Welcome to Europe, 3DS'es have been distributed without AC adapters here ever since the pricecut. Rip-off country, but what can you do? ;)
Doesn't this new 3DS get distributed without a charger everywhere? At least I can't remember reading about it coming with a charger for the US, and the Japanese features page also mentions there's no charger included.

The 3DS XL was already supposed to be distributed without a charger in all territories, but due to strong protests North American users got a bundle with the adapter. This might change this time around, and it's still rip-off country. I don't know of a single device with a rechargeable battery and a proprietary charger port that doesn't come with an AC adapter aside from the 3DS - it's ridiculous.

I think the shoulder buttons on the 3DS XL are the best we've had since the original GBA, personally.

I mean how all the handhelds since the ds lite have had shoulder buttons that seem to stop working which brought back the old chore of blowing our systems to get them working properly.

The only handheld I've had shoulder button issues with are the gb micro and my original 3DS. The latter was fixed for free under warranty. But maybe I'm just lucky.

The charger thing doesn't bother me in the slightest since I already have 2 of the damn things, but I understand where people are coming from
I have two chargers myself, but that's indeed not the point. A device should be fully functional out of the box and shouldn't require the user to purchase additional accessories just to make use of it. Many users trade in or sell their old consoles when upgrading, so they can't really use their original charger. That, and completely new customers who don't have any Nintendo chargers at all are immediately discouraged by having to invest in extra accessories to even turn the console on. Now, if the system was charged via miniUSB or some other commonly used charger standard, sure. It's not though - the charger is proprietary and should be included. All of this is just smoke and mirrors set up to sell the console at the lowest price possible just to "look good" when in fact you're going to need to buy the charger anyways if you don't have one.

Honestly, I don't have a problem with chargers, since I always owned Nintendo handhelds I have my fair share of chargers compatible with 3DS,
but I can't agree with this, if the charger used a port like Micro-USB/Mini-USB It wouldn't be that much of a trouble since these cables are pretty common in
modern eletronics and could also be charged on a PC as well.
Having a proprietary charger sold separetely to cut the price is, in a certain way, screwing the customer that is buying the console for the first time,
people will have a image of product been cheap but are actually getting something incomplete and will need to spend a few bucks more for something vital for the console function.

However, it would also give people chargers that they don't need. I do hope for usb charging for the next handheld.
I get you're probably playing devil's advocate, but that's still a sleazy way to lower the price. People that aren't paying much attention to that part could easily end up with a handheld they can't charge and won't notice until they open up the box. I know it's not a big deal, but it bugs me to see anti-consumer choices being justified.

If they want the handheld to look good by having a lower price, then they should take the loss and just sell it at a lower price, they should not sell it as an incomplete product. As far as I'm concerned, unless it's clearly marked boldly on the front of the box, they shouldn't be allowed to sell a product that's advertised as a standalone system without everything that's needed to operate it, especially since it was the norm and to be expected to get everything that's needed with the purchase.

As far as I'm concerned, business are there to make money, but they should do it by making consumer friendly choices, not by seeing what they can get away with.

blowing into your systems though, has always made this worse, as you blow in dirt, grease and humidity, clogging up the contacts even faster.
breaking L/R buttons in the first place seem to be caused by people pressing down on them too hard most of the time anyways. my brothers, who're both notorious anger players have broken those things on more than 15 consoles and controllers, from snes to gba to ps3. mine are all 100% functional (and my stuff is older too). same thing with most of my friends from the old days, who were like that. the calm players never had to rebuy snes controllers.
the only button i ever broke was dpad-left on an old gba, after I played street fighter alpha 3 for a week or two. that dpad wasn't built for half-circle inputs, as it inevitably destroys the contact rubber under the dpad.

I cant even begin to imagine what the thought process behind not including a charger was.

the official story has always been: since the dsi, we use the same charger, most of our buyers already have one. why make them pay for one more they dont need?
and with recent studies showing that 2/5th of our global electronics waste is composed entirely of old dumb rechargers (well ok, not quite that much, but its still tons of waste), i feel like its not the worst idea. fuck people who can't read the bright yellow label on the 3ds box. must hurt so bad to wait another day to buy or get a cable delivered.

Does this mean European users didn't protest strongly enough?

"Let's give them less stuff for the same amount of money. Profit!"

The problem with this is that they're basically admitting that they're purposely reselling this to people that already own a 3DS, which makes it look even more like an "easy money" deal than it already does.

Plus with GameStop requiring you to include the charger when you trade in a handheld, it doesn't really hold water to say "well people already have chargers, so they don't need one here."

And not everyone wants just one charger. For example, I have all my handheld chargers tied together and fastened to my nightstand so that I don't have to deal with ratty, tangled cords every time I want to charge something, plus I have a second charger for each for traveling, etc..

lol, when the 3DS was first anounced i said i would wait for the 3DSi XL version before i buy it :P

Looks like the naming was wrong but i was so right predicting it. They went XL before going better hardware which is the opposite of the DSi and DSi XL evolution but end result is the same.

If i have learned one thing from nintendo fromm the many GB, GBC, GBA, DS its that you always wait for at least the 3rd hardware revision before you jump in :P

I wonder why the title mentions lighter,
the new XL is lighter but just by little and the new smaller version is heavier than the old one.
Also, I always new console as a non-portable videogame, the portable ones were then called handhelds.
Wouldn't it be better if it was new improved 3DS announced, or 3DS new model announced.

No, it means NoA chickened out while NoJ and NoE stood their ground. Maybe it's because 'murrica is lawsuit-happy and they wanted to avoided getting engulfed in one? Who knows.

So your saying that Nintendo America chickened out because they offered a charger with device that requires a special charger? I would love to see people's reaction if apple would decided to start making the iphone 5 with a new charger but sell the phone without it. Hint. Everyone would freak out

What I meant was that all 3DS'es were supposed to ship charger-less (which is stupid, see earlier posts), but NoA was the only division to break under the pressure of criticism.
