How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games

(Disclaimer: Stop in your tracks and visit
https://gbatemp.net/threads/modify-any-wii-4-3-below.171901/
It is a MUCH more updated tutorial for Soft-Modding your Wii. )

(If you new to Softmod a Wii this will give you a 100% safe guide from start-to-finish to play Wii Games, Gamecube Games and Wiiware/Virtual Console games from an USB-drive. Im not kidding. In this guide we only use official files to minimize any risks apart from Step 4 . But I can assure I used this guide to softmod my sister's Wii. She can now play Skyward Sword by USB-drive without problem! :) )

Requirements:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.
Step 3 - Safety Precaution. Install Priiloader to prevent disc updates to damage your Wii.
Step 4 - Patch IOS and Install WADs using Two Easy Apps. Install USB Loader GX to Play Wii Games .
Step 5 - Install a d2x Custom IOS to enable New Wii Games. Install DiosMios to Play Gamecube Games.
(Spoilers Window) Add 'n Play Wii/Gamecube Games + Update USB Loader GX (req for Gamecube games)
Step 6 - emulate Wii System (NAND) on USB-hdd making Add WiiWare/VC Games near impossible to damage your Wii .

1. Install Homebrew Channel

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video :

2. Backup Wii NAND (to restore your Wii if anything goes wrong)

Important! Make sure SD-card has more then 700mb free space
Important! Make sure your Wii has more then 700 blocks open. To Check: Turn on your Wii. Goto Wii Options - Data Management - Save Data - Wii. In 'Blocks Open:' there should stand 700 or higher. Then Return to Wii Menu. Press Back 4 times.
Follow S Winegars instructions in video :
- In BootMii use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select.

1. When Wii NAND is backed-up using Project Phoenix Medias video guide. Shutdown Wii. Remove SD-card from Wii and put SD-card into Computer.
2. Open SD:\ and check that you have two following files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN'. Copy these two files into a safe location on your Computer. My tips is to save them into a usb-stick or Dropbox if your Computer crash.
3. Once you saved the two files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN' you should remove them from SD-card (NAND.BIN takes 500mb)
4. Done! :)

3. Install Priiloader (regionfree games and stop updates)

1. Plug SD-card into Computer
2. Download Priiloader_v0_7.zip . Unzip and Put it into your SD Card. (SD:\)
3. Download hacks_hash.ini - Scroll down to 'Pre-compiled Hacks download' , right-click, save link as, and save into SD:/apps/Priiloader/ .
4. Remove SD-card from Computer and plug into Wii . Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch Priiloader.
5. Press A to Install
6. Once Priiloader is installed shut down the Wii (Sometimes you Wii freezes after Priiloader installation. Its totally normal. Just re-start your Wii with reset and after Wi Menu appears shut down the Wii)

(configure Priiloader)
1. Press the "Power" button while holding down the "Reset" button on your Wii until the Priiloader menu is displayed on your screen.
2. In Priiloader select "System Menu Hacks". These are the following 7 hacks I suggest you select: 'Region free EVERYTHING', 'Block Disc Updates', 'Remove NoCopy Save File Protection', 'Block Online Updates', 'Remove Diagnostic Disc Check', 'Move Disc Channel', 'Auto Press 'A' at health screen'. Select Save Settings when Done.
3. To Exit Priiloader select System Menu
4. Done! :)

A video how to configure Priiloader can be found here :

PS: By having Priiloader you prevent disc updates that can damage Homebrew.

4. Install USB Loader and Custom ISO

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

Important! Skip 10:00 - 13:00 in the video. We will not use Wbfs Manager instead we use WiiBackupManager to add Wii games, explained in Part 5 - spoiler windows - Play Wii/Gamecube games from USB-hdd.

PS: Just so you know - I tried it myself. If you WiiWare wasn't working through emuNAND. Look in USBLoader GX - Settings - Credits, if your using the 'cIOS249-d2x-v10-beta52' it will not work! Go ahead and install IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad using Step 5 in this guide. Then Wiiware works. :)

Fix Blackscreen with VC in emuNAND
Happens when playing USA games with a European Wii. Open selected VC game - 'Settings' - 'Loader Settings'in 'Video Patch 'select Force NTFC. Press Save. Now it should work. :)

Use cheats (Ocarnia) in Wiiware/VC games
Unfortunely I can't get Ocarnia working with Wiiware/VC games in USB Loader GX. So an alternate solution is to use the App '....tbc

The benefit of emuNAND
WAD installation happens on Computer therefore there is NONE TO LESS risk of Brick your Wii. If you wish to play Wiiware/VC games emuNAND is your solution. period.

Something I'm confused about playing GC games on Wii..

See, I modded my Wii like 2 years ago or something.. And haven't played around with softmods since. Back then, I'm almost certain that it was not possible to play GC roms on Wii if you had a specific type of Wii - and I had it. Does anyone even recognize what I'm talking about? I have the Black wii and something was '' different '' about it so that I wouldn't be able to play gc roms .. or something.

Is this not the case anymore? If I follow the instructions on the first page I would be able to play GC games?

And FYI, I can play GC games on my Wii if they're physical copies, it does have controller/memcard sockets etc.

Hello Stephaniie, I have a few questions. I started this modding from this guide yesterday, Initially I was confused at the Priiloader modifiing hacks as i had rececived the cant find hacks_ini. I understood that the file would be stored to the nand at install. When things didn't work for me for no reason what so ever, I started checking other guides trying to understand the issue. as i followed other guides to get this fixed i had loaded up another usb program to the channels beside usb loader GX to figure out the priiloader issue. so I figured out the Priiloader issues and applied the 7 system hacks as suggested. But....
Question
#1. Can I remove that other usb loader program with out fear of uninstalling something needed for GX? And how would that be done?
#2 In the process of figuring out priiloader i understood that the hack's ini would be installed to the nand but it was not and that was the issue (priiloader ran with out the hacks) so when i finally got it with the INI on the SD card, in the right spot, and accessed the system hacks it seems to have saved the changes. now next time i need to access that system hacks ( if ever, )will i need to reload the SD card? or would it now be saved to the nand?
#3 Im currently in the process of loading my wii games on to a usb drive from USB loader GX, as of Hightechman's video, yet i see that the Newer wii games will need FAT32 or ( exfat?) will this be an issue or will I have to start over to do that section, because I think it was NTFS before the format in the video? If that is so that should be worded better and warned before starting that Hightechman video, that you only want a portion of it.

q1: yes you can do that. Programs on Wii/Homebrew is never installed on nand, just stored files on your Sd card.

q2: you need to reload the sdcard. In other words, store the priiloader files on your Sd card to access It throught power+restore method.

q2: heh, may i say f*** . sorry, i just removed the text in usb loader install on hightechman videos THAT... you can skip part 10:30-12:00 ( when you install / use wbfs manager..) .and instead use WiiBackupManager .

wbfs manager has lots of flaws : you dont use fat32 or ntfs , disabling for using the hdd for others stuff then wii games.
WiiBackupManager however, rnables u to atore wii games on fat32 hdd, where you can also store gamecube, emulator games (n64, snes ect) as it works like any harddrive. ...

I gonna write that again in the guide, i removed the text as ithought it looked cleaner and ppl would get that hightechmans way of addin wii games is obsolete, but yea, i will add it again . :)

OK no problem, I did find that you can transfer WBFS files to ISO with wiibackup manager, so it was not completely a waste of time, here. https://gbatemp.net/threads/how-to-convert-wbfs-to-iso.350235/

Im just happy to be able to use the HDD for game storage soo Cool, because for some reason my Wii started rejecting factory made games that should have been playable.

Thankyou so far great guide.

OK so true story, I loaded up wiiflow (latest stable) and USB loader GX (updated) and installed my games. Also i installed a forwarder. once I had installed all my games back into the HDD Fat32 approved, I went to check out my wiiflow visual display. Well everything worked so i downloaded all the visual covers and like Magic everything worked..... EXCEPT for 2 games. One really worked to play but visually was screwed up and the other disappeared completely ( off the display .. OFF the Hard Drive). Lo-and Behold the one game my son wanted to play was one of them. USB Loader GX while I had installed both games, by inserting Disk and installed both by merging them together some how. So while only one Data file remained with data intact to play it, the ID of the disc was replaced by the other game, thus for all purposes ID'ing it as the other title. After scratching my head for awhile i said screw it i'll reinstall both so i deleted off the HDD whatever remained of Both installs. I had made a digital backup of each disc after that first install, and went to go install them. Well there i discovered that Both Separate game files had the same ID tags with different data properties, and when I selected both together to be installed only one would load ready to be installed. Im currently working to solve the Issue, but ROFL really? how would it have stolen ID tags from another game install and implanted them into a new install file? I Get all the fun errors :D

I'm revisiting this thread to say that I now have the softmod working. It's taken me a while to get back because of my move. Anyway, I tried redoing Step 5 like you said Stephanie, but no matter what I did (e.g. following your steps to the letter, messing with ISO settings, etc.) it wouldn't work, so I just formatted my Wii and started from scratch. From there, I redid the entire process, making sure to have that wad file (not sure how I missed it before) and everything works now. I've tried a few games with it and they seem to work fine. Nothing of importance was lost from the format, just some gamesaves that I didn't really care about.

Thanks for the help, Stephaniie,

Sorry i didnt wrote back eariler.
Yes, you have an issue i experciened with shared game id tags for 2 games,
One solution is to change the game id for one game.. you can do that in WiiBackupManager .

Im pretty sure, you rightclick the game in BackupManager and press change id.
I have done a similar thing for supermariobros wii, the hacked version -

So remove both games that cause issue. Add one game, look up the games id on google, then look if the GAME ID matches . If not, change it, then add the second game.

PS: if backupmanager does not work to change game id.. this is one handy tool i myself used

Hello stephaniie. I have begun SoftModding my Wii and have used your guide to do it. So far, so good!

I know that you prefer to use emuNAND to run VC / Wii Ware games, but I would prefer to run VC / WiiWare titles directly off an SD card. I have used the WAD Manager 1.7 to install them to the Wii itself without problems. However, if I move the game to my SD card, many (but not all) will no longer work. They will say "Failed to Launch." If I try to move the game back to the Wii itself, it will no longer work. I have followed Stephaniie's steps precisely, and have also installed IOS80 which was said to correct this issue. I also have ensured my SD card is properly formatted and have tried several different SD cards. Has anyone had this problem before?

However, Stephaniie, I might warm up to the idea of using emuNAND if it can do something that might otherwise be tricky. You mention that using emuNAND is safer because it will not risk bricking your Wii. Do you know if emuNAND will safely play custom VC titles? I have read that playing them by installing them to Wii directly is very risky.

Thanks again for your guide!

Well, you can also consider emunand a safety method. If you can install the VC/ Wiiware into ShowMiIWads, then with 99% assurety you can install it from a Wad Manager.

In my case, most VC games works in Emunand but I cant use codes. Havent tried the Gecko trick yet thought. So I play most VC throught snes/nes emulators. Also some Wiiware isnt working on emunand so I install them to Wii Menu. athe issue lies when you want many wiiware at same time, My Wii can install 3 wiiware after that its storage capacity is full.

I do recommend also lookn into Neeko/ virtual nand. It said have better compbability then emunand in usb loader gx .. And isnt hard to try out.

hey im having major trouble getting my wii to play GC games.

So ive been working on modding this Wii for about 2 months now lol, and i finally broke down and had to ask for help. ive tried everything, ive followed all the old threads here and tried what people have suggested but im still stuck. everything is working great expect for dios mios. I am using WiiFlow, dio mios lite, my wii games are on a USB drive and they work fine but my GC games are on the SD card. i load the GC iso and get a fatal error with out a disc in or app_entyry is not within the app loader with a dvd in. (unfortunately the games im trying to play are unplayable due to damage) same thing happens even when i go into that games setting and change it no disc mode. now, i am a total newb and really have lost my way with computers since my younger year. i now currently only own an iMac so it very hard to find the right programs to complete these tasks. can anyone help me?!

Asdertman, I think you'll have to find a replacement! I recommend a standard Wii Remote (one that does not say "Wii Motion Plus Inside" on the bottom). I did not have trouble at the same place you did (I had a GameCube controller handy), but when I tried to use the WAD Manager, the older Wii remote was the ONLY thing that worked. If my experience is representative of the typical process.

Stephaniie, I'll look into that as soon as a I get a HDD. Thanks again!

It looks like I have run into a snag around step 5, because the download link in the video is not working.

I downloaded DMLizard elsewhere, but it is does not come with IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad or WiiMod. I downloaded WiiMod 3.2 and added it to the apps folder myself (works fine), but is there a particular reason that IOS249 is not in the WAD folder? I'm having trouble tracking it down separately.

Edit: Nevermind, I found it under a different package

I seem to be having a similar issue... When using DMLizard, I'm not getting the IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad or WiiMod files. Are these suppose to be obtained elsewhere?
