Not sure if this is the best subforum for this or not, but if anyone would know, it would be people here on gbatemp.

A couple weeks ago, I came across a huge buy-it-now on eBay for 5 Pokémon distribution cartridges... but the interesting thing is that they came with boxes. The guy actually had 6 boxes total, but only 5 carts.

I offered to buy just the boxes, as I already have the distribution carts which I had bought from previous auctions. He said someone had already offered $250 for just the boxes so I offered $275, which he took.

Well upon closer look, I'm pretty convinced that they're fake. For one thing, the cartridge ID on the bottom right of the box is for Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, not any of the NFR carts. Despite the barcode area having "NOT FOR RESALE", it also says "for sale, rental, and use only in USA [...]", which also makes no sense. Same with having the customer support number on there... I highly doubt you can just call that number and get help with distribution carts!

I've uploaded the 8 photos that were on eBay here:

Specifically, you can see what I'm referring to in picture 5:

At the very bottom left and right you can see what looks like NTR P BKIE USA... NTR-BKIE-USA is Spirit Tracks. I didn't think anything of it when making the offer as his photos make them look like real DS boxes, but upon actually having them in my hand, they feel like someone just printed them on laminated card-stock and stuck them in a DS case (which can be obtained anywhere...)

I am curious what people think of this. I don't want to call them fakes right away on the off chance it was just stupidity on Nintendo's part (since after all, the public wasn't even supposed to know about these distribution carts)

I know we have people on gbatemp who work(ed) at GameStop. Does anyone happen to remember their store receiving the distro carts in the mail? I'd love to know if they had cases or were just the cart.

No, they don't come with boxes. Custom made probably to get more cash.

Yes, this is correct. There are no boxes for distribution carts.

Also, a question, were these carts made just to transfer the data from the cart to the ds in store? Because, I google'd a few and on the cart it said "RETURN TO NINTENDO." So if this is the case how did the person selling it on eBay even get it?

Most likely in the destruction process after the event ended some of them ended up pocketed and sold on the market.

Or whoever worked at GameStop pocketed it and never returned it. Then if Nintendo calls their store saying they never got it, they could just say "oh, we mailed it back, it must have gotten lost"
Since hey, that does happen.

I've heard about people who had parents working at Toys R Us, back when TRU did the gen 3 distributions (Mew comes to mind)... and the guy said his mom just brought it home for him one day.

Most of the time, these arent supposed to leave the stores. Sometimes they have special nintendo employees come in and do all the demo game switching for the store.

Yeah, it was confirmed from another forum that the cases are indeed fake. Someone made the template and was giving out the .PSD to anyone who wanted it.

Someone apparently printed them up and was selling them. I got my money back, but I guess this thread could serve as a warning to anyone else who sees these that they're fanmade and not at all official.

just did some random searching and chanced upon this thread. I remember a few years back when black and HG/SS were fairly new and I was playing it on DS where I think I saw someone post ROMs of the distro carts you've mentioned (I think the shiny dogs and the deoxys were some of them). would you by any chance know if they are still there? wanted to get legitimate copies of these pokemon and transfer it over to X and Y
