Personally, I wish they had never teamed up with Enix, they were much better off staying as Squaresoft. Now that they became SquareEnix, I doubt I'll ever see a Chrono Cross remake/sequel any time, ever. :/

It's Square Enix, they're more likely to release a crappy mobile port of FF7 before that happens ;)
Heck, they'll probably re-release FF7 on the Playstation before they give an HD remake to a game that actually needs it. Now, I'm not even talking about gameplay-wise. X and X-2 look fine, there's no need to give such a minimal leap in graphics.

Which is ironic, since both Squaresoft and Enix made awesome games. So... awesome + awesome = not awesome. Japanese math is hard.

Same, both made good games when they were not one company, but when they merged, the quality seemed to have suffered degradation.

Nobody... they did just fine on their own. The merger wasn't needed.

Square probably wouldn't have made it past 2003 if they didn't merge with Enix. They were having pretty big financial issues before then, and while Sony helped out a bit by buying a bunch of stock, they still weren't doing all that great. The merge happened because both Enix and Square wanted to combine their development costs so they could survive another few years, which they did. Not to mention the fact that when they did merge, Square made up like 80% of Square Enix. If you want to blame anyone for lack of Square series, you can blame Square.
