I will assume the answer is none, but what are my options for doing anything (homebrew etc.) with a CECHH03 on 4.50 OFW without buying anything or soldering anything?
None. You have to spend some money, whether it is hardware downgrade or ODE.

For homebrew development, you are better off doing hardware downgrade and install CFW. Homebrew on ODE is very limited, as you don't have any custom syscall.

What about this claim

Code:
Is my PS3 hackable?

Yes, as of today(01-2014) all PS3 are hackable.

from this thread - http://gbatemp.net/threads/my-2014-ps3-hacking-guide-faq.361323/

Are all PS3's now hackable?

According to his definition of "hacked", yes, because he includes ODEs (even though it's not technically a "hack"). All PS3s can use ODEs just fine (well, not anymore. Sony released a new update for the PS3 that goes after ODEs, so until the more popular ODE teams update their shit people need to lay off). Otherwise, no PS3 firmware after 3.55 has been cracked yet, meaning you have to either have a PS3 that can downgrade to 3.55 or you have to use an ODE.

Ahhhh got ya...

So by hacked people are referring to a software modification (a la Wii)

But you can do a hardware install to enable using backups etc.

You have 2 choices. You can find a PS3 that has had 3.55 or lower and downgrade it (here's a list of the various SKU models, at the very right of the chart are the lowest firmware each PS3 can use. Anything 3.55 and below will be the model you're looking for) In this case, I would recommend one of the slim PS3s just to avoid any YLOD issues. In order to downgrade, you'll need to grab some hardware or you'll need to ship it out to someone who will do it for you which is generally cheaper.

Your second option is the ODE way, this is a bit more expensive and because the new 4.60FW was launched to help detect and block ODEs, at this current point in time you wouldn't be able to use it officially online. http://www.team-cobra-ode.com/

Thanks for the reply.

I checked out my PS3 and here is what I found out:
CECH-2503B
DATE CODE 0C (July, August, September / 2010 according to SKU wiki)

So I believe the lowest possible firmware is 3.40 or 3.50.

Could you please clarify if I have things right?

I can have this PS3 downgraded to a firmware below 3.55 therefore it will be possible for me to hack the system which in turn will enable me to play back-ups?

Or will I need to do any hardware adjustments?

(All I want to do is play back-ups, no fancy stuff)

Yep, your console is indeed downgradeable to 3.55. In order to do so, you'll either need a hardware flasher (like the E3 flasher), or you can just ship it off to someone who offers the service (PS3hax has a nice list of people in the UK who do it: http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=53127). Generally, shipping it tends to be on the cheaper end.

Once it's on a hackable firmware, just follow this tutorial: http://www.ps3hax.net/showthread.php?t=64846 And install the latest CFW, which will in turn let you play your downloadable games. Though a warning, you must be very careful when playing online with these as your console could get banned.

If you're ok with not being on the latest firmware/waiting for an update for the ODEs, then buying one of the ODEs would end up being a better option for you since all it does is play downloaded games, whereas CFW offers a whole range of features which you might not use. It's up to you, though.
