I picked up a Vita (PCH-1101) a couple months ago on craigslist mostly because it was a good deal - 3g/wifi version, brand new, for $100. I had read a bit about the Vita hardware, which sounds really nice, and figured for the price it'd be nice to have one one hand if/when new Vita-only games come out that I'd like to play, and of course I'd love to be able to hack it if/when that ever becomes a possibility.

Unfortunately, I failed to do my research on how the software side of things work, and I'm not at all satisfied with that. I'll spare you the details, but the short version is that CMA, forced phoning home, proprietary (and stupidly expensive) memory cards, amongs other things, just really rub me the wrong way, to the point that I'm just not interested in even using it as-is.

So, I have an almost brand new Vita PCH-1101 that I messed with for about 2 hours and put back in its original box, with the original firmware on it as I didn't want to upgrade it just yet (I'm not sure of the exact version, but it's earlier than 2.0). What should I do with it?

The leading two options in my mind are:

1. Leave it in the box and just wait/hope for a native exploit to come out to make the thing far more useful. I'd *love* to be able to use this like I do my PSP, with all of my games ripped to ISO and copied over to the memory stick for quick and easy access. I figure leaving it on the old firmware version would improve my chances of being able to hack it if that day ever comes.

2. Sell it. I'm reasonably certain I can sell it for a profit and make a little money off it. Of course, if I go that route and then the Vita does become hackable at some point, I'll need to hunt down a suitable one for hacking that's still in good condition, which may not be any cheaper than what I've already paid.

I'm kind of leaning toward the former at this point - I don't really need that $100 at the moment, so if I can consider than an early investment that will pay off later in the form of a hacked Vita then I'll consider it money well spent. Of course, if it doesn't look like that's likely to happen pretty much ever, then it'd just be a waste.

So, I'm interested in what the GBAtemp community things. Is it worth holding onto as-is, or am I just wasting my time and money waiting and hoping for a native hack? or are there any other suggestions I can consider?

Thanks. :-)

Honestly? Grab a PSPlus subscription and go legit. There are no hacks on the horizon, by the time we see full-blown custom firmware, the systems will be dirt cheap. Technically there's eCFW for PSP ISO's, but you already have a PSP, so there's no point in going that route when with Plus you can just get PSVita games. It doesn't cost a whole lot and you'll swim in PSVita games.

I appreciate the quick feedback, but I think you misinterpreted one important point - I'm not looking to hack my Vita so I can steal games. I'm looking to hack it to make it more useful and convenient. If/when a Vita game come out that I'm genuinely interested in and want to play, of course I'm going to buy it, just as I've done with all of my PSP games (and, likewise, the DS games I play on my hacked DS, the Wii games I play on my hacked Wii, etc.)

With that said, though, I won't buy most digital games, at least not on consoles. I have strong issues with DRM and any technology that prevents me from truly owning to products I buy, so unless a game is digitally released in a completely DRM-free format (which, sadly, is mostly limited to PC indie games) I'll either buy the physical copy or, if no such physical cope exists, I just won't buy the game. From what I've read PSN Plus sounds like a great deal for the free game(s) you get each month, but I'm just not interested in having DRM'ed games, even the games included with a PSN Plus subscription.

Yeah, I know most people consider this a weird position to take, but it's something I feel strongly about. So with PSN games off the table... save and hope, or sell? or again, is there another alternative I haven't considered?

If you're rejecting PSN games in general, you're rejecting a huge portion of the overall library - certain releases are Digital-Only. That, and your "Digital Rights" are always "Managed" - all games come with a license, it's as simple as that. I treat Plus games as rentals - I have access to them as long as I subscribe and I'm okay with that. It's a great way to build a library of games to play on the cheap.

foxi4, again, I appreciate your reply, but you're getting derailed from the topic at hand. I'm not looking to debate DRM. I'll readily acknowledge that PSN Plus offers a good value for people that don't mind not actually owning their games, but I'm not one of those people. I'm just wondering if anyone has any advice about what to do with my Vita. As I've mentioned above, buying DRM'ed games for it is not something I'm going to do.

He's pointing out that you're limiting your options with an outdated look at the big picture. You've never truly owned any of your games, just the medium it was on.

Plus, when you buy a vita game, you can only use it on a vita. Basically, it's hardware DRM. I'll agree with WiiUBricker. You're doing the console no great service by keeping it. I'd either sell it, or cave and do something with it. Those are your only two real options beyond keeping it in hopes the model you have will accrue in price (because if I'm not mistaken, that model has the OLED screen). There's no real advice to give if you're limiting yourself like this...

I have absolutely no intention of derailing the thread - if you feel like you need to "own" the games you buy, by all means, buy retail boxed copies or full digital releases - the only DRM you'll encounter in PSN releases is that they are encrypted for your PSVita/PSN account. You can back them up on as many storage devices as you'd like (on PC, PS3 and PS4) and they will never "perish" like PSPlus games do when your subscription ends. I only pointed out that Plus might be a good deal to consider despite your inhibitions because subscribing rakes in a lot of those "rentals" really quickly - you can still purchase the games you'd like to "own" in your traditional understanding of the word.

i'm on the exact same boat as you as i mistakenly bought this console without knowing how much of a hassle was to just update and use open cma and because of that i've also a little bit fed up with this.
my choice is to store it,even if i have to wait year 2020 for an hack i'll store it,but i do consider selling it if there is a chance to cash a good deal
but in my case i would not sell it for less than 250€ (vita wifi+32gb memory+travel kit)
so i suggest the same thing to you:keep it but if you happen upon a good deal sell it.
about when the hack comes out it's not so difficult to look for an old console (if your quick enough) so i would not trouble myself with that

I was just like you a few months back, where I was unsure about keeping my Vita or selling it. Its really worth it to keep it as I found that PS Plus, Remote Play, and generally the games for the system are very well made. The apps are alright too, if you can believe it for a handheld. Its a very powerful system with a lot of games to offer. It doesn't have a huge library of games, but what it does have is pretty high quality games. If you want to sell it, only do so for a reasonable profit($50+ from original)
