and how many of those games were missing features, released on other platforms first, or weren't well reviewed?
I am done using petty excuses for the Wii U - all of this is a result of the system not being profitable to develop for and as such not worth the effort. The Wii U has a 6+ million strong install base, the fact that games can't break even on it is a travesty.

It's hardly petty when unpopular games sell poorly, inferior ports sell poorly, or people who already own the game on another console that it had previously come out on don't buy it again. This happens game after game and the developers go out and complain that their games don't sell. I have seen little effort on the part of these developers to put out a product worth buying on the platform.

I'm going to play the role of a clairvoyant skeptic and say that Nintendo will dedicate a Direct for the game, they will try to promote it, perhaps announce a bundle (which would help tremendously) and the game will sell modestly, between 500K and 1.5m copies, I think that's a fair prediction.

Whoa. A lot of naysayers here. You guys invested in failure or something

Well they bought a Wii U, so yeah.

The multiplatform argument is simply valid. You don't buy a Wii U to play these games. Target audience for those is on other platforms. Personally, I wouldn't have bothered with porting them. You want to play just the third Mass Effect or latest AC games on the Wii U? You can, but most would not want to. People interested in those games bought other platforms with good enough sales to guarantee sequels.

If some of the most popular franchises don't sell well on the Wii U, niche ones won't. Call of Duty was one of the only mildly successful third parties on the Wii, some of them even broke a million sales. If those can't sell on the Wii U, Bayonetta can't. Stop being delusional and say "Well you don't buy a Wii U for those games." You're pushing goalposts.

EDIT: Can't wait for the game to sell like shit and then everyone to go "W-well those were its target sales! It wasn't meant to sell a lot!" Then they'll praise how well the game did for a Wii U game or praise Nintendo for bringing us such a great game while being the noble money martyrs who took a loss just to bring us the endearing cultural landmark that is Bayonetta.

Stop being delusional and say "Well you don't buy a Wii U for those games."

But that's the whole damn point. People DON'T buy Nintendo consoles to play these games. You didn't buy a GameCube hoping you'd get Grand Theft Auto, and you didn't buy a Wii to play whatever Call of Duty or Splinter Cell it got. Since the dawn of time, best selling software on Nintendo's consoles has been Nintendo's own. There's a reason why Nintendo projects this cutesy, family friendly image, and it clashes with games like Call of Duty. It's not their thing, and those games aren't what the bigger part of Wii U owners want. But that's just too much to digest, I guess, since we're having this conversation in a Bayonetta 2 thread. Because low sales figures and Nintendo's mistakes are just too much fun to not talk endlessly about.

Can't wait for the game to sell like shit

That's the spirit, Mr. PSN - XBL - Steam ID signature. Where's your NNID? We're all aware that Wii U isn't doing too well, but do we really need to obsess about it and point it out every chance we get? I mean, this is exactly what bothers me. You have people bitching and moaning, spewing sales figures left and right, and it's an infection that is clearly spreading. You visit Polygon's website and this is the type of crap you get. Instead of stories about games themselves, you get stories about how poorly Mario Kart 8 is selling. Enough already.

Then they'll praise Nintendo for bringing us such a great game while being the noble money martyrs who took a loss just to bring us the endearing cultural landmark that is Bayonetta.

You obviously don't care about the franchise, so what are you here for, anyway? Besides being a downer like most of the harsh realists here, who forgot how fun it was to play games instead of being a self-made market analyst. Give me a break. And yes, even if Bayonetta 2 sells poorly, I will praise Nintendo for paying up, because that's exactly what they did, and without them we wouldn't have a sequel. I liked the first game, even though it did feel like a Tecmo production, with a whole lot of ass in face moments (girls can dig it too), and by the look of it, Bayonetta 2 will bring it hard.

Lastly, I'm done with sales figures and speculations, and I'm most definitely done with anyone with internet access trying to preach market dynamics with their third grade math. Over and out.

I bought a Gamecube for overall game support, as an owner of a GBC, GBA and a Famiclone I expected it since Nintendo's previous systems had superb third-party support (except the N64 and Virtual Boy). It was also superior specs-wise to the PS2, so that was a big pro. I don't see why you wouldn't expect third-party on it when the system had fantastic hardware for its time.

I take it that you have to taste a tire instead of just smelling it to know that it tastes foul?

Maybe he's here to discuss things and provide his opinion. This is an internet forum, its very purpose is to provide a place where users can exchange opinions, it's not designed to be a hugbox.

Okay, let's return to the thread a few months from now when Bayonetta 2 joins the long list of good yet underperforming games on the Wii U.

Will it flop? Perhaps, perhaps not. I don't know how large prints Nintendo does on their games, but I expect Bayonetta 2 to become a title sold as "Wii U Classic" at some point. The first game on the PS3/360 was not bad per se, but the execution of the game was horrible. If it was released now, the end result would be quite a bit better as shown by the software development of now compared to the beginning of the generation.

As for Bayonetta in general? I'd say it's not my GOTY by any means, but that is just due to me not liking the original. I will probably end up buying the game at some point just as I have bought most if not all interesting games on the latest platforms. If it goes along the route of ZombiU, I'll be able to buy the game for 5 euros in about a year after launch.

The execution of the game..? What exactly does that mean?
It means he got the PS3 version :tpi:

Well I played the 360 version of the original, after the 10/10 off EDGE and all the other praise heaped onto it.... thought it was grossly overrated too frankly. So this Wii U owner hasn't really been interested in B2 from the outset: only time will tell what the other 5 Wii U users will think about it.....
No in all seriousness, I'll probably get round to getting it eventually, but it's bargain bin material if you ask me, and like has been said I suspect I'll be finding it in one of those a little too soon for Nintendo's liking. Don't think it'll do half as badly as ZombiU (or Wonderful 101), but still no way is it gonna sell by the millions.

I'm just glad that the series gets a sequel in the end - for WiiU, PS4 or Xbox, I dont care.

Would've bought any console for this. *bitch dance*

Still waiting for the First Print Edition in germany. Somebody knows how europe splits the 15.300?

Maybe Nintendo gave each one an exact number of orders they were allowed to take and then once they've hit. That's it.

I think it'll do fine. Perhaps not Mario-kind of sales figures, but certainly better than most half-assed ports (and I'm afraid I'm going to have to put watch_dogs in this category as well). My guess would be around 900k - 1.1 million sales. The reason? This game was announced together with the wiiu itself, so people sort of know about it. And with an updated original being included, it CERTAINLY will sell more than the original (fans of that had probably already preordered it from before that announcement).

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
