Hey guys,

I'm having trouble. My cousin left 2 xbox 360's and a bunch of games to me when he got a xbox one. I'm really good with computers and electronics but I haven't got into the 360 scene any. My problem is one of the xboxes he said didn't work and when I turned it on it booted right up. When I put in a game the menu said press w/e button to play game and when I do it goes to a black screen and right back to the menu. When I press disk or game information it starts to change screens but doesn't. I opened the xbox up to clean the DVD drive out and realized some one had already opened the xbox up before. Now I'm wondering if this thing had a faulty drive and some one replaced with another xbox drive not knowing about the secret code thing.

Is their a way to tell if the code on this drive matches the xbox?
Is their a way around this? Flashing or modding?
Can I use a PC DVD drive?

Thanks,
Levi

P.S, I dont care about playing on live and I dont care about playing burnt games, just want to play the games I already own

You can't use a PC drive unfortunately.

What you can do (and what I advice you to do) is to RGH it.
What's the MFR date of your 360? (it's on the back on the sticker)

I believe its a jasper from the power cord. date says 2009/09/03

I'm not sure if the DVD drive even works or if the passcodes match, will this matter?

Well there's a possibility the DVD keys don't match.
You'll have to extract them via RGH then.

What you can do is get a new Liteon drive from ebay and transplant the PCB onto the new liteon drive.
If that doesn't fix the problem then you'll have to RGH it to extract the DVD keys.
Whilst you're at RGHing, you might as wel keep it on to enjoy the wonders of it.

Games on the HDD, XBLA backups, old Xbox games, homebrew games etc.
As well as a few emulators.

It sounds like the problem I had with my 360's drive. One day it just quit stopped reading (and I barely use it). I flashed iXtreme fw back on it and still it was a no go.

Did the graphic for the game show up or just stay the same? If it didn't then I'm betting the laser died (like I'm sure mine did).

You can still extract the key from it and get a replacement drive (I recommend a Benq) and/or RGH if the dashboard isn't too high.

The graphic for the game does not show up. If it's just a dead lazer I'm surious why some one had opened the xbox up. So if the lazer is bad I need to replace the drive even if I RGH right? THe RGH is a chip right?

Pretty much all Jaspers came with a Liteon drive.
Only thing you'll need to do is get a Liteon drive off off ebay and transplant the old PCB to the new drive.
That's the cheap and easy way.

RGH has to be done with a glitch chip and a coolrunner chip.
Coolrunner 4 is announced and will be the best one in the range.
Least amount of wires are needed to be soldered as well ;]

XBLA backups are Arcade games grabbed off off the web.

A dead laser is easily replaceable and usually costs no more than ~$9 USD on eBay. Keep in mind you will need a soldering iron to remove a small dot of solder on the new laser.

IIRC if you have a DVD drive with mismatched keys a game disk will prompt "Play DVD" instead of showing the game info.

With RGH you can play games (ISO converted to GOD) by transferring them by FTP or flash drive so you don't need it unless you want to play legit games or don't have the means to back them up.
