Shin Megami Tensei IV vs SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked vs SMT: Devil Summoner Soul Hacker?

I know all they are totally different games.
However, what should I play first? Any recommendation for playing order (I know I will eventually play all of them since I love Atlus games)?

Also, what do you like/dislike about each of these games?

Unless you have a time machine, you mean Shin Megami Tensei IV. They're completely different genres, from completely different worlds. First is a standard turn-based RPG, next is a turn-based RPG/tactics hybrid, and third is a turn-based dungeon crawler (not that different from the first one). You can play any of the games in any order and not miss anything. I personally would play them in the order you listed them, because that's the descending order of fun I had with them. That's just my opinion, though. Don't forget the Persona games~

Thank you for your opinion!
I know I love all three genres. I loved Persona 3&4, Etrian Odyssey, and Fire Emblem/Super Robot Taisen (and definitely Final Fantasy). I just can't decide what to play first!

Honestly, if I were to approach it logically, I'd go the reverse order. Soul Hackers, then Devil Survivor, then SMTIV. Soul Hackers is a remake of a super old game, so even after being made for the 3DS, it still feels very dated, compared to the new entries of SMTIV and Devil Survivor. If you play the others before you play Soul Hackers, you'll go "What is this crap?" Well, at least I did, which is why I never actually got more than a few hours into Soul Hackers.

^^^ This

As much as Ive tried to get into Soul Hackers, it just feels sooooo old. Combat feels clunky and has a weird pace to it, you have to pay a pretty substantial chunk of money to heal your team, half of the games mechanics are never explained, demons do not level up(if I remember correctly), you have to have a certain resource to even have demons out, and my biggest gripe of all is you can't use the goddamn circle pad to move around because it's used to adjust your map in dungeons.

That being said it does look fairly decent, the voice acting is pretty good and having 2 characters you get to allocate stats to are all nice touches. I couldve probably suffered through it if I didn't play SMT4 first.

I have no opinion about Soul Hackers, but i suggest at least playing Devil Survivor before IV because of how good IV feels. Polished and with tons more demons than DS.

SMTIV is absolutely kicking my ass. In the first fucking dungeon. I've actually been put off from playing it atm, but I'll definitely try it again.

Persona 4 was baby stuff compared to this.

You can always change your difficulty setting in the menu.
I kind of like Persona series better, because I like those school-play :)

The entire game is designed to kick your ass, from beginning to end, until you start figuring out what demons are weak to what(fortunately the game will remember weaknesses you discover for you) . Its entirely possible for a level 50+ party to get wiped by a group of level 20 demons if you just spam commands all willy-nilly. As with most SMT games, the difficulty goes down pretty substantially if you spec your MC into a pure magic build as well. If you want a physical damage build for some reason use a pure gun build instead as strength is arguably the worst stat in the game. And most importantly: FUSE FUSE FUSE! Constantly fuse new demons as once they gain a couple levels their experience gain lowers significantly. You should have a new team of demons every 2-4 levels.

What I normally do is grind a bit in each new area/dungeon first, get new demons through fusions, etc. before continuing. Like the dude above me said, the game gets quite easy if you take advantage of enemy weaknesses. I like having one physical demon, one damage spell demon, and one demon that has both healing and damage spells. Of course, once you get further into the game, you're able to get more skill slots, which means they can branch out more.

Wow, I never knew it was still unreleased over there. May I suggest getting Gateway, then? You won't be disappointed~

I think it's been almost a year since it got released in the US, right? Atlus sure likes their EU customers..

I thought about getting one, but I like supporting the 3DS (and it would also mean that I had to get another 3DS with 4.5, which I'm sadly unable to afford)

One of the main reasons I got a Gateway a few weeks ago. I was waiting for SMTIV to release before getting a 3DS, so I just thought FUCK IT after 2.1 Gateway was released and got my 3DS XL days after.

However as I mentioned above I found the game quite difficult lol.

Yeah, it was released in June, I believe.

You can still support the 3DS and have a Gateway, you know. I mean, I don't, since I haven't bought a game since Dual Destinies, but it's entirely possible.

Grab a Gateway if you don't have one yet, and play the U.S. version before they release in EU. You can always buy one when they release in EU! :)
