game like Nano Assault, or a Mario game.

3 letter abbreviation: DRM

And when you think about it, the mset exploit wasn't exactly kept hush hush. It was on 3DBrew for the world to see for a long time. Just gateway did the hard yards and made it work in the form we now enjoy.

I hate DRM and I understand that gateway has made a great product with great support (till it bricks your console). But they made there money and I think its time for a change

They can keep making their money until:

A) They stop providing support.

B) They try to screw the scene over by releasing a new flashcart that everyone's required to buy.

Until then, I think everyone here is content with paying them to do the work since they do a fine job.

You are talking about a company which, when it saw its firmware being reverse engineered, took heavy steps to obfuscate it, deliberately withdraws 7.x decryption from its SD launcher if you don't have the Gateway card in for the sole purpose of making sure you forked cash to actually own their product, and rolled out an update designed to kill consoles that ran on competing cards, all the way up to and including complete refusal to formally acknowledge that they put that code in there, even when it backfired and caused outrage by bricking a significant number of legitimate users, and then after disabling it still refused to remove that code up to this day.

The last thing these people are is kind enough to give out their tricks for the sheer desire to commit a charitable act. In fact I believe they are historically the worst behaving flashcart team that hasn't pulled a scam. If you had their source code or something capable of doing everything they can, they would probably contact you to "buy" your exploit or resort to spam, attacks and threats to prevent it from being released. The LAST thing these people want is a source code in the wild.

One can only hope that a Cobra USB type scenario happens. Anyone who is well versed in the PS3 scene should know, those who don't well. Basically the cobra USB was a piracy dongle but actually had awesome unique features over that dreaded True Blue peice of sh*t dongle, such as PS2 and PSP ISO game launching. After they made all their money, they made their code open source and later the devs implemented it into PS3 CFWs.

(sarcasm) Oh sure, I'll go down to my local Hack 'R' Us and get right on it. Is 6pm good for you? I sooooo want you to have your peace of mind.:glare:

(on-topic) Do you leave your front door open at night while you sleep so burglars can walk right in and steal your valuables? No? So why do you expect Gateway or ANY developer (including Nintendo) to due so? The PS3 is Not the 3DS and vice versa. Exploits don't furiously shoot out of Developer's asses on a conveyor belt ready-to-use. With new consoles come new territory so obviously what worked with "Console A" won't always work for "Console B". As for why they still charge money, "If your good at something, never do it for free". Also, the time they take to develop features isn't free you know.

Smea exploit will be very boring if released today and kernal access would mean way better homebrew.

Yea, compared to that other exploit we have it's so boring... oh wait...
Don't forget, Kernal access also means roms which some devs are against. Combined with the fact the we are in an era were MOBILE gaming/apps are the lucrative/appealing ventures for developers and hackers as opposed to the PSP/360 days. Some devs have simply left.

Nicely said me buying a gateway a few weeks was like me throwing my money in the trash well that's the way I feel about it. Just so I could play homebrew and supersmash which I hate to say the least

Lol, really? Fair enough but i honestly think the PS3 is about as cancerous as the 3DS scene.

Bitching, whining, piracy devices, 12 year olds who want da romz/ISOz, fanboy-ism (ODE vs free solution, remind you of some thing *cough*3DS scene*cough*) i don't think the two scenes are that different from each other

It's not open source "because money". If it were open source, flashcart manufacturers would be out of a business overnight. Another problem is that nobody wants to go to jail or pay a fine for the rest of their life just so that others can pirate games.

I have a Gateway too. Their flashcart is good. But this has allowed them to do and get away with things no other flashcart company before them did. While they may be happy that people are buying their stuff, I'd keep my distance from them in any other way.

If you think people are gonna risk their livelihoods to make something illegal just so others can do stupid shit with it, your gonna have a bad time.

flashcard and CFW scenes have always been shady....i remember bricked PSP's for someone stealing code and claiming they made it themselves....and this was free code that was still being given away for free but under someone else's name.....so i imagine things would be worse when there is money involved.....i seem to remember some sort of bricking with the PS3 scene too.....oh and the NDS scene....the scene was built on bricks

even the wii too had some bricking action, and there was a N64 game that bricked pirating devices by flashing the bios of the device if you tried to load it on it

Not even just the flashcard companies. Nintendo got in on the act with region changed Korean Wiis, but it's Nintendo, so they got a free pass for the bricking.

Nintendo could get away with murder as long as they make Pokemon and Mario games, people would find an excuse for how it was justified in the grand scheme of things.
