It would actually be interesting to see what would happen if the Wii U actually fails and the system + its games have to go out of production permanently.
Unlike SEGA, Nintendo has the money to keep the system on life support. History shows that unless the system is an absolute disaster (Virtual Boy), they'll keep it alive artificially just to save face (Nintendo 64, Gamecube). That said, it's still a bad trend and here's for hoping that the story doesn't repeat itself.
